Cmon guys, watch again. Scott Sharp's car had a wheel clipped off even before it went airborne. it wasn't just touching, it was a hard crash mid track. The DW just flips from being touched, and there is no wheen interlocking if both cars have faired wheels.

The next time I see Ben Bowlby I am going to take him to task for kicking Saudoso's dog or whatever he did.

Cmon magoo, I left engineering school straight to 3D animation, advertising and software development. The old engineer muscles need to be stretched somehow from time to time.

Drove over it with the wind tunnel model, presumably.

I think the Porsche driver was on the LH kerbing and overdid his attempt to get off it.

saudoso-..and there is no wheen interlocking if both cars have faired wheels.

...as Porsche was in countersteer, front wheel cogged on the Delta rear wheel, launching it. It probably is more prone to flip than a 4 wheel rectangular platform, but in the circumstances, already losing 1/2 g over hump a std car would have taken off...

Anyway, sweet race, despite having started from back of grid due to unclassed tech demonstrator, waiting first lap GT fracas to be sorted out, then climbing through field to 3rd overall, only losing places on the wave-throughs the championship cars got, we lost 2 laps certainly, maybe 3...not a bad showing, specially as Atlanta is a real track...so not just a straight line special. Unfinished business concluded, 5th in an ALMS field, lap times correct, even if car in substantially Le Mans config, let's see what the future brings.

Thanks for sharing those comments here, was good to catch up in pitlane

It's worth pointing out how crazy T12 at Atlanta is, I've been through it slowly once in a racecar (Ford GT - thanks Robertson Racing :-) ) and you really can't see anything so you have to commit early. A GT car that's loose and taking a lot of exit kerb out of the chicane needs to settle itself before commiting to Turn 12 and I think this contributed to the incident.

Lets be clear, that corner is easy flat in a P2 car, generally flat in a GTE car, but not always. I would imagine it's not easy flat by any means in a Porsche cup car on hard single-brand spec tyres.

Racing incident for me.

Ben

Nice zero supression on that graph. It completely distorts the small bit of noise in the data until it looks like signal.

On a track as fast as Le Mans, pure power is probably much more relevant than power/weight.

I think Deltawing would fare quite well on that kind of graph.

I think power/drag might be more interesting.

I agree that having CD and frontal area figures to go with it would be interesting, but I guess we will never know. It is a wingless car with expected far superior CL/CD though.

And this was at Road Atlanta, not Le Mans.

LMP1= 1.68 m2
DW= 1.40 m2

LMP1 CD (Le Mans spec)= 0.798
DW CD (Le Mans spec) =0.310

LMP1 L/D (LM spec)= 4.10
DW L/D (LMspec )= 5.95

So it's 1/2 the power, 1/2 the weight, 1/3 the drag and and 1/2 the downforce.

RDV frightens me sometimes... :)

Anyway, my point was that on power alone vs laptime the Deltawing would fare better. And that's because it has a very low drag.

It all depends on how these graphs are constructed; if for example we measured (power^(1/3)/(Cd*area)) vs laptime we would essentially be measuring, more than the performance of single vehicles, the impact of top speed on lap time at le Mans...

1/2 the cost, 1/2 the fuel and 1/2 rectangle.

You can't complain about different rules or concessions in something like sportscar racing :p

And twice as likely to look sick when punted by a Porsche.
(And anything else for that matter.)

Chris Harris video: Deltawing drive

The video includes a brilliant chat from Deltawing designer Ben Bowlby. It's the most interesting car-based interview I've heard all year, and it makes me feel even more strongly that this car deserves to race again.

Seen that, genius is what Bob Bowlby is. The top speed at such low horsepower is amazing. I do feel that the triangle footprint does poses danger during side collision. It seems to like to flip over too easily comparing to its CoG(yes, i know the car is very light too). Probably when the car is tilted, rather than just being thrown sideways or direct lateral force between the two, it has a tendency to tilt forward as well like a kid falling on his bike with support wheels, the outer wheel steer or toe-in towards the collision force forcing the car against the impact and pushing it upwards and over.

:cool:
