Short answer is yes, IMO..

Bernie torpedoed FOTA by giving nice deals to Ferrari and Red Bull, then the other teams were left with little choice to scrape whatever they could for themselves.

Divide and conquer, works every single time.

Leave it to Ferrari to screw over F1 time and time again.

If true, this will be HUGE pressure on Mercedes to perform. Huge pressure.
I truly hope they now have everything in place to make that step up next year.

Well, it looks like us Merc fans are going to get an exodus of the fans and detractors of one hugely popular & controversial driver and an influx of the fans of another similar driver.

So, atleast on the Autosport BB, things wont change for us :D

Hamilton - Mercedes deal is much more than only money. They will build new structure around Lewis.

f1talks.pl ‏@f1talks
Expect some big names and two new sponsors. Big deal, real deal...

Oh wow they didn't build a new structure around NR and MSC but will around LH... splendid! So for another year or so Merc can keep repeating that they are still building the team...

There are plenty. They´ve just been much more reserved compared to the overbearing MS fans.

Coca Cola joining Mercedes.

Good news all around.

One of F1's most talented drivers' joins team followed by a massive sponsor, a team of big name engineers has already been assembled, and the 2014 regulations could potentially fall right into Mercedes' comfort zone.

Hello. I am a new Mercedes team fan.

I used to see Ross Brawn in the WHSmith in Henley-on-Thames, and waiting in his Merc estate for his wife while shopping. I even saw him at a fete. So I feel close to the team ;).

Let the civil war begin...

Anyway, very much in two minds about this.

Let's start with the bad side:
- I like MS, enjoyed supporting him (unlike first career)
- I am concerned that behind the scenes he contributed a lot and that wisdom will be missed
- I don't think it's good that the team focus on LH and neglect NR, they should be equal
- LH sometimes has a tendency to not think before he speaks

The good:
- Very fast driver, no doubting that
- Sponsorships
- Some engineers may follow him to Merc
- An indication that Merc is serious about F1 and intending to stay

As a fanatical fan of the TEAM, I honestly don't know if I should be happy or sad. :|

I think that is the most important point, so I guess we should be happy (although I'd strongly dislike a fixed 2nd driver role as well).

Must be a bitter sweet news to Merc fans. But congrats anyways. The Merc board will surely be impressed and maybe commit longer to F1 with better funding.

As far as I'm concerned now, Merc doesn't exist. I was already not bothering getting up for Suzuka because of the 10 place drop but now.. I hope Merc and Ross Brawn rot in hell. Backstabbers they are

Agreed. No doubt we'll see 6 dismal performances from Schumacher until the end of the season. Merc can't afford for him to continue looking strong now can they?

I don't think the 2014 regulations are really going to shake up the field that much. The changes are definitely not as big as for 2009.

Aldo Costa and the rest of the guys will need to produce a good car for next season.

You don't think that having, hypothetically, a much superior engine won't shake the field up relative to those without that engine?

What?

The changes are huge. Even Newey believes engine performance to become dominant differentiator from 2014

"In 2014, you will have the variation in engine performance," Newey told AUTOSPORT. "That means the engine power unit itself, which is not only the internal combustion engine but also the various recovery systems bolted to it.

"It is possible that one manufacturer will do significantly better than the others, at which point you might end up with that manufacturer's cars at the front of the grid.
"You could end up with an engine manufacturers' championship."
Newey has long been critical of how restrictive the chassis rules are in F1 and believes the 2014 rules to be even tighter.
He expects this to further swing the balance in favour of engine performance, with the main scope for innovation potential coming in terms of the way that the engines are used.
"The chassis regs, aero wise, are a more restrictive version of what we have already," said Newey.
"The installation of the engine is obviously something that the teams will work on with their engine manufacturers. It remains to be seen whether someone comes up with something novel there and steals an advantage."

I wonder which chassis rules will restricted further.
So looks like there will be less aero toys to play with while there will be more mechanical.

Edit: A single pipe exhaust is the one that springs to mind. Will become virtually impossible to do any floor blowing.

Mercedes would be stupid to not give their customers the entire package, it would make the Mercedes engine look worse than it actually was.

Mercedes would be best placed to concentrate on beating non Mercedes engined competitors.

Yeah, so if the chassis rules are stricter, it's less likely that Merc will have a deficiency there.

Also I think it might be similar for next year, unless there is a new silver bullet, cars will be relatively close on performance, like they were this year before the big boys upgraded their cars while the smaller teams stayed constant.

Don't be upset. They did Michael a favor. I've totally lost interest in F1 but the prospect of Hamilton struggling on this team might make it worth watching a race or two next season.

The big problem they have right now is that they put everything on one card.

Untul now they had Michael to gather interest for the team even if they performed badly and as we saw recently (especially the comments after Michael's exit) also to take the blame.

Now if they fail either it will end in '14 or most of the guys will be gone. In my opinion the honeymoon is over, especially with this new investment.

Too much money at stake with finishing order and payout at end of season for Merc not to be fully supportive of MS and I would expect anything less from Brawn and Mercedes. People have silly ideas of how businesses are run and this is a business 1st and foremost.

Mercedes needs to finish 3-4 to save face and get as much money as possible from the constructors championship.

Since MS has been having the better of Nico.. it would be championship suicide to not put all their effort and resources to both drivers equally. They need every lap of data from both drivers and both garages. Not doing so would lose valuable data to try and fix all the problems the 03 has when finalizing the spec for the 04.. which need to be done probably in the next 8 wks to not be late launch in 2013.

Comparing the technical revamp of 2009 and that of 2014 is irrelevant as 2009 saw a complete redesign of the car aerodynamically, whilst in 2014 engine architecture will be completely changed. Magnitude-wise, I agree 2014 has equally every reason to shake up the grid as in 2009, but this time it won't be aerodynamicist like Newey et al who will make the difference, but the manufacturers, engine departments. Therefore, usual suspects of 2009 revamp could well and truly change. Mercedes and Ferrari could go higher up the grid. Yes, there will also be some drastic aerodynamic changes as well, but I don't expect they will be the differentiator factor. Engines will.

Ergo, Mercedes doesn't need to have the fastest car per se to be competitive in 2014, which will be separate season in itself.

It sounds valid only if Mercedes will not supply engines to other teams.
Currently both McLaren and Force India is faster than Mercedes.

Mercedes will do everything to screw MS' races to make him look bad. They cannot allow MS to beat Nico in the remaining races.
