Lewis Hamilton scored McLaren's 150th Grand Prix pole today, and I hadn't realized until Martin Whitmarsh pointed it out that the first was scored by Peter Revson, at Mosport, in 1972.

Here are a couple of truly bad photos of that event, shot by an eleven-year-old with a Kodak Instamatic (Back in the days when an eleven-year-old with an Instamatic could get close to the action without being arrested, evicted and prosecuted).

Any other recollections of memorable poles from those 150?

Is that Andrea De Adamich that Revvie's talking to in the first picture ? Looks like JP Beltoise in the 2nd ?

Was Denny's pole in the M23 for the 1973 South African GP really only McLaren's second Pole ?

1) As far as I recall yes, and 2) I don't think so.

Fittipaldi had two poles (Brazil and Canada) in 1974.

I found a nice press release about McLaren team members first pole memories here: http://www.f1katewalker.com/

The first F1 pole seems to have been the 1968 Race of Champions....

Well, I have to say he bears a strong (albeit hirsute) resemblance to him, and the gesture is pure Maurice.

Dave Luff on the right.

Thanks

Nigel

Thanks for the correction Tim

I wouldn't go anywhere near that site, Alan, except for a good laugh. We had great fun demolishing its nonsense a couple of years back in the Blood Pressure thread (sadly no longer available). I think the best example of its idiocy is its listing of a team called 'Arthur Owen' as the winner of three championships in the '60s:

Slightly outside of the parameters of the original question, but didn't McLaren take pole (as well as winning) both the RoC and International Trophy in '68?

RoC: McLaren on pole at 1:30.0, ahead of Spence and JYS. Bruce P1 in race. International Trophy: Hulme on pole at 1:24.3, ahead of Spence and McLaren. Hulme also P1 in race.

Which is a long-winded way of saying yes.

Martin Whitmarsh yesterday:

"For all you train-spotters out there, our first was scored by Peter Revson, at Mosport Park, in Canada, on September 23rd 1972, in a McLaren M19C, with a lap-time of 1min 13.6sec. Oh, and, by the way, I haven't forgotten the 1968 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch, where we also got the pole, but that was a non-championship Formula 1 race!"

I hadn't realized I had a snap of Maurice Philippe - I'm chuffed, thanks!

And inevitably I'm proved wrong  although to be fair I was referring to the chap in the dark jacket

I was going to suggest that the chap in the white jacket might be Regazzoni - but he didn't have a 'tache in 1972 ):

At the risk of highjacking my own thread, here are a few more from the same race:

Unremarkable pics, to say the least, but a few points of interest - like the wonderful "garages" visible behind Cevert, and the sheer benevolence of Denny, and the unthinkably casual (by today's standards) atmosphere.

Fantastic comment by Martin Whitmarsh - an anoraks anorak by the looks of things !!

Agree.

Who is the blond hair chap in yellow overall, looking to Denny? Bill Brack?

Thank you all for your comments and identifications!

The one I can't figure out is in the STP jacket visible behind Denny. You just catch one of his eyes behind Jackie. Who is that guy...?
