TOM's, Toyota and F1

TOM's now won again the Formula Nippon championship with Kazuki Nakajima.

It's a etablished racing team and I have some questions:

1) TOM's wanted to enter F1 in 1993 without Toyota support. Didn't it happen because of money?
2) They built an own F3000 car for the Japanese series. But wikipedia lists TOM's with a Reynard chassis in that year. What about the own car?
3) When Toyota entered F1, why didn't they do that with support from TOM's?
4) Would the Toyota F1 career be more successful with TOM's?

i was there. one of design team of 5.

1) - yes
2) - dont know
3) - because they own cologne. tom's is an independant company they sub projects out to. cologne were always going to get the f1 just as they got the ts020 lm car
4) - impossible to say. ultimately whoever ran it the decisions would have been taken by toyota in much the same way (and at the same pace).

4) I think costumers should just support real racing teams as Mercedes did with McLaren or BMW with Williams.

yes, it can simplify decision making. but the bottom line is still that you (ie the race team) are still answerable to the board of the manufacturer - even if you have little direct contact.

I remember TOM's ran two Reynards for Steve Kempton and Bertrand Gachot in 1988 for the F3000 series.

Also I recall them running a Class D car in 1989 with a Honda Civic for Phil Downsett. I might be completely wrong though.
