Weren't the Ladas in production in the late sixties?

After all, the theme of Russia paying Fiat for a factory was the basis for The Italian Job, was it not?

And how about the Niva?

A shame that Checker is out of the building business, of course.

Wikipedia says:
The FIAT 124 licence production was the Lada 2101 build from 1970 - '88.
The Lada 2105/Nova/Riva was the replacement that was build since 1979. It's appearently still in production in Egypt.

The Lada Niva is in production since 1976.
If you want to buy a classic car fresh from the production line...that's the one!

May I nominate the Lotus Seven - in production since 1957 and unlike Corvettes and Corollas still very much recognisable - the 2012 model may have a lot more power compared to ACBC original but all the essentials are there. It may have been called Caterham since 1973 but few owners doubt the Chapman DNA and given Lotus ' current predicament who knows what may happen in future? Mine has a Lotus key ring anyway....

('All the esentials are there....' ?) Well yes, except for different chassis, different rear suspension, different front suspension, different wheels, different engines, different gearboxes, different body materials .... plus a different name (Caterham instead of Lotus) and several different company owners.

Otherwise almost exactly the same as originally.

No, but I wish ....

[And, BTW, substitute the phrase 'works Escort rally car' for 'Lotus 7' and the same caveat applies ....]

As I said- all the essentials...the Seven is far more of an evolution of the original than cars like the Corolla and Corvette ; and different company owners are immaterial - you're not telling me that Chevy shareholders are the same as in the 50s? Look at my 2007 Seven and a Prisoner era Seven - or earlier -and to the viewer they look essentially the same machine. And with a better motor sport heritage than any other car over that period too perhaps ?
