My guess is lack of a Cossie engine. And that Renault already supplies 4 teams, which leaves one Merc andone Ferrari for Marussia & HRT.

As usual, the sillyness of the silly season will be determined on how many drivers in top cars call it a day. This year we had Schumacher. Next year, Massa, Webber and Kimi are candidates.

The Vettel -> Ferrari rumours will stay alive until he will finally join the reds - whenever that will be.

Massa maybe I guess if he decides he wants to end his career on a relative high note, can't see Kimi retiring again for a while though. Webber seems likely though yeah.

Ehr, this forum, actually.

But seriously, it's my bad. The engine suppliers should be blue.

Oh nothing much. I just thought that perhaps either No. 3 or 4 would have been more accurate.

With #1 going to whom?

I'm just teasing. I remember for 2010 picking Kubica with #1, which got us off to a good start. It's just my guess (or perhaps wish), and often I change the #1 position according to WDC positions in the previous season, i.e. 2013.

Eh? Alonso leaving his monstrous Ferrari contract three years ahead of time for a team not keen on high salaries? Not gonna happen. Porsche and Honda won't be there for 2014 either.

All depends on whether Vettel moves really. At the moment I've changed my mind and don't think he will anymore, and that makes the situation up top rather boring. However I expect a lot movement down in the midfield, with Sauber and Force India's sources of income unknown, and Webber possible lateral movement to Ferrari as a stopgap.

Ferrari: Alonso / Webber

This Webber move won't happen if Massa retains the performance of the past few races, but I think that's temporary and Ferrari's patience with him will eventually run out.

Red Bull: Vettel / Raikkonen

Kimi's an obvious lead candidate for Red Bull regardless of whether they need to replace Seb or Mark, although for the #2 slot they may look internally at their promising young guns.

McLaren: Button / Pérez

I've got a bad feeling Pérez will underperform but I think they'll give him a 2nd year Kovalainen-style. Button sure isn't moving anywhere now he's leading a top team.

Mercedes: Hamilton / Rosberg

Little chance anything will happen here with one of the strongest lineups in F1.

Lotus: Massa / di Resta

Revolution here if Kimi is out. Sadly I think Romain's crashes will forever haunt him and Lotus patience with him will end. Massa is hired for his unvaluable recent Ferrari knowledge, but given recent underperformance they need a quick and reliable guy, so here comes Paul desperate to get out of FI's sinking ship.

Sauber: Hulkenberg / Pic

Hulk's not been confirmed yet but I think he's the next lead Sauber driver and will remain so until a better opening shows up. He could move to Lotus sure, but I'm not sure he'll want to make a slightly lateral move yet again. Sauber on a rise over the last couple seasons are certainly able to attract the better paydrivers (both in terms of money and pace) so Pic is logical.

Williams: Bottas / Maldonado

Williams can't afford to lose Pastor's big bucks and will do their best to retain him, crashes or not. But by then Bottas should be their lead driver.

Force India: Alguersuari / Frijns

Big question marks over this team who eventually may even get a new owner, but I'm out of ideas as tho who would that be. Jaime is rumoured for 2013 and should bring some sponsorship, probably will remain there. Frijns I suppose someone eventually will pick him up, my wild guess is Mercedes who loan him out to FI.

Toro Rosso: da Costa / Vergne

Dan and JEV cancel each other's chance to a #2 Red Bull seat, and eventually Dan gets booted harshly to bring him AFdC. Dan is looked at by many teams but eventually suffers from not bringing in cash.

Caterham: Kovalainen / Gutierrez

Kova isn't showing good enough form to move up again, but Caterham like him. Carlos Slim and Telmex already have one big investment in Pérez, so resort to buying only a backmarker seat for Gutierrez who they still have a hint of faith on.

Marussia: Petrov / Chilton

Chilton is rumoured for '13 already and brings in the pounds to pay the bills. There has to be a Russian on the grid for the Russian GP and he finds sponsorship too thanks to the fact it's a Russian team. He's deemed experienced enough to lead the team so sadly Glock's career comes to an end.

HRT: Clos / Senna

Tough to guess as effectively seats go to the highest bidders, I don't think they'll still be employing an ancient Pedro to drive by 2014. Senna back would be awkward but he'd be the "experienced" guy, with the bonus of cash.

Regarding Ferrari and 2014 I believe that if it isn't Vettel, then the #2 choice is Hulkenberg. Of course unless Massa puts in a great season and Hulk not-so-great.

Webber @Ferrari? Sorry, no way. He will turn 38 in 2014 already and he is not that much of an improvement over Massa either, being pretty inconsistent.

McLaren and Mercedes stay as they are. Lotus is the questionmark, but there is no reason to change Kimi-Romain line-up as long as they keep performing and as long as the team keeps performing. Though you never know, F1 changes quickly.

