I hope the following is permissible here. A very brave young friend here in Farnham is Rachel Morris, who won a hand cycling Gold Medal at the Beijing Paralympics. Training hard on a local road to defend her title she had the misfortune to be rammed from behind by a passing car. She escaped, thankfully, with minor personal injuries, but her hand made carbon bike was a write off, and a replacement is around £7,500. There's a local appeal to replace it - here:

If anyone feels like offering this British Gold Medallist some support, please donate. Rachel lost both legs to a neurological condition, but she's one hell of an athlete, and a born fighter...

I can't imagine why this wouldn't be 'permissible' Doug, I think you've done a lovely thing. :)

We're in the direst financial straits of our adult lives, but will donate anyway.

I agree, a good cause. Not to go OT, but I believe Alex Zanardi will be competing too?

That's great news. Can someone explain to me why, unless it was a hit and run, that the insurance company of the car which hit Rachel's bike didn't pay out (especially in view of the adverse publicity that would receive if they refused or held back)?

Unsure of the answer here - but right now time is absolutely critical for her. I am confident that any final excess will be passed on to other probably even more deserving good causes.

Police are still investigating the case in which more than one car was involved, as well as Rachel's bike.
Liability is so far disputed by all parties.
Rachel needs a new bike now.

Difficult I would have thought, if you run into the back of another vehicle.

Rachel has Leigh Day & Co acting for her, but even they won't be able to sort the matter out within two weeks of an accident occurring.
Given the fact that the target for a replacement bike has been met and this thread has nothing to do with the history of motor racing, can't we leave it at that?

If you don't want to know the score, look away now...

Rachel took the bronze. :)

Not quite Zanardi standard but considering she had her shoulder dislocated in the collision a couple of months ago and it still limits her power, everyone here is elated she has now added a bronze to the Peking gold. A bit like a thoroughbred V12 with an intermittent misfire...
