All,

Around 20 years ago, my father was involved in the filming of a Shell commercial for British TV which sought to (semi!) re-create, I believe, certain footage of the 1961 British Grand Prix. The "period" grand prix cars were to be filmed in black and white, whilst a bright red Audi Quattro would carve its way through the field - I believe the marketing "angle" being that the modern Audi could have won the race, had it been miraculously morphed back in time, based on the fact that it was using modern high quality oil. Questionable, I grant you - but this is the marketing business we are dealing with!

A number of cars were involved including my father in our JBW Climax (since sold), as well as other well known historic characters including John Harper, the late Rodney Felton and the late Anthony Mayman. The footage was filmed over three days at Snetterton, and I gather was rather lucrative as well as being very sociable in the evenings! I realise that a JBW did not compete in the '61 race, but as I say, this is definitely marketing/ showbiz territory rather than accurate documentary....

Despite a thorough search of the internet, I have been unable to locate the footage in question. Shell commercials, of course, are numerous - yet I have drawn a blank with this one. I heard a rumour that it was used in certain ITV regions here in the UK, but certainly neither my father nor I ever saw it.

Given the vast knowledge resource of TNF, I wonder if any fellow members may be able to help in locating such a clip?

Many thanks,

Hamsterace

It was discussed in this thread about another Shell advert:

Shell Oils vintage Ferrari TV commercial (2011), Just watch it...

The consensus there was that it was the 1959 GP, not 1961 - maybe this might help in tracking it down.

Many thanks Tim. Obviously it helps when those actually involved in producing something (ie. my father) get their facts right first!

I'll make some further enquiries with the revised information, and will post again if I find anything.

When one has missed a post for whatever reason it can be wonderful to be made aware of it, so much more, when the beauty of an engine note is brought back by the content of that post, and then also sadly to remind us of how boring the engines of today sound in comparison.

I am reminded of the quote by either Frank Gardner or Ross Jensen (doubtless someone more knowledgable than I can confirm) who famously referred to a Cooper-Climax as sounding "like a duck farting in long grass".

Whilst the Coventry Climax four banger is unlikely to go down in the pantheon of aural greats such as the 250F Maser, V16 BRM, V12 Matra etc., I dread to think what he'd have made of the present generation of F1/ GP2 or - god forbid - GP3 engines....

Why does the GP3 motor sound so awful? When I heard them at Silverstone last year, I seriously thought it was a motorcycle engine - like an old Norton Commando or something! How can a four cylinder turbo engine sound like that? And why didn't someone do something about it right at the inception of the series?

There is a brand new GP3 car coming in 2013 and the Sky GP2 and GP3 commentator says it sounds superb.

Then again, the majority of what that young man says makes me cringe so I'll reserve judgement.
