Great man - Single handedly made proper racing gearboxes available to "The masses". Above all, the boxes were brilliantly conceived, an elegance and simplicity of design lacking in so many pieces of equipment we use.
That is a very good point,.... sad news.

I had the pleasure of using his Mk8 & Mk9 transaxles in Formula Fords. If anyone could engineer a gearbox to manage my ineptness, it was Mike.

Great man - Single handedly made proper racing gearboxes available to "The masses".
Made the Hewland Arrow 100cc Kart Engine that had a reduction gear to start with, without it very dominant in the Britain class in the UK.
... If anyone could engineer a gearbox to manage my ineptness, it was Mike.
RIP
I won't even try to improve on these defining comments.Farewell to the last of the "three musketeers" (the others being Frank Costin and Keith Duckworth).
RIP Mr. Hewland, and Thanks for your amazing contributions to our sport.

Surely yopu mean Mike Costin, of Cosworth fame' who is still with us I think.
In any case, a sad loss with yet another motor racing engineering icon passing away. =(

Tony,
I hazard a guess you've probably rebuilt more Hewland gearboxes than anyone else!

Total disaster!
After one race at Bridgehampton we were both back to Hewland.
Lesson learned.
One of the greatest suppliers who ruled every level of road racing here in the USA.
On my very short list of people I dreamed of having lunch with. RIP Mike Hewland and my prayers go out to his family.

That's the VW-based creations. But Hewland were also quite brave investing in the castings and machining to make other, larger, transmissions like the HD5, the LG series and so on.
People like Peter Holinger did make gears for Hewland boxes, even improved gears and dog-rings for Hewland boxes, but always they were working with the Hewland product to start with.
