[Derwent Motorsport]

I was recently able to sell a substantial part of my model collection through the specialist auction house Vectis, who did a great job. I am now sorting through my book collection to do the same thing but I can't find a specialist auction house for motoring books. Some of the books are prewar but most are 50s to 70s.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Does rather depend on where you live! No good recommending a bookshop in Stroud if you live in Alice Springs! Motor Books and Accessories in St Martin's Court WC2 might be interested; the Eoin Young's bookshop is still listed here Otherwise Ebay may be your best bet.

A rather nice way is to use Peter Moore's Motor Book Postal Auction service (find him easily by Googling). This is not very 'high tech' and is conducted in a surprisingly old fashioned way with a list of the books being sold circulated to a large number of interested parties who then submit bids by post, selling to the highest bidder as normal. However, most auction houses treat books badly by making up lots of several often unrelated titles and seldom get good prices. Likewise dealers offer a very low price compared to the recognised value.

Peter's service is a breath of fresh air! Needless to say, I have no connection to Peter other than as a satisfied customer over many years.

The Collectibles department of Bonhams are always able to advise upon selling book collections, and they generally Lot books very sensibly, recognising the individual value of certain rare titles or editions. Otherwise I find increasingly that eBay is very effective, though time and effort consuming. I would also highly recommend Peter Moore's MBPA operation.
