Does anyone know why any cars running at Le Mans wearing BP decals didn't actually have the lettering on them? All there is is a yellow shield with the chequered flag. The first time I saw it on a model I thought it was printing error but looking through the books it happened on a variety of cars in these two years, Healeys, Mini Marcos, Ford France GT40, etc and there is no mention made of why...

My first thought was that an event sponsor was maybe blocking the visibility of a rival's product, perhaps Shell as they featured prominently at the time. However, checking the Ford France car from 1967 on page 99 of Ford au Mans, that theory is blown out of the water by the image of the Hawkins/Bucknum car on the facing page which shows a prominently placed BP sign trackside on the exit to Indianapolis.

If it were a single race then it could be put down to a printing cock-up, but at least two years running? I know it's trivial but it's been niggling at me for years!

Sponsoring was not permitted in the period...

Several cars seem to have Marchall logos? The NART 365P32 'White Elephant' certainly had Goodyear on the side...

At one time, all entrants had to use [nameless] fuel provided by the organisers. Maybe it was still the case as late as 1966 so they wouldn't have been allowed to claim they were running on BP.
