Abu Dhabi now looks to be a very interesting race with championship leader Vettel starting from the pit lane due to a fueling infraction.

Can Alonso take advantage to reclaim the points lead?

How far up the grid can Vettel go?

Will Massa play a role to hold Vettel out of the points?

Pay attention, interesting race ahead!

I think alonso will do well to even cancel out the lead to be honest. I don't think vettel's penalty is really going to alter the final destination of the driver's title

Nope. There could be an interesting result to close the points gap between the top two, but that doesn't mean we're going to get a corker around this car park best characterised by the phallic hotel it's built around.

Like someone said elsewhere, a common enemy can turn former foes into friends.

However, I think the WDC is Vettel's to lose. RBR has proven again that they are the best. Lest Ferrari magically pull a rabbit out of the hat and make the F2012 a lot faster, no amount of tenacity or brilliance from Alonso is gonna be enough to turn it all around.

But there is always luck and fate...

GO ALONSO!

Only thing I'm quite sure about this race is that it's gonna suck a LOT :|

Alonso should be happy with a podium of any sort.

Vettel should be happy with points of any sort.

The race will likely be dull (don't let Vettel overtaking far slower cars, or easy DRS passes between other drivers make you think it's an exciting race).

Right on.

This should be a snooze fest with a single pit stop. The circuit is crappy of the highest order. Expect Sebastian to retire if he could not get into the points.

Hopefully the front runners won't take each other out into turn 1 and present a gift to Alonso.

Well at least Seb's penalty (or whatever) turns this into an interesting race :)

I'm not a fan of his, but this kid can bloody well drive and I'm actually looking forward to seeing him employ some racing skills in a charge from the back of the field, rather than winning the first corner battle and waltzing off into the distance. He's going to have to pass more than half the field to score a single point, most of which he will dispense with fairly easily I reckon.... It's when he gets up towards the sharp end of the mid pack that his shorter gearing and the double DRS zone will begin to work against him somewhat. Hopefully we get to see some epic overtakes like at Spa this year?

Lewis, Webbo, Fred in that order for the podium, with Seb charging to 6/7 is my best guess at this stage...

I hope you are right, but I am not that optimistic :)

Vettel should pray for a safety car period to tighthen the field at the mid-stage of the race.

Well they have three assistants to help achieve that.
Probably pick on the two from the second string team to contrive the pace car rather then finger Mark.

A visit from Helmut Marko to STR would definitely smooth things up.... :)

Dear god imagine the implosion on here that would occur if something along the lines of RBR conniving with STR to help Seb's chances in this race....

It would create a tear in the time space continuum from which none would escape ;)

Maldonado for the win.

Book it, bros and girl-bros.

Vettel will not be scoring any points that is an odd number and he will finish around 35 seconds off the winner.

He just can't finish 3rd or 10th because they are odd numbers in points.

I wonder if RBR will gamble on low(er) DF setup as everyone is suggesting. They never did that before, they have no real data on how the car will react if they take a lot of wing of. His ultimate pace will be slower on that setup anyway, so in a normal race I can't see him going very far, maybe he can salvage some points but not much more in my opinion.

Alonso really needs a good result today, podium is on the cards with a good start and strategy, hopefully they will make it work.

Odd numbers in points

1st - 25 - Since he will finish 35 seconds off this - Null
2nd - 18
3rd - 15 - 15 is an odd number
4th - 12
5th - 10 - 10 isn't odd
6th - 8
7th - 6 - Not odd either
8th - 4
9th - 2
10th - 1 point - 1 is odd

If we have a normal race then he cannot finish ahead of:

the two mclarens
the two ferraris
webber
the two lotuses

so you are looking at 8th at best for him. so he's relying on quite a few problems for him to get as high as 5th.

Being realistic the best Vettel can hope for in a normal race is 8th to 10th. This track is ridiculous for overtaking even with DRS we saw it last year.

First Stint
2 HRTS
2 Marussias
2 Caterhams
and possibly the 2 toro rossos....these 2 will essentially move over.....

that gives him 16th position at least.

Am thinking there will be a couple of retirements (At least 2) which will bump him up to 14th

2nd Stint
below are the Cars he will need to pass in the reverse order......am also thinking we will have a schumacher DNF as usual which should place him 13th......getting past the saubers Williams and Force indias will really be a tall order and he will basically have about 25-30 Laps to do this......at the same time managing his tyres. if there is a safety car though his chances will increase.....I think he can do an 8th or a 9th ...but we'll see

09 Romain Grosjean
10 Nico Hulkenberg
11 Sergio Perez
12 Paul di Resta
13 Michael Schumacher
14 Bruno Senna
15 Kamui Kobayashi

and if he thinks about the win....well these are the drivers he will need to get past (In reverse order)

01 Lewis Hamilton
02 Mark Webber
03 Pastor Maldonado
04 Kimi Raikkonen
05 Jenson Button
06 Fernando Alonso
07 Nico Rosberg
08 Felipe Massa

One of the reasons I think RB's decision to start Vettel from the pit-lane was to avoid crashing out through over aggressive start if he had started off the back of the grid.

I don't think that's a main reason. He could play it safe and still overtake a few backmarkers. They must be convinced that the seconds lost in the pitlane are worth it.

Seb's tyres will cop a flogging tonight since he won't have the luxury of pole so a points finish would be a good result.

So can they change Seb's gear ratios given that he's starting from the pitlane? Or are they nominated prior to the race and therefore he's stuck with whatever they've already chosen?

Gear ratio's change costs 5 places on the grid after Friday night. But as he is starting from the pits, this becomes irrelevant. He will have them changed as well as the gearbox and will be given a 9th engine.
