Some of you will be entertained and intrigued by these bizarre vehicles; others will be greatly annoyed. I take full responsibility.

These are a few of the mechanical creations that take part in the Burning Man happening out on Black Rock Desert each year.

The Burning Man story was done by Mark Amos, and I've never seen any of these vehicles in person or seen/heard them run. So to be perfectly honest, I have no idea.

I really like this VW, though. It reminds me of an old Road & Track cartoon (Stan Mott? Russell Brockbank?) in whch a VW Beetle appears on the road at the horizon, a tiny speck. As it approaches, it continues to grow in appearance until it finally arrives, and we learn it's as big as a house.

I like to think the cartoon inspired this vehicle. It's a long way to a punchline and you have to respect that.

I think I see a Deutz Engine cooling fan back there so, Air-Cooled, it should.

Air-cooled compression ignition engines make sense.

The exhaust outlet has a "Diesel" flavour too. :)

I have learned via the Hemmings Motor News Blog, which picked up our Burning Man feature and linked it, that the giant Beetle is a 1959 Walter airport crash truck that has been reskinned.

Great idea. I endorse and/or support this product or service.

The cartoon vehicle was a Cyclops- a Stan Mott creation.

Thanks. In my mind, I can picture the cartoon equally well as a VW/Brockbank and as a Cyclops/Mott. Old age + good imagination.
