So the weeks between races will be 1-3-1-3-2-2-3-1-3-4-2-2-2-1-2-1-2-1.

The first half of the season with many three-week breaks doesn't seem to best to keep up interest, I'd prefer races every 2nd week. But team staff probably likes those 3-week breaks. I think the ideal calendar would be compact with 1-2-1-2 week breaks and have one more 4-week break when factories would be closed. That would keep interest high, yet give a holiday for team staff.

I don't like having such a long tail end of flyaways to end the season. After the circus leaves Europe there are still seven races to go when as recently as 2007 there were only three (Japan, China, Brazil). I enjoyed waking up in the early morning for Japan and China knowing the drama of the 'last stage of the season' was packed into just a few races; now we're in a slightly odd situation where the run-in is so long it loses some of its drama.

Korea, for example, just feels like a filler yet it means as much in the championship as any other GP. This opinion is probably just a result of my seeing the championship run-in as the post-European season but over the last couple of seasons it's just felt a little distended in the closing stages.

I think a 16 race season is perfect but obviously we aren't going back to that any time soon.

I know what you mean. When I got into F1 there were as few as 1 non-European races at the end of the season, Japan usually. You knew when the Italian Grand Prix was over that it was crunch time. I don't mind that the season goes in into November now, but it does feel a bit strange. At least we now have USA and Brazil to finish off, which are at better times for us.
