Point taken. :) But sofar I cannot subscribe to the hype, and see Crutchlow on a Tech 3 bike being real close to the top dogs, in fact beating both Honda guys at least over one lap. I really think Honda made a mistake.

Crutchlow himself has said that there's very little difference between the Yamahas; if you want to look for someone lucky to be there your target should be Smith, not Marquez. He's looked awful so far and has done much, much less to earn his seat. Hopefully he'll pick up, if not it'd a top bike wasted.

[sarcastic]I guess the positive for Smith is that so far he's living up to all the pre season hype about his arrival in Motogp [/sarcastic]

Great to see Cal looking consistent.Shame he didn't have another lap at the end with time still on the clock. Not sure whether that was tyres or if he was blocked but it killed the moment somewhat.

Hated the new crappy-F1-like qualifying format. You can't see any full lap.
1 hour and no laps limit is the only true motorsport qualifying format, rest is just TV bullshit. :|

Would it be a little crass to say smith is the wrong brit in that ride, should really be Redding IMHO.

Have to agree with this. Same as F1 q3 now, you see nothing of the riding and then a dozen bikes crossing the finish line every 5 minutes.

Didn't Tech 3 try and drop smith but woulda had to foot up a heafty fine to get him out of the contract?

Why did they give him one in the first place? He looked decent in GP2, but there were easily half a dozen who looked as good or better, and that's without those already in motoGP becoming available.

I think his performaces in Moto2 were limited by his bike, only him and Simon and the Tech3 bike and it was pretty poor to say the least.

There's no doubt that he was hindered by the Tech3 bike because they never developed a second iteration of the chassis. The likes of Suter and Kalex had the resources to go through several.

Even Moriwaki, the 2010 chassis champions, found themselves surplus to requirements within two seasons such was the development.

It's idiotic to judge Smith based on a few sessions. People are singing the praises of Crutchlow at the moment, but it's taken a few seasons to reach this point. Afforded the time, there's no reason to suggest Smith cannot do the same on the (obviously not 100% accurate) basis of how he blew every other Tech3 rider into the weeds.

Marquez is probably the rider he dislikes the most on the grid.

Aw, is it really that obvious? :p

It didn't take very long for Cal to impress. Looking back, in his first weekend back in 2011, he was only .6 off Lorenzo in qualifying and ahead of his teammate. Smith is 1.6 seconds behind Lorenzo and 1.4 behind his teammate. Thats quite a difference.

I still think that while he may have been hindered by the Tech3 bike in Moto2, there was still the element of him underperforming to go along with it. Blowing away teammates isn't that impressive when its the likes of Di Meglio and Simeon, either.

We'll see.

Dovi did beat him but i think Cal was just as quick if not the quicker of the two on more occasions than not, he just kept binning it! It should also be remembered they didn't have the same spec bike from Estoril onwards, Dovi had better brakes than Cal! It was also only Cal's 2nd season at MotoGP level, its was Dovi's 5th, i think Cal probably has more potential than Dovi to be honest.

Dovizioso paid for his own brakes, what's wrong with that? Crutchlow had the same brakes from Catalunya onwards yet Dovizioso only really opened up the gap to Crutchlow later in the season. Also, after all of his whining about how Dovizioso got his brakes, Crutchlow was mysteriously silent on who or what paid for his. Dovizioso beat him as fair and square as it gets IMO.

Despite his GP experience Dovizioso is also the same age as Crutchlow (younger even, actually) and he's obviously still thinking of the long term by signing for a factory Ducati ride. I'm pretty sure Crutchlow would have done the same even though his Tech 3 Yamaha is the better bike in the short term.

Some silly posts above - bored F1 fans commenting on something they have no idea about....
>Marquez is on a factory Honda because he is a future multiple world champion - the most promising rider since Lorenzo

>Dovi & Cal were neck & neck all last year. Dovi edged it slightly but he's been riding these circuits since he was 15, it was only Cals 2nd year in GPs

>Smith is doing well, matching Bradls pace on his debut (Qatar 2012 - Qualified 9th, 1.4 off pole, finished 8th 29 seconds behind the winner) Disgrace is correct about the Tech 3 Moto 2 bike too - 3 years out of date by now.

>Rossi did have traffic problems in qualifying, but thats noones fault but his own. His race pace is quite good though and he should be racing with the Hondas and Crutchlow but he'll need a good start, never really his strong point.

I cant wait for the (Grand Prix) racing to start, been watching BSB and it just feels like I've been killing time all day!

My top 3 -
1-Lorenzo,
2-Marquez,
3-Crutchlow

Dovi edged it slightly

+67 points and zero race-ending crashes... And if it was due to inexperience, why was it only in the second half of the season that Dovizioso got the upper hand?

Cal had 2 podiums in the 2nd half of the season and their pace was always pretty equal.

Experience never slows down a rider. Don't forget that in 2008 Dovi was racing a Honda RC212V and Cal was doing BSB on a Honda Fireblade. Dovi has more experience of racing at this level and at the pace required to be (almost) at the front in Moto GP.

Wonderful battling in the Moto 3 race! Very impressive ride by Alex Márquez as well, fighting for the lead with the more established riders in the category.

Bout time for a bloody MotoGP race.

Rossi will be interesting.. he can't complain about the bike, if Lorenzo is getting victories on it. He should have a good race though. Podium? Top 5? Whatever happens, it'll be interesting.

yeah he rode a great race, think he had enough left to take the win but all credit to Pol Espargaro who used the available space on the track to keep Redding in second place

Not to mention a massive straight line advantage, breezed past Redding from a fair way back yet when Scott was behind he didn't make a dent, even in the slip stream!

He got a great start but had a failed move and slipped from 4th back to 7th and got stuck in traffic for the first half of the race.

Rossi - didn't win it but I am so happy to see him fighting and getting back to the front! What a comeback - sheer determination.

They should make a rule that Rossi must always be on a competitive bike in a motogp season if it was only to provide spectacle and show. Pure racecraft. The motogp qualifying is shit but the racing makes up for a lot!!

Such a nice race for 2. place. Marquez is a beast. He looks like a younger and crazier version of Stoner, always on the edge. He must have a good shot of winning the next race in Austin, maybe even the favorite as the track is new to everyone.

Typical of Rossi to make it more exciting than it should have been :p
