This might be interesting from the aero perspective.... for 2013 NASCAR is allowing/encouraging a lot more production styling cues, brand identity, etc and so on, in the hope of placating the OEs, who would like to see more production flavor in the cars. In recent years, except for the header panels and quarter window outlines, the bodywork on all the makes has been essentially identical. You can find more variation among different teams or different track configurations than among different brands.

Anyway, in a couple of long discussions with Darby, I found that NASCAR is very confident that, via tunnel and CFD, they've learned enough about the basic profile and proportions of the Cup car to control them and give everything else, surface development etc, back to the automakers to mess with. Check out the cars in the slide show gallery. They're still nothing like stock, obviously, but at least they are developing some differentiation.

Isn't that Ricky Stenhouse that Hornish is following there?

IIRC Stenhouse had rear-exiting tailpipes. Any information on how that went as far as cooling for the car behind?

This will amuse the many NASCAR detractors. In Sprint Cup the cars are indeed regulated right down to the size and style of the door number and the signage and decal placement. Here are the changes for 2013 to go with the new, more stock-ish bodywork. The most noticeable change, perhaps, is the addition of a windshield banner displaying the driver's name... ala your various spec car driver invitational series, hmm.

They really, really should move the numbers to the rear quarter panel and let the sponsors have the door. It's a better use of space for both.

They could just do away with the door numbers, forcing the broadcasting talent to identify the cars solely by their sponsor names. "Look, Darrell, the Menard's just ran over the Lowe's. That'll be a fun weekend fixup project fer surely."

For the same reason, I have also advocated that drivers legally change their names to the sponsor's brand. For example, Jeff Gordon would become Pepsi Jeff Pepsi Gordon Pepsi. If you can sell the naming rights to a track you ought to be able to sell the naming rights to a person. People have to eat too.

There was a guy in the BTCC that changed his name to John B&Q, after the hardware retailer.

And here's how they do it in the NASCAR Mexico series

Recap of the two-day test session at Charlotte this week with lots of cool photos:

The cars are already at 2012 speeds, so track records are expected to fall next year.

Is Burton running in primer or something?

And given the cars are metal, when they run in 'testing black' is that just paint? It's certainly not unpainted composites.

It's generally just gray or black sanding primer. Many of the cars were sporting gloss paint this year in monotone "test schemes," if you will.

I chose that photo of Burton because it nicely shows all the features molded into the Chevy SS header panel. Considerably more detail than in past years.

EDIT: And if you shoot a little clear over the primer, it won't show every streak and fingerprint and you can wipe it off.

Ok then, for those who are curious, here is a brief historical review and large photo gallery on the NASCAR convertible era. Interesting cars, in my view anyway.

Speaking of NASCAR aero, here a brief story on Junior Johnson's ’66 Ford Galaxie, aka the "Yellow Banana." For being all cheated up, it's right there with Smokey Yunick's '66 Chevelle. It makes me giggle just to look at it.

After updating the original 2013 Spotter’s Guide (Jan. 10) multiple times, finally decided we might as well do a complete new edition, moving the story to the top of the feature queue. What with things be cranking up at Daytona next week and all, etc. The few remaining car liveries that are not included yet will be added as they arrive. LINK:

Counting down the Daytona 500, today it's 15, favored number of two team owners, Bill Stroppe and Bud Moore.
