If they're both gentlemen there's only an honourable solution:

Why can't they just keep their own helmets?

Good question.

Those look like rears ... not helmets

Looks like JP's famous arse-hat.

I'm pretty sure they have different shades of Yellow and they can be easily differentiated between. I don't see the problem at all.

When I was a boy my mum told me all helmets look the same anyway.

I can't wait to see this thread explode at the official team launch.

Whether they keep their colours or one or the other is "forced" to change, it'll be very entertaining round here.

Never liked Rosberg's design, so if one of them really has to change I hope it's him.

It's not the color that I don't like though, more the spiky thing with rough edges going on on the sides.

Seriously though:

They have different details too. Nico's has a grey band around the bottom and Lewis' has the Grenadan flag details on the side. If the keep the sponsor bands different too it's a non issue if the shade of yellow difference isn't enough already.

They can. And I think they will. T-cam will be quite ok. If not, the FIA should find a solution instad of forcing anybody to change Helmet designs. I hope they keep it.

You're going to see them mainly head on though, so yellows with the same sponsor decals. The two cars together will be easy to tell apart but when you just see the one you'll have to look a little closer until you figure it out.

I know that. But Helmet design was never necessarily about on-track identification. It is a very personal, and basically the only personal apparel the driver has freedom on. Trying to make it look like a necessity to change a helmet design just because it is not visual enough for some fans is not right. If any of them decide to go for a different design, I don't care. But it is really not necessary. NR seems to have already been put down as the clear No. 2 at Mercedes by most of the LH fans here. To say the least, so far the noises from Mercedes themselves seem to enforce this belief too. I don't think he should change his Helmet design if he does not want to, period. There has to be a solution to make teammates distinguishable on track that does not include helmet design and colour. So no, I sincerely hope they do not change, at least as long as they do not want to.

I was responding to the post about the helmets being different enough so spot, but the problem is we won't see them from the side very often.

But I don't care. It's such a minor thing and you'll just get used to looking at the camera color.

Rosberg needs to chance his colors. Asking Lewis to give up his iconic yellow helmet would be stupid. And as the photo above shows, Lewis is using a yellow helmet way longer than Nico. Nico can go pink.

"Iconic"? lol. Surely he would have to be an icon first?

And if his lack of icon status makes no difference, why is it not Nico's "iconic" yellow helmet that should stay?

It's iconic because he's a top driver with lots of exposure. It makes the design an icon. Nico is not an iconic because he hasn't achieved anything substantial. Being the first black f1 world champion and f1 great is iconic.

Not really, if he changed his helmet as much as Vettel for instance, his design wouldn't be iconic at all.

Yeah because he is black that makes his achievements more iconic. Until now he is one time world champion. Nothing iconic in my eyes. 5 others drivers on the grid have one title or more..

yellow.

Motorsport-Total asked Rosberg about that.

Question: You both have yellow helmets. Is anybody going to change that for next year?
Rosberg: Not me! I don't know what he's doing, but I stick with yellow.

Nothing. Why should either of them change his helmet design?

To make the lives of commentators, arm chair fans and basically everyone else following the two on TV easier.

We've honestly had teammates with similar helmets in the past. Why does it have to be an issue now all of a sudden just because Hamilton is involved?

Can you, with a glance, tell who is who?

Easy.

How about now?

Now it's a bit harder, don't you think?

For the sake of avoiding confusion, one of them should change helmet colors IMO.

it's easy, they even put a red strip on the airbox to make it easier. they could to that this year, extending the T-cam colours to the airbox.

Yes, I can tell in both cases.

What confusion? If there is confusion, and the T-cam is not enough for some people, that is up to the FIA to resolve it, without touching the helmets. The problem here is highlighted by your choice of words: No driver should change the design or color of his helmet if he/she does not want to.. It is, I say again, the ONLY piece of apparel that he/she has total freedom on, it is personal, Maybe you should send LH a letter, and ask him nicely to change his colors.

Nico's is light yellow with light grey whereas Lewis is stronger yellow with colorful bits in green, red and blue. may be confusing under some curcumstances but I guess it'll be mostly fine.

To appease confused fans of course. ;) Nevermind that most drivers can now be identified by the T-Bar colour.

Why are we still having this discussion? There are clear differences in Nico's and Lewis' helmet. Lewis has distinct green and red accents and also a very different colour visor to Nico's.

I see someone posted an image of Schumi and Rosberg with both yellow helmets. I can easilly tell the difference there at a first glance.

Refuse to acknowledge a T-cam? For what reason? You have the T-cam and the fact that Rosberg's Merc badge has a black background.

It's a bit annoying but to be honest anyone claiming this makes it harder to tell which car is which or something...I'm sorry but if you can't instantly tell which car it is from its position on the track/race, you're not paying close enough attention to the race.

Nico didn't give up his yellow helmet. Such a surprise, not. He did give up his yellow T-cam however. Or let's just say, other than Michael, Lewis didn't fight for it by claiming he prefers an uneven number and thereby demanding the number 9 car. That was always a quite interesting story, perhaps Nico just put his foot down now. So Lewis will be all yellow and Rosberg will be red/yellow. Won't trouble me either way.

The reason why Schumacher changed his helmet changed in early '00's is because backmarkers couldn't tell the difference between him and Barrichello. Both had the blue top and partly white sides. From the cockpit of a car you can't see the T-cam color in the mirrors. The only thing you might see when you are bouncing 300+ down the straight is the color of the helmet. The nosecones are flat nowadays, so no glance at the starting number or markings there.

What a ridiculous reason to change helmet design. They'll do what they want.

If a viewer can't tell the two apart on the track he/she should try harder or keep quiet.

What a disaster. Hopefully either o them will have a colourful monkey seat at the top of the airbox so that I don't need to squint at my telly for 2-5 seconds to figure out whether it's Lewis or Rosberg I'm looking at.
