If Bernie or anyone from FOM is reading this post, please get Brian Blessed to do a podium interview. His energy alone would make it a great moment.

Or a more recent example, the hilarious 2009 Abu Dhabi pre-race press conference.

Those still occur don't they?

I'm thinking that rather than asking to remove a new feature that gives something back to fans at the circuit, you ask your broadcaster of choice to show the post-race press conference.

The Canadian GP was a good example of how the new ceremony can add to the sport.  A new winner who is clearly popular with vocal spectators, enjoying himself rather than going through the motions, and an F1 figure (also extremely popular at the venue) conducting the interviews.

As much as I love Alesi, that wasn't an interview. "Talk about the race" isn't a question. This then pushed Ricciardo to rumble on about what was plainly evident from the race coverage which didn't add much of anything.

Depends who does the interview. I think it is great to have it in front of the fans - and with the right (ex-driver) emcee (sorry Mr. Cumberbatch, sorry, Mr. Jordan).

I think that a driver from the host nation's history should do the interview - that would rev the crowd - and that, perhaps, they should bring out chairs, champagne flutes (Kimi and, evidently, Ricciardo, will just drink from the trophy) and spend 15 minutes to do it right.

The podium interviewer just needs to be someone who can actually conduct an interview. It doesn't really matter if it's an ex-driver, celebrity or Eddie Jordan, as long as they can say something better than "Eh, what happened?".

Oh, and the new TV screen flags are just as lame as the revolving boards. Bring back real flags!

I think the best interviews have been made by former drivers who have a good amount of press/broadcasting experience, like Brundle.

Bring televising the normal press conference - Whilst it might be good for the fans at the track its nothing for the viewer on Tv.

I still don't like it but it is better if it someone like Brundle or Alesi doing the interviews than movie and rock stars who know very little about the sport.

I mean they'd be better just plucking some random fans from the crowd and asking them to do it than some of the guys we've seen this season (Benedict Cumberbatch - who has a great name but doesn't know much about the sport from what I could see)

They do televise it. It's not F1's fault if your broadcaster doesn't show it.

They should go the other way and have someone in parc ferme with a mic and a camera and get these guys immediately. It doesn't have to be long or in-depth just a quick heat of the moment thing. See how happy the winner is. See how pissed off the losing teammate is, that kind of thing. Sure it will push the precious podium ceremony back a few minutes but that bit is underwhelming anyways.

Note: Don't do it like MotoGP though. Which does exactly as I describe but wastes a ton of time until they get to the actual podium.

I thought it would be Nick Mason's turn this time. Guess I was wrong. :)

At it could also be much worse. Remember Placido Domingo...?

I do remember Placido Domingo.

And now, surely, after the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix – Max Verstappen's first victory in his first race for Red Bull – we will all remember Placido Domingo as the last random non-racing celebrity who ever got to conduct an F1 podium interview. Right?

He did... and then went on rambling on about football and 2 guys who werent even on the podium. Spent more time on Sainz then on Verstappen.

Embaressing really.

Perhaps a reason to switch off your TV after the checkered flag. Not that someone will say that I didn't warned you....

Rumours Justin Bieber is to do the podium interviews in Montreal. Great if you like that sort of thing but first edition quotes will be duff

It's incredible if the Bieber rumours are true. Martin Brundle did a very, very good interview at the emotionally charged podium in Monaco. He asked some tough questions and got some tough answers (Ricciardo's will be printed in every season review) and he treated the drivers with respect. Compared to Domingo's interview in Barcelona it was Pulitzer Prize material! And even if Domingo or Bieber would ask the same questions as Brundle they wouldn't get the same answers. So FOM should stick with people who can do it properly: Brundle, Coulthard, McKenzie... Who else... JYS? Rotate and repeat.

Exactly. Having the interviews done by random celebrity isn't good for anyone - I can't imagine the drivers are enjoying it and the fans don't get much insight (which should be the point of this whole thing). I still think the idea of podium interviews is good (mostly for spectators on track), but it really needs a good execution in order not to be awkward and cringeworthy.

Has Villeneuve already done one in Canada? A slightly crazy podium interview with him would be something I'd be looking forward to.

I liked the times when they would put a laurel wreath around the winners neck, present them with their trophy, play the national anthems and leave it at that.

The Bieber story was a hoax, Canadians are not that dumb. Jacques Villeneuve would be a very worthy choice, but no word yet on that.

Quite frankly I think they are awful, cheap and crappy looking podium, horrible flags, ghastly "sponsor" trophies and flavour of the month interviewers.

Ghastly.. the whole thing.  tbh I stopped watching them now, I think about mid-way through 2015 I just started turning off as soon as the last car crossed the line.  Please lets go back to the old podiums.

All the drivers who finish off the podium always seem to have a nice looking older woman in team uniform accompany them to interviews.  They always stand behind the driver and they never say anything. What are their jobs other than to look good?

press officers, they arrange who gets to ask questions, record answers and use them in their press releases.

The press officer.

Their job entails making sure the driver and other team members meet their media requirements: i.e.Give interviews to everyone in the pen, meet with TV crews for those race build up filler items, grant reporters access to the people on the pit wall, make sure the driver gets to the magazine interview/photo shoot. Handle all incoming requests for interviews, information and manage the communication of the official 'party line'.

So no they are not the team Mums.

What I would like is if after every question the interviewer hands the drive the mic, the driver then answers the question and drops the mic. Everyone stands still as though nothing has happened except the interviewer who stops to pick it up. Then the process repeats itself for every question of the ceremony.

I have nothing else to add.

Justin Beiber in Monaco. Absolute ****ing joke that he was anywhere near the podium, appeared to be something to do with Hamilton as there seemed a very warm embrace between the two of them. How long before its some other manufactured attention seeking celebrity? Lets get Kim Kardashian down to Texas this year why not!