Of course, the other big question is about Red Bull. If Vettel leaves, I believe Webber will get one more 1-year-contract. With perhaps Ricciardo alongside him. If Vettel stays, I still believe an STR youngster will be alongside him and Webber will not be retained. If RBR with all its data realizes that neither Ricciardo nor Vergne are good enough for the RBR ride (like the concluded with Alguersuari and Buemi), they will get someone from the outside - perhaps di Resta, Hulk (if there isn't opening in Ferrari) or even Kimi/Grosjean (if Lotus' performance drops, if Romain improves his racecraft a lot in 2013).

He would have turned 37 in 2013.....

Webber does what Ferrari wants - he scores, consistently. And he's fast enough to push the designated Number 1, but not beat him up. Webber will remain employed as an F1 driver as long as he continues to remain at the level he's at.

Webber was considered by Ferrari only because Massa was truly horrible at the time and none of the younger drivers (incl Hulkenberg) was deemed impressive/consistent enough. But this situation has changed. Nothing is constant in F1, neither is Ferrari's interest in the ever-aging Webber. And even then Webber was probably considered as a 1-year stop-gap. From 2014 onwards Ferrari is looking for a long-term solution anyway.

Even though they effectively said the same thing, right? That Vettel is not — NOT — joining Ferrari in 2014.

Dr. Marko hasn't really say that Vettel is NOT going to joing Ferrari in 2014. I am reading it as RBR has a contractual lock on Vettel in 2014, however, and I hope he knows that, if the driver decides to move on, contract or not, there is no point to make him drive for you, and you might just as well throw hands up, and give up. I also do not think that RBR would make Vettel to take a gradening leave, thus I think if there is a will, he would relocate. Next good question of course is, why he would do that, unless he really likes horses painted on his car.

It makes sense because we know that Ferrari has been interested two years running now, and at least one of those years Mark was interested enough to keep the talks going quite a while.

Having said that, though, I do agree with your assessment. Just think that "zero sense" is too extreme, because there is a (admittedly small) possibility that the two parties could come together. That chance increases markedly if the following happens: 1. Mark decides he wants to race in 2014; 2. RBR decide they don't want Mark for 2014; 3. Massa has a rubbish year again; 4. Ferrari stick with their policy of not hiring in rookies.

I think based on the last couple of years worth of rumours and partial confirmations of said rumours, that it's become clear that the top of Ferrari's list for their #2 seat has been Webber. He's just not been available to them. If Mark wants to stay in F1 but finds the RBR door closed, he may well find the Ferrari door is open.

Caterham has a deal to produce the new line of Alpine car models with Renault. Unless something odd happens Caterham will remain a Renault team.
But I am expecting a rebrand to Alpine Caterham in the near future.

According to Toto Wolff, Bottas is on a long-term deal with Williams, so we can assume he is under contract for 2014, can't we?

"What is important for us is that we have long-term, multiple-year deals with both drivers to have stability for the team," Wolff said.

Here's my prediction for the 2014 grid:

Red Bull
Sebastian Vettel
Daniel Ricciardo

Ferrari
Fernando Alonso
Nico Hulkenberg

McLaren
Jenson Button
Sergio Perez

Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton
Nico Rosberg

Lotus
Kimi Raikkonen
Charles Pic

Sauber
Esteban Gutierrez
Robert Frijns

Williams
Pastor Maldonado
Valteri Bottas

Toro Rosso
Jean Eric Vergne
Antonio Felix da Costa

Force India
Jaime Alguesuari
Jules Bianchi

Caterham
Giedo Van Der Garde
James Calado

Marussia
Max Chilton
Vitaly Petrov

I think that Vettel will eventually join Ferrari, but I expect him to stay at Red Bull for 2014 at least, with Webber retiring and being replaced by Ricciardo. Even though Massa has done well recently, I have a feeling that next year will be his last and Nico Hulkneberg will get a chance at Ferrari. I expect Perez to get at least two years at McLaren unless he really sucks next year and I wouldn't be surprised if Lotus go for Pic as that would help keep Total happy.

Means little, ask Petrov or Trulli.

Going to make a prediction about Ferrari. If Bianchi gets the second seat at Force India next year and performs well, I see him alongside Alonso in 2014 and not Hulkenberg. All the previous talk of him being faster than Perez in the simulator, if it was true, which seems to suggest they still value him highly although he didn't win GP2 or WSR titles.

Take a look on internal context of the team.

French engine, partly french manufacturer with Alpine, French sponsors , french team principal.

Red Bull

Antonio Felix da Costa
(...)
Toro Rosso
Daniel Ricciardo or Jean Eric Vergne
Carlos Sainz Jr.

Do you honestly believe da Costa will go straight to RBR without having a full season with STR before, and at the same time Red Bull will keep Ricciardo/Vergne in STR despite rating him low enough to give a Red Bull seat to the rookie before him?

I can't see how Red Bull would take a rookie to the championship-fighting team. Even if he turns out to be good. Vettel needed to make 1,5 year at STR before he has got a Red Bull seat.
