I just wanted to let you know that I have negotiated a 24 minute version of my 'Grand Prix Icon : Lotus 72' video to air on Motors TV across Europe in December. When I get some more specific details I'll let you know. The programme features newly-shot interviews with John Miles, Emerson Fittipaldi and the late Peter Warr and is introducued by motor racing historian Michael Oliver. It also features a host of previously un-published photographs and un-seen movie film.

Well done Gary! The culmination of many years of work. Did this all happen quickly? There was no mention of it when we went for a beer on Thursday...

Absolutely Alan. Received an e-mail from Motors yesterday at about 2 o'clock! Although I'd been waiting on a reply from them for about six weeks or so..........

This sounds like the sort of thing that BBC4 should also pick up.

They do have a track record (if you excuse the pun) of motorsport documentaries.

So one on the technical aspects, as well as the people would be great - notwithstanding the excellent Gordon Murray one from a few months back.

Perhaps MSP could badge it as one of theirs, as they do have the connections ??

FYI Roger, I tried (in this order) Sky F1, Motors, BBC and ESPN. None of them wanted it. I have since managed to sweet talk Motors!

Whoops, sorry about that - in hindsight I guess you would have done that - I didnt mean to sound patronising.

Shame you've had so little interest in the DVD, but well done on MotorsTV

Last word from me on this, with the cinema release of Ron Howards 'Rush' due next year (Probably Summer 2013) there may well be renewed interest in classic F1 machines.

Perhaps @realronhoward could include as an extra on the DVD release ??

Or if any cinemas have a showing for petrolheads, they could include as a 'B' feature before the main film ?

................I don't think you realise that the DVD version is going to be at least 90 minutes long with as much as another 60 minutes of 'extras'.

There are a few Saffers active on this forum, and you will certainly have a lot of interest in the '72 in ZA, there were a couple of them that were active in our F1 series of course.

Yes, Barry, I think two, maybe 3, chassis were repatriated from South Africa back to the UK, one of which has not been seen since!
If only I could get hold of that for the programme.........what a time capsule that would be.

Have you spoken with VelocityTV in the US? They are a competitor to Speed but NOT dominated by NASCAR and muscle cars. VTV already shows "Wheeler Dealers" from the UK and has more programming focused on classic US and European Cars. Worth a try?

Best, Ross

I believe all three ex-ZA 72s came back to the UK, the third in the ownership of a secretive collector (who as far as I know has no interests at Biggin Hill)

quite correct, David. Biggin Hill, 'Bernie' as we shall call him, as far as I'm aware, doesn't have ANY Lotus hardware at all!

Have just heard that the first transmission of the 'tv version' of the Lotus 72 video will transmit on Motors TV across Europe at 13.10 on Tuesday the 27th of November. It will be repeated at 19:25 the same day, then at 23:05 on the 29th and also at 20.30 on Friday 30th November.
It will probably get more repeats through December.

Tell all your friends!

I was there when Ch 6 & 7 were alongside each other just out of a sea container in a delapidated state still in faded Gunston colours, unused for a decade with blown up engines, in a garden near Maidstone in 1984

Yes, very good - every word Peter Warr said was revealing. And it's on again tonight at 19.25.

Freddie was an old gentlemen who I bought a lot of motor racing home movies from. I used some in the programme ; the pitlane shots of Chunky & Emerson in the car, plus the head & shoulders shots of PEW, Emo & Ronnie in a conflab were all his.

'every word Peter Warr said was revealing.' Thank you.
As an aside, when I approached the Head of F1 at Sky TV with the programme, (I showed him a 5 min clip) his ONE comment was 'The interviews are crap but the old film is good.'
Shows you how much he knows..............

With regard to this ancient thread...

..it is interesting that Peter Warr said that Team Lotus started paying for their DFVs in 1969.

a very brief update; today I've filmed an interview with Gold Leaf Team Lotus mechanic Doug Garner (Lotus Indy Team in 1968, then onto the F1 team up to the middle of 71) for the Lotus 72 documentary.

In this pic he checks a couple of dates in 'the bible'.
