Also, I have doubts we had the fastest car.

Seriously? You need to watch the whole season again because over the course of the year McLaren was easily the fastest car. McLaren dropped the ball massively, or since you used the royal "we" I could say you dropped the ball massively. ;)

Even though the car was fastest, the speed of the car is not the main criteria of the success. Beside speed, there are also such factors as reliability (worst in top 3), work on command bridge (worst in top 3), lucky (worst in top 3). Also, I have doubts we had the fastest car.

The car was the fastest but the team work was also among the worst.

Interesting article.

Mclaren had the fastest car this season, ahead of Red Bull; then Lotus and then Ferrari.
http://www.f1fanatic...ar-performance/

So. The car with the fastest car was beaten by the car with the 4th fastest car in both the drivers and constructors championships. Impressive.

I didn't know it was possible to under perform that much. Purely based on the pace of the cars; this season has been Mclaren's to lose, and they have managed to do that, spectacularly.

McLaren +Hamilton was the fastes combination.
McLaren + Button was the 5th best combination.

If only we had somewhere to post Hamilton/Button comments...

Indeed. Teamwork certainly wasn't the best and neither was reliability. To finish first, first you have to finish...

But if you can only have one thing I guess a fast fragile car is better than a slow reliable one. You'd think it'd be easier to make a fast car reliable. Here's to next year!

Hamilton's Mcalren was the fastest car this season. He could have had 9 pole positions and won 11 races with it.

McLaren had in no way the fastest car over the entire season. It was the quickest in the final two races and the period after the summer break. Apart from that, the Red Bull's were much quicker in the Asian races, and the early part of the season where it switched between them, McLaren, Ferrari, and whoever managed to get their tyres working on the day. A few races were thrown away by reliability and pit mistakes, but it's not like we had an absolutely dominant car.

Ok. Then which car would you say was the fastest of 2012?

Red Bull over the course of the season. They were either fastest or just behind the lead car in almost every race this year. The MP4-28 was never that consistent, especially in the first half of the season.

The MP4-28 hasn't turned a wheel yet.;)

Mac had the fastest car in oz(win), mal(pitstop errors), spain(strategy errors), can(win), hun(win), bel(win), ita(win), sing(tranny fail while leading), abu(fuel pump fail while leading), us(win), and brazil(win).
RBR had the fastest car in bah(win), mon(win), eur(alternator fail while leading), eng(win), jap(win), kor(win), and india(win).

Mac also had a better car than RBR in China(fastest car behind the Mercs, Pirelli) and Germany(Lewis puncture, fastest car on track, Jenson second to Nando).

Rebull faster in the bolded. Definitely. Race pace shows which car is faster. RBR race-pace was much better in those 5. For Hungary it was the nature of the track why the pole starting Mac could stay ahead.

Despite that I still say Mclaren had the fastest car when we add weight to potential finishing positions. What I mean is when the Mclaren was out front everybody else were bunched up. And when the RedBull was out front it was only Mclaren and Ferrari trailing behind. So Mclaren should have scored more when they had the advantage.

Hmmm ok,

Hungary, pole and win for Lewis.
Singapore, pole and retirement from the lead for Lewis.
Abu, pole and retirement from the lead for Lewis.
US, was close and Lewis and Seb were the class of the field, this is the only one where no advantage could be argued. Regardless, Lewis won.
Brazil, Front row lockout for McLaren, Jenson win and Lewis taken out by Hulkenberg while leading.

Please explain how RBR were faster?

You have just to watch these race, not only the result, especially the Hungary race.

Then I dont know what exactly you have watched. Mclaren was quicker in Sing., Abu Dhabi, Austin and Brasil unless you consider both Lewis and JB as much quicker drivers than both Vettel and Webber.

I seriously can't believe people are having this discussion.

Herp, derp, Mclaren was fastest in Abu Dhabi ... but then it broke.

Herp, derp, it was fastest in Singapore ... oh, look it broke.

Derping along in Brazil ... they have a Hulk(enberg)

Barcelona for the win ... lol, no fuel.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that having the fastest car means absolutely zero when you can't finish the race.

Whatā€™s the matter? I can remember we had next yearā€™s car thread around October or November and there were some speculations for the past four years about the cars and how they will be. But it pans out that all the people have made their minds to keep quiet. I like when McLaren are silent and donā€™t start to upper our expectations.
I know that the regulations are more or less the same for the next year but they must bring some innovations.

By the way Iā€™ve just noticed the sticky topic about the 2013 cars.

Well i think were all expecting an evolution of this years car but with pullrod front suspension, raised front bulkhead, and maybe a steeper coanda effect (red bull escque), i think the rear end could be tidied up around the suspension, red bull put their drive shaft in a covered suspension arm, very clean. I think the only confirmed things are the pull ro front and raised bulkhead though, which in itself should give us more underbody downforce as we were losing out there all year compared to other cars

Lowe said during the year that McLaren will more than likely use a front pullrod, and they have been testing since Monaco the step in the nose so its more than likely they wil have a step in the nose/raised bulkhead

Where did Lowe say this? All I recall reading were rumours from an (Italian?) media outlet.

If I remember correctly it was midseason, I wouldn't just go off and talk fairy tales if I didn't read it, so don't think I'm just starting rumours cos I am not. I am certain that I read that McLaren are adopting front pull rod for next season and Lowe had something to do with the story. Of the front bulkhead I think its obvious McLaren are going that route.

Never said you were spreading rumours Bartel, so apologies if it sounded like that. I just thought you may have been mistaken. I remember reading about it at the time and it was just rumour, there was no mention of Lowe saying it would appear on there 2013 challenger in the article I read. I also believe it is pretty unusual for a technical director to disseminate a teams development path for the following year.

Yes Lowe sad something about pull rod, but the word sad that McLaren "are looking into this solution for quite some time" not that they will use it in 2013... that`s why Marca came with the headline "McLaren considers Ferrari pull-rod front suspention for 2013 car" and then everyone repeated that story. ;)

I remember in Korea we heard strange sounds from the Mercedes/Exhaust units on the McLaren cars. The rasping/misfire type sounds were most prevalent when on throttle from low speed and sounded a little similar to traction control. The effect appeared to have been drop at subsequent round or two. Was there any analysis of this particularly from the more technically inclined websites?

Other than the fact that it is apparently normal to have engine maps that only fire 4 out of 8 cylinders to avoid overwhelming the tyres in low gears, and then having to do some trickery like playing with the ignition timing and pre-wetting the cylinders when the gearing becomes longer and the engine begins to fire on all 8 cylinders, no, not that I know of. I would certainly expect something like this to affect the exhaust note and the general sound characteristics of the engine?

Well mates. Since finish 2012 season, i was busy with my job.

I hope 2013 be a great season for us "28".

I think with Lewis out, we will havenĀ“t a superclass driver, but i hope the car be another year the best, even in reliability....

I wish the best for each of us, for this new 2013.

Happy new year and Carry on!!!!!

Keep The Faith !!

Surely that deserves a thread for the MP4-28. Or is the MP4-28 not allowed it's own thread.

Normally have previews before pre-season testing - which tends to lead to people speculating on a livery change which fails to materialise.

Likely to ship mid to late February.
