R.I.P. Sid

He and Steve Olvey are two unsung heroes who have done so much for so many drivers in F1/IndyCar racing.

He was 84 years old now and has achieved more in those 84 than most people would do in 2012 years.

Respect!

I hope against hope it's not true.

One of the most important men in the history of our sport. A true gentleman who will be sadly, so sadly missed.

RIP Sid. Say hi your friend Ayrton.

RIP Professor Sid Watkins. A long life well-lived: he and his family can be proud of the huge advances in F1 and motorsport safety for which he has been responsible, in addition to personally saving a number of drivers' lives.

Very very sad news.

I'm not religious and neither was he, but I hope he will find his friend Ayrton again.

Gary Hartstein (the F1 doctor) is talking about him on Twitter, which, other than an official statement, is probably as near to official confirmation as we're likely to get.

Gary Hartstein is tweeting about the Prof, i doubt he'd do that unless, sadly, it is true.

It's very sad. I think most, if not all drivers would tell you if they wanted 1 person to treat them and look after them after suffering an injury, it'd be him. I hope both Sky and the BBC recognise him over the Singapore weekend, even if it's just a short feature with interviews with some of the people he's helped in the past, and talking about his influence and how he helped to make motor racing, not just F1 specifically, a sport with proper medical facilities at tracks and such like. RIP Sid.

Nice tribute by Gary Hartstein on Twitter:

"For a long time I wanted to call him every time I had to make a decision. Then I just started thinking "what would he do in this situation?" And finally, for better or for worse, I realized I was doing just what he'd do (but probably not as well!). When I told him this a few years ago, he smiled and said "Of course old boy! Youve had a bloody great teacher!" It took me a few years before I actually called him Sid. It was at spa, maybe 1993, and i asked him if I could. And he said, "the bums sleeping on the stairs of my hospital call me Sid, I don't see why you shouldn't". "

It is desperately sad news, he gave so much to Formula 1 - I hope the FIA / F1 Teams & Drivers do something to commemorate him at the next GP, he really does deserve it.

There was a committed F1 forums campaign(Knight the Prof) to get Sid Watkins Knighted, a few years ago, a pity it didn't seem to go anywhere.

Just found out about this, I'm quite in tears, its very sad.

It sickens me that he wasn't made 'Sir Sid Watkins' many many years ago. He's done so much for the sport and we owe him so much. VERY upset.. another legend has left us.

I guess he can go fishing with Ayrton now, I know they both loved to.

RIP and thank you.

News of his passing emerged on Twitter almost 90 minutes ago now, and as yet, not one news outlet has mentioned it. I fear it is bad news, but I still have my fingers well and truly crossed that it isn't.

Agreed. I'm surprised that Autosport has not reported it, or that any of its journalists have tweeted it. Henry Hope Frost has tweeted it, but to my knowledge he is not a regular reporter at Autosport.
