Impossible to tell ... I mean how tied to Alonso is the Santander thing, and how much money does it bring?

and before crazy people start acting crazy, I am answering a question about how much sponsoring drivers have, not suggesting Alonso is a pay driver. A similar thing could apply to Kimi if rumors that shell is paying the 20million bill to cover Kimi's wages are true

Grosjean? Total backing is no small for sure.

Rich people problems eh? Financially midfield teams are now in shambles and Maldonado is the golden goose. This is terrible news for Hulkenberg, Sutil and other patiently awaiting drivers. When the music stops some driver's won't have time to react in finding a seat. Right now it looks like Perez and Maldonado are the only ones guaranteed to be on the grid next year.

Sorry though I may be wrong buy doesn't Sutil also carry some form of sponsorship(s). He's also a pay driver, just not a heavy one nor a good one either. I think it's nice to support those without big money but why does that make them any less credible drivers. Pastor though a hot headed fool, did win a race and the rest of that season showed his speed; similar to Grosjean. In-fact if he does land that seat in Lotus and the outfit stays as strong as it is now then it will truly be a test of Pay -/- Talent as these two are very similar in styles and speed. Perez also is very talented, I think it's hardly fair to compare his performance this year with Button when so many things were just not in his favour. The only driver I think that even deserves a credible high end seat on skill and merit alone is Hulkenberg and I think he will retain the seat because of that aspect. The Force India boys are good they just haven't sparked...

Brazilian media puts Sutil and Nasr at Sauber next year.

Gutierrez to Marussia or out of F1.

Sirotkin 3rd driver.

Nasr brings 15M. Announcement should be made next week.

correct me if I'm wrong, but

- if Marussia and Sauber merge

and

- if Caterham and Lotus merge

than I see 9 teams, or 18 cars. Does this mean the obligatory clause in the concorde agreements about three car teams kicks in?

- Red Bull

- Mercedes

- Ferrari

- Lotus

- McLaren

- Force India

- Sauber

- Toro Rosso

- Williams

This is close to what is being rumoured for the Eight-3 system. Caterham would merge with Lotus, Marussia with Williams (or so Dieter Rencken's article says) and Toro Rosso would be absorbed into Red Bull.

From the article:

The rumour mill links Marussia to Williams, while Caterham is believed to have held merger discussions with Lotus plus AN Other (or even two), and a source suggests the first announcement could be made as early as next week.

Two (potentially) down; one to go, and here Toro Rosso is the prime candidate, for the team was acquired by Red Bull as technical and sporting nursery for its main operation, and under the three-car system costs are spread over a larger base while enabling teams to accommodate rookies. Thus no real need for STR.

Well, there you go then.

Maldonado and Perez at Force India. Dream team for dosh.

And VJ could finally pay some of his redundant airline stewardesses to give the boys a pre-race pampering.

It's clear no-one really wants to go to Lotus, not even Maldonado, so I expect Suzie Wolff to go there in a deal that involves some used Mercedes engines. Better than none!

There's a difference between a company saying "sign that driver and we'll follow him to you with our chequebook" and a long time sponsor saying "we'd like that driver, sign him and we'll pay him. If not, you'll still get your normal money from us".

Hmmm, the rumour mill is now churning out that Maldonado might bring another sponsor along with PDVSA, apparently a private company.

So you want to tell me that Lotus fought with Lotus (but not the Lotus) for the Lotus name, and in the end they will merge to be more Lotus than Lotus, but less than the Lotus?

If that's not absurd enough, imagine they'd ditch the Lotus name and run as Caterham.

If it goes through, given the Genii thing, they should call themselves Loti.

why not put everything in there like:

Proton Loti Lotus Caterham Renault F1 Benetton Triple WDC Team Mansoor Genii - Quantum

Once again, being a bit serious here, I find it amazing that Lotus merging with Caterham would fix their financial status. And I find it even more amazing that they would do that, with the guys that they fought with, for the name. Though best bit in that is: Caterham seems to be in better financial situation than Lotus (Oh you silly Genii). Team nr 11 better than Team nr 4.

Whats with all this team merging?

Can't we just have 11 teams? The only reason is then the big teams who have the resources can once again dominate. I would go with this idea.

That would be a wonderful end to the Lotus saga.

But seriously, teams merging to produce three car squads will be an awful for F1.

Di Resta (likely) losing his seat is similar to Sutil and Alguersuari in 2011. All drivers had just had their best season in F1 and beaten their team-mates, yet it wasn't enough to retain their seats, while previously with lesser performance they had managed to stay on.

It completely doesn't make sense for a team to merge with a team that is in heavy debt. Merging 2 teams with not much cash and no (or not much) debt makes sense, but not merging with a team that is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Working on a 2013 car while investing heavily in 2014 has put team on the verge of imminent collapse. You only have to look at the vast resources Mercedes have had to their disposal for working on two cars at the same time. The wealth gap is simply huge, like your neighbour being able to afford a mansion and a vacation home while you can just make rent for your semi-detached.

With mergers there is always the possibility that the teams would become separate entities again. i.e Wolf/Williams, who achieved nothing together, but were considerably better off when they went their own ways. Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better, and F1 is no exception...

You're out of step. Bernie likes the idea of merging.

You see, circuits could merge too. The Grand Prix of France, Germany and Great Britain could all be held somewhere central, like Belgium for example. They just do it on different weekends with different flags waving. Who cares anyway if you're watching on TV.

The really neat idea is to merge drivers too. I think Rosberg could merge with Button quite easily. It will just be a guy in merged helmet design a few gnats behind Lewis.

All this will dramatically reduce the cost to teams.

Of course, Bernie would have to treble his fees to make up the lost revenue from three car teams, fewer entries, circuits etc. But I don't think anyone would have a problem with that, would they?

It's happened before.  Scuderia Italia (1988-1993), for instance, was merged into Minardi from 1994 onwards.

If any two teams should merge, it should be Caterham and Marussia. If either one merge with a team up the food ladder, the one other will be left as a backmarker without a rival which would be bad for the sport. You want teams to be in clusters of packs without any one dominating or being too far behind everyone else.

This mergers story keeps getting weirder.  If--and this is a big if--F1 implements 3-car teams after the Marussia/Sauber & Lotus/Caterham mergers go through, and STR gets folded into Red Bull, who would the drivers be?

My wild guesses:

Red Bull

Vettel

Riccardo

Kyvat

Mercedes

Hamilton

Rosberg

Bird

Ferrari

Alonso

Raikkonen

Bianchi

Lotus/Caterham

Grosjean

Hulkenberg

van der Garde

Mclaren

Button

Magnussen

Vandoorne

Force India

Sutil

di Resta

Perez

Sauber/Marussia

Maldonado

Frijins

Chilton

Williams

Massa

Bottas

Ericsson

Chilton tried in Monaco. Maldonado didn't like it and tried to get wings but he forgot he wasn't driving a Red Bull.
