you can see it from the times they made on track that Kimi is heavier if that is not a case and Romain is 1 second faster than I`m hugely surprised. People immediately think they are running same fuel load but I don`t think so..Kimi was all the time 1-1,5 seconds off Romains times, no way they had same fuel load.

Think again :rotfl:

sector times were the same. the difference is Grosjean didn't cock up and Kimi did.

This is worst than Alonso vs Massa, but Kimi should have the benefict of the dobut because is only the first race.

No points have been given yet. Obviously Räikkönen will not be happy as it was a disastrous qualifying, but let's not doom his whole season yet.

Quite, but I'd rather be Kimi having made a mistake rather than Massa who is plain uselessly slow.

Absolutely gutted for Kimi, will have to hope he can come up with one of his great through the field drives tomorrow

Personally can't stand Grosjean, but I can't deny that was an unbelievable effort, didn't expect a Lotus to end up that close to the front !

Soooooo happy for Grosjean, Lotus and even for Kimi! Grosjean seems like a great guy :) I'm a hardcore Kimi-fan but seeing that Lotus has the pace, I feel good even though Kimi f'd up. This is gonna be a great season! So tight, sweeeet

Hats off to Grosjean, that was an impressive qualifying!
Hopefully Kimi can come back in the race.

Let's face it: it's not going to get any easier for Kimi from here on out. Grosjean will gain experience and the team will move behind him as the PR noise around Kimi quiets down.

Raikkonen made an error or he'd be much further up, maybe not 3rd, but much higher up.

Grosjean... holy moly.

Great job by Grosjean. Kimi and the team did small errors but they cost a lot this time. Kimi had the pace to fight for top5, now he will have a difficult race ahead from here.

let's face it: their first serious lap times were essentially equal.
Only difference is Kimi messed up his last lap and grosjean didnt, shit happens, he isnt lacking pacewise as the first lap time demonstrates.

All that wouldnt have been an issue if he would've had enough time for a second run.

Raikkonen is out of position, so tomorrow with all the tyres he saved it;s going to be cracking to see what he can do.

it's going to be interesting for sure, but I think he is "rusty" and during a full race, fighting with other cars it can be even tougher for him...
Grosjean did a great job, but honestly by some of the testing this year and his past performance I was expecting something good, and about Kimi, I would be really impressed if things started going well since day 1 considering the time he was out of open wheeler racing..

I hope Grosjean will get more PR, but I doubt it's going to be that easy. Fans need to love him also for other stuff than racing. I'm sure he's gonna do well (I believe Kimi and Lotus in general will do well this season), but unfortunately that's not enough. Look at Vettel. The guy won two championships and still he's not a PR dream or a big fan favorite.

Grosjean seems like a great and positive guy but he lacks color. Few good races and let's hope it'll change! :)

Good for both of them. Seeing Grosjean in the 3rd place it can be safely assumed that Lotus is easily a pole winning car. In Australia at least, a place which in the last few years fit the Renault car very well.

Someone needs to serve me humble pie. I gave RG no chance, looks like he is going to trash Kimi all season. The thing is I really I fear Kimi is going to be rattled and lose his composure and many Km fans accusing the French team of Nationalism. Roman seems like a nice guy with a long smiley face. I think that many neutrals would be rooting for him. It makes refreshing change to see a happy face unlike the other miserable drivers

Im not an ounce surprised by Grosjean. Instead Im dissapointed in the problems Kimi is having and not being able to maximize his car right now. Hope he gets the support he needs, since as it is now the team might put their eggs in another basket too soon.

Ok, so Kimi made a mistake, and Romain did not,
But if Kimi would not have made any mistakes, could he have beat Romain's time?

don't think so, probably he'd have got 5th as there was a quite nice gap between Schumacher and Webber.

Maybe not, Romain was damn fast. So all the credit to him. But Kimi would have been in Q2 at least, maybe even top 10. I hope they don't try to take any unnecessary risks with Kimi strategy in the race, the most important thing is now he gets some mileage and his fighting mojo on track. After that we can start making proper comparisons.

This thread will implode when Grojean out performs Kimi in a race. Can't wait to hear excuses from spin doctors.

What did I tell you guys yesterday??

Grojean is not to be underestimated. If he maintains his composure he could be the dark horse giving the front runners a headache. Sort of like what Kubica did in 2008.

As a Kimi supporter I must say... WOW ROMAIN! I really doubt Kimi could have done any better.

Just don't mess it up in the race, like you did in Spa 09.

He really is..
Briatore only focus has always been Alonso. No Grosjean, Piquet Jr. or Fisichella.
Having watched Piquet Jr. in lower series i could not believe the guy in Renault was the same.

p.s: This thread is very very quiet today..

Personally can't stand Grosjean

What? Why? Seriously, I cant imagine how anybody could dislike him. He's a super nice guy.

Anyways, I'd be feeling quite smug about Grosjean's performance if Kimi didn't have his troubles. On one hand, its his own fault for messing up his lap, but perhaps its his also his team's fault for not telling him to hurry up so he could get another lap in. 18th is clearly not representative.

BUT, I'm thinking Kimi is struggling. Its possible we're seeing hints of what Schumacher went through when he came back. Kimi was a second slower in FP3 as well. I wonder if Kimi would have even gotten into Q3. Even half a second off Grosjean's Q2 time would have left him 11th and out. C'mon Kimi! Lets hope he puts in a nice show tomorrow. :)

And Romain, well, I hope anybody who wrote him off before is now looking at him in a different light. There's a reason a lot of us have been telling people to take him more seriously. Great thing is, qualifying has never been his specialty. He's a better racer than qualifier, much like Lewis.;)

Bad mistake by Kimi, although Im not sure why they didnt play it more safe? The car clearly has the pace...

Great job by Grosjean, even with the Hrvoje's trolling, it doesn't take credit away from the fantastic job Grosjean did. Wow.

Still early days though, I dont think Kimi would have beat Grosjean's time either way, but if you think this will be a cake walk for Grosjean your going to be sadly disappointed. :)

hey, he was matching Grosjean on his abandoned lap, less than a tenth down after sector2 IIRC.

Great job by Grosjean; I think it would have been difficult for Raikkonen to beat him even without his mistake in Q1. But it's clear that the overall result is unrepresentative, and the next few races should give us a better chance to compare them. Remember how Heidfeld has a shocking Australian GP last year for various reasons, and then finished on the podium in Malaysia?

He was, but Grosjean's best time was a 1:27.202 at that point. He went on to do a 1:26.498 at the end. So even if he had matched Grosjean's time at that point, he still would have been .7 slower assuming he didn't improve more on his final lap.
