Yes, I was impressed then at R. Smith's bottle for organising that one. Not sure it did much for south east road rallying's future though. His next  "cunning plan" was the "London Docklands Rally". Massed acres of derelict space at that time. Allegedly scuppered by MSA safety concerns but possibly because there were simply not enough scuba divers in the region to provide cover. Less impressed by Mr Smith later on.

I see TC2 on the 77 Happy Eater was in the middle of Croydon. If born then, Lewis would surely not have been able to resist volunteering to man that control.

We should perhaps clarify for a bemused wider audience that "Happy Eater" was a then newish chain of fast food restaurants located on A roads in the south east of England.

For those on TNF who never ever venture into the scary arena of "Racing Comments", Lewis Hamilton and Croydon are well.....forever linked.

Didn't Crystal palace feature in the (1988?) running of a resurrected Tour of Britain, originally "won" by Jim McRae in a Group N Sierra Cosworth....until its suspension bushes were shown to be a bit non Group N?

Lewis and Croydon are surely more 'forever socially distant' than 'forever linked' ... ;)

The Happy Eater chain of roadside restaurants was set up to compete with the Little Chef chain which was the dominant force in the UK market,  Despite the massive publicity from the above mentioned rally   ;)  Happy Eater were later taken over by Little Chef, who in turn died out, although a last gasp was attempted by getting master-chef Heston Blumenthal to devise a new menu.

As for Lewis and Croydon, those unfamiliar with the tale can look  here.  It is entertaining if you have time to kill!  One of the longer running threads on the forum.

Here's another BBC recording from the Palace. This is from the October 1970 meeting, in lovely autumnal sunshine. A shame that the trackside camera at Park Curve got taken out mid-race.

And, as a bonus you get the result of the 3 o'clock at Newmarket, just in case you missed it.

I took a walk around the old circuit the other day. Must have been a hell of a circuit to race round. Surprising amount of elevation change too. That wall at Ramp Bend must have claimed a few!
