An escaped convict, former dirt track champion Emmerich Brillmann of Austria, fooled race officials and Austrian police and entered a speedway event held at the Amstetten Speedway, under the assumed name of Alfred Klima.

He displayed such skill in practice at the Amstetten dirt oval, 50 kms west of Wien, Austria, that some experts rated him as a real new ace. But during qualifying session on Sunday, 06 September 1959, while leading the time list, he lost control of his motorcycle that crashed hard into a fence, killing him almost instantly.

Documents found on Alfred Klima's body, identified him as Emmerich Brillmann, an accomplished speedway rider who had won in previous years an Austrian title in the 250 cm3 class. He had served prison terms and after his last brush with the law, he was sent to a jail in June of 1959. He broke out and had been in the police's wanted list, ever since.

Emmerich Brillmann, 28, started his career in the mid-1950s as a sidecar passenger to fellow rider Josef Walla, competing on a Jap 500 outfit, and later continued a successful solo career.
