A full-length character portrait of Max Biaggi, by Dean Adams, who's the master of such things. A long read, but a very very good one.

I'm not always the biggest Soup fan but that was very fair and well worth reading. I'm really going to miss Max.

Marquez will start from the back of the grid after barreling Corsi off the track in FP2. 2nd yellow card, 1st was for doing the same to Kallio at Motegi, you would think this time the penalty would be harsher.

There must be a lot of promises for riders of that caliber to join a team with Mahindra's record

Bit of a Brit racing bombshell: Tommy Hill to take sabbatical from racing in 2013

I guess you can draw a few things from that. 1) The drawbridge for decent world championship rides is most definitely raised. 2) Hill may also have heard about the likelihood that Swan Yamaha will be racing next year. 2b) MSV's Superbike rules have been lauded by motorcycle pundits worldwide, but fully half of 2012's racewinning teams are either pulling out or said to be seriously considering it. As AMA Pro Racing could tell you, sometimes regulations that "simplify" racing cut revenues -- at least for the top teams -- faster than costs. 3) Casey Stoner's decision on becoming a father to go and do other things isn't that unusual for a bike racer. 4) Who'd have thought that in the space of 12 months, these two men would be out of motorcycle racing?

A suspension or an actual race penalty like 30 seconds added to your race time. We have already seen how much of a cocked up start can be rectified in a lap.

What the hell is that. How can he think he'll get a WSBK or MotoGP ride after a year off if he can't get one now ?

Try Eugene Laverty's answer.

"Looking ahead to next season I think it’s going to be another great year for the championship, however that may not last much further than 2013 following the recent announcement of the running of the championship," said the Irishman.

"Next year is an extremely important one for both WSBK and MotoGP riders as 2014 could see the strongest riders placed in the top class and the rest left behind. Never has there been a more important time to shine."

It's possible. He may even have his eye on partnering Sam Lowes in Yamaha's re-entry to WSBK in 2014.

Just saw this.
Would be classed as a harsh move in a last lap battle for a win.
Way beyond acceptable for friday practise.

Cant see him being allowed (by the riders) to get away with that in Moto GP next year.....

If he's going to pull moves like that, it won't matter if he's the best, worst or somehwere in between. nasty looking crash for Corsi and the outcome could have been worse than it was.

He's loaded with talent but he only has one mode on track and it's aggressive. He's do well to learn how to practice intelligently. As it is he's way overdue for some actual discipline, not the kids gloves stuff they've given him up until now.

It was only going to be a matter of time before Audi started making major changes. Something needs to change - they can't keep going on like this.

Doesn't look like Bradley Smith's going to pull off an Abraham.

Another promising qualifying session from Takaaki Nakagami. Who's incidentally one of only four rookies with full-time rides in Moto2 this year. I suppose it all puts Gino Rea's disappointment in perspective, that after all his troubles he's only got three points fewer than reigning 125cc champion Nico Terol.

Technical Regulations

Effective 01 January 2014:

MotoGP Class

The use of the ECU and datalogger provided by the Championship organisers is compulsory.

MSMA manufacturers, supplying machines for a maximum of four entries per manufacturer, will use their own electronics software but in this case are subject to a maximum fuel capacity of 20 litres.

All other machines must use the ECU, datalogger and software provided by the Championship organisers and these machines may have a maximum fuel capacity of 24 litres.

Let's see what Honda do now

Dorna have caved, then. Manufacturers get to keep writing their own ECU software and keep their stupid 20 litre fuel limit. Claiming Rule Teams get spec software and the current fuel allowance.

Good luck with your championship, at least you've bought out the only competition.

The factories that use their own software will be forced to use 20 litres of fuel while only having 5 engines per rider per season, and with no rev limit...

This might actually force the likes of Honda to use the software provided by Dorna because the alternative is very expensive...

Honda and Yamaha are already going to enter that class, either with their "production" racers or in partnership with chassis builders. Wouldn't be surprised if HRC paid the salary for one of their non-factory riders (Jonathan Rea, presumably), either.

But I don't really think a litre less of fuel and slightly stricter engine life rules will send the works bikes back into the clutches of the CRTs. These are the kinds of challenges the MSMA teams meet with ease.

The point is that the factories that opt to using their own software will face a lot more in the way of expense compared to those that use the software provided by Dorna along with being at a disadvantage with fuel and engines. This could be seen as a divide and conquer tactic from Dorna. We know Honda want their electronics and smaller fuel tanks, so Dorna are giving it to them, the question is whether all factories want the same.

At this point I imagine that Suzuki will go the Dorna route.

The way the rules are written is quite unusual actually. "MSMA" is actually written directly into the technical regulations -- presumably, a team which claims membership of that body is locked into the 20-litre fuel limit and using their own software. Afaik, Suzuki, Aprilia and Kawasaki are still MSMA members (and would therefore have to resign in order to accept 24 litres, spec software and 12 engines a year), BMW are not.

The MSMA in MotoGP generally follow Honda, it is true, but I believe the way the voting worked, both Yamaha and Ducati had an effective veto.

Maybe it makes sense to Senor Ezpeleta but IMHO hardwiring your temporary political quarrels into your race regulations is a shit way of doing things.

And Ducati have got to be worried about that proposed in-season engine development freeze for 2014.

This is what broke F1. So if a manufacturer starts out with a lackluster engine, the whole season is a wash? Talk about ruining the show.
