Not sure where this thread may go, but consider it a start for all things Monterey 2012. (Monterey, Calif. weekend of August 17-19 for many events.)

Please post notes, suggestions, lesser known events or cars of particular interest. Could be at Laguna Seca's Motorsports Reunion or Pre-Reunion, literature events, club gatherings, marque gatherings, events & displays at Pebble Beach, Jet Center, Quail, or auctions.

I expect to get around to a number of events, including a newer (and I believe free!) one: Legends of the Autobahn, Friday 17, at the Monterey-Rancho Canada Golf Course, Carmel Valley, CA.

Laguna Seca Raceway, Saturday noon, I expect to be on vendor island for this awkwardly titled event described below.

"Two stalwart names in the colorful history of Shelby American, Peter Brock and Bob Bondurant, will share some of their stories of those early years at the Picnic with Shelby Cobra Saturday, August 18 at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The 30-minute picnic begins at 12:15 p.m. in the Ford Motor Company display, located at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s Yamaha Marketplace."

Mike, I look forward to meeting you. John Morton should be in your group with the Collier Collection's Elva Porsche. We will be releasing a new edition of Sylvia Wilkinson's book, "The Stainless Steel Carrot". Sylvia, John and Peter Brock will be doing signings at the BRE tent.

Hi Mark and Mike,

Looks like I will be making another road trip to Monterey - not as mobile as I used to be, and will be hanging around "Trans-Am Alley" - usually the Chad Raynal #64 69 camaro. Hope to see you there.

I don't usually frequent TNF (usually on the Tech forum), but I should be out at the track all day on Friday. I looked over the entry list and there are quite a few cars I'm looking forward to seeing. I'd love to be there for the whole thing, but that would be more than the Mrs. can bear. At least on Friday all of the different run groups get a chance to get on track.

There will be practice all day Thursday too.

Some cars of particular interest to me:

http://www.rmauction...?...D=r117&fc=0 raced at Westwood by Chuck Parsons and Monte Shelton

http://www.rmauction...?...D=r127&fc=0 restored by Rudi Koniczek here in the Victoria area (according to the website, in British Colombia...when did that happen?)

http://www.goodingco...ferrari-500-trc raced at Westwood opening day in 1959 (and elsewhere) by Frank Becker (earlier by Pete Lovely, etc.)

http://www.goodingco...petition-spider won the 1954 Seafair at Bremerton

Mark, will you be at Automobilia Monterey on Wednesday?

Vince H.

Vince, I may make the Automobilia show late on Wed, though Sylvia's book will not.

Below is info on a lessor known event with potentially great merit.

Hagerty Insurance Sponsored Seminar -- Cobra Racers panel, focusing on the Shelby racing stable from 1963-65, . . . free and open to the public, be sure to RSVP.

Cobra Racers: The Cobra vs. Ferrari rivalry that burned briefly but intensely from 1963-65 was one of racing’s greatest rivalries. Ever since racing at Le Mans in 1959 for Aston Martin, Carroll Shelby wanted to return to the world sports car stage with his own car and upset the status quo. The road to his aspiration drove straight through Maranello — Shelby would have to take on Ferrari to win. Hagerty will present famed Cobra Daytona Coupe designer Peter Brock and his hand-picked panel of some of the greatest surviving personalities from the Shelby racing stable from 1963-65 for an exciting discussion and audience question-and-answer session. Panelists include John Morton, Jerry Grant and Lew Spencer, some of the most well-known surviving Cobra race drivers.

Thanks for this, Mark. That is one of the few classic books I never bought, this may deserve its own thread here.

Thanks for your encouraging words. I will at least add a post to the book thread. With the scope of Sylvia's new chapter in this "revisited" edition, we needed to illustrate John's racing for another 35 plus years. Adding that John is known for racing many different cars, the photo coverage became great.

Cool Mark. When it arrives I'll do a blast email to many friends who'd be interested.

Maybe it'll inspire Mr. Posey to re-release The Mudge Pond Express. (another of the few I missed in the day)

Anyone have any photos of the blue elf-liveried #15 March 75B from the Pre-historics?

The driver might be interested in prints, his first time in an Atlantic car and he did rather well.

Thanks.

Just so you know, I did see your shot of the car on your site... of my friend's friend driving on Weekend 2. My friend drove on Weekend 1 to a 2nd and a 1st, in the Pre-Historics, but I'd love to see whatever you have.

Appreciate your reply, and your covering the event. :)

Vince: You may know that Price's 77B was brown and tan, with graphics saying "Charles Jourdan" on the tub sides. IIRC, he ran that car all through '77.

Just a boring vintage note:

After doing over 500 cars in the '70s and '80s, I walked away from hand-painting race car graphics around 1990 to pursue broader pastures.

In the top two photos, seeing such wonderful cars restored to such perfection, but with terribly wrong fonts pains me a bit.

I guess I'm shocked none of these vinyl "artists" can even manage to match a simple driver's typestyle as it was originally done...

Big question: Are there any actual race car sign artists available out there, vinyl or not, properly servicing the vintage racers?

Bigger Question: Wouldn't the owners rather they they were done as original, or at least matching the way the car originally looked?

I'm half-tempted to break out the brushes again, provided I know there's a niche market for it.

I don't recall the start holdup, but yes, it was awesome. Quite a field as well... Cogan won the race in a RT1, Price closing in 2nd, perennially-fast amateur Ken Duclos was 3rd in a B34 (I think), and Jeff Wood 4th in another 77B.

They tell me it was an amateur race. :)

My recollection is that the Jourdain livery was on Price's 78B for a few races only. I'll have to dig into the files to confirm my recollection that the car was red.

Don't hold your breath, it will probably take a fair bit of time.
