Formula 1’s McLaren Group has launched an animation unit and secured its first commission from Sky Sports F1 featuring Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

McLaren Animation has been set up as a joint venture with Oscar winning visual effects and animation studio Framestore.

Tooned, a CGI series will feature the voices of Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Alexander Armstrong. It will be debut on the Sky Sports F1 channel on 8 July.

Armstrong will voice Professor M, who he described as a blend of Steve Jobs and Q from James Bond movies.

Chris Waitt and Henry Trotter, the writers and directors of Tooned, have previously worked on 10 O’ Clock Live, That Mitchell and Webb Look and The Armstrong and Miller Show.

The animated division will be closely aligned with McLaren Marketing and Ron Dennis, executive chairman of McLaren Group, said it would create a “more demographically accessible ‘face’ for McLaren”.

“Tooned is the result of extensive market research carried out by McLaren, which John [Allert], our Group Brand Director, and I then analysed carefully together. It’s an exciting and creative concept that addresses the insights gleaned from our research in a very innovative way”, he added.

Framestore founder and chief executive officer Sir William Sargent said: “The films you see today are a start – and their simplicity and quality hide an enormous commitment in time and technology from a world class team at Framestore – one that has been excited by the McLaren challenge in the same way as they have on a Harry Potter or Superman film.”

That will look horrifically out of place in the build-up.

I think its aimed at the younger generation, I loved the Mitchell and Web look and certain elements of 10 O'clock live, and if its the same writers it should have a lot of humour which is both intelligent and satirical. I'll watch it before I make any judgement.

So...

Sky are paying McLaren to make a program about their own drivers, that will run on Sky's F1 channel.

allan mcnish should be there for commentary to the end of the season maybe rotating with davidson , very good stuff
but i didnt get how the safety car is faster than f1 cars in wet conditions ?

The weight helps with the wet tire. At low speeds an F1 car's downforce isn't really working, and they are so light they don't press the wet tread blocks into the road enough.

McLaren make a cartoon for kids. No problem writing a suitably silly script - just use their cockups from the beginning of the season.

No, JA was always going to commentate on X races, not all of them.

Ah i see, thanks for the reply. I know people dislike JA, but for me he is miles better than Legard. Miles better.

Don't be so miserable, not everything has to appeal to adults. It is designed to appeal to young children interested in F1.

Comparison between Sky, BBC and Sky stream from another source.

http://www.zen141854...o.uk/screen.jpg

Sky have a better picture than anyone but look at the screens and how delayed it is. When I emailed Sky they said it was impossible to make Sky Go more real time so it matched better with live timing. Funny how their own stream can be put on faster than Sky can do it themselves.

This is my big beef with Sky, they put so much delay in it makes Live Timing useless as you can see what happened half a lap before Sky puts the same images on the screen. It makes Qualifying useless.

And they BS why they cannot do it.

One good thing though, if BBC are showing it you can see the same incident twice without wating for the repeat. With the unauthorised Sky stream you can watch it 3 times :)

So the Race is not on BBC HD tomorrow? It is Wimbledon Final over there?

Good to see a mix of views between EJ and JH concerning the front wings. When alot of the coverage of sports can be very PR driven, its good to see opinions being shared. Loved the opening sequence for qualifying today too.

What a stupidly bigoted comment. Is "average joe slob" not allowed to watch F1 then? Admittedly a lot of those attracted by Mansellmania in the 80s and 90s drifted away, but lots didn't. Without new fans the sport will die.

This might come as a shock, but there are formula one fans in countries that aren't in the United Kingdom.

Agreed. Sounds like an interesting project. I'm not a Sky customer, so I won't get to see it, but anything that encourages younger viewers to the sport is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

It was always going to happen. They've been allowed to gain such a monopoly in the UK that they can charge what they want, and people will still pay. It's why I'm weaning myself off TV, and using other media. F1's the only live sport I watch, and I'd give it up rather than subscribe to Sky.

I would find it hilarious if the BBC have to extend their coverage, they really hate that.

Not that I'm watching it but still anything that hurts the BBC the better IMO :)

If it carries on much longer they may cut away for BBC One and have it be online only.

Um why? BBC One currently has the Ladies Final at Wimbledon and the programme is scheduled to continue until six - by the time it's meant to change to BBC Two qualifying would have either ended or been cancelled.

Sorry I meant they drop it from BBC Two if they're going to wait a least another hour to restart qualifying.

There's no live sport on BBC Two until 18:10, it should stay there until it's conclusion. Off BBC HD though due to 3D Tennis.

I think they'll just drop the film which is filling the schedules after the Quali.

BBC's rain delay coverage was excruciating. Jake and Eddie only + no access to team members did not make any sort of entertainment or diversion at all. Surely every English-speaking ex-racer isn't already employed by Sky?

lol I've not seen that. Haha awesome from EJ.
Jake makes me cringe so much, he's such a brown nosing BBC fanboy. Seriously makes me want to punch him in the face and I hate violence.
