I was watching this excellent video on youtube when i saw one Boeing 747 (09:34) from BOAC (sponsor of the race). My question is where was that plane parked? Is that an airport or BOAC brought it for advertising or something? Its also intriguing that according to wikipedia (i know...) BOAC received its first 747 on april 22 1970 and the race was on april 12.

To be honest, it looks like an advertising hoarding to me.

Nearest / only airport near to Brands in 1970 capable of taking a 747 would've been Heathrow and, pre M25, I can't see how they'd have got a big plane like that over to Kent. Think Doug Nye might've been working at Brands then so may he'll chip in.

Definitely a hoarding from the races sponsor, 747's were third behind Saturn V's and Concord in my list of want to travel in aircraft at the time. Until I saw the clip I had forgotten just how much of a buzz there was around wide body jets.

That was a hoarding, I live very near Brands and was at the race, no 747 have ever parked that near to the circuit.

I can't recall the actual Brands Hatch "airport" ever being discussed on here. It was the rough grass field across the road from the paddock. The only time I was in it was after the 68 BGP. Graham Hill's plane was the largest I recall seeing there and he was (ironically, given events years later) standing discussing with another pilot just how hairy it was (with two medium trees in the boundary hedge on the approximate longest run) and was talking about procedures in the event of having to abort a take off. Jackie and Helen Stewart then appeared (JYS with wrist in cast, looking shattered) to be greeted by NGH with " 'Allo you poor bugger!".

Now, now, play nicely!

Anyway, I remember this very well. They landed the 747 at Biggin Hill and taxied it to Brand Hatch. It's a BOAC/British Airways tradition that was revived for the Olympics - see this documentary.

I was wondering why the Hammersmith Flyover was restricted to a single lane
