An Italian journalist tells Nico Rosberg that smoking cigarettes for a modern F1 driver is inconceivable. His answer:

"About the smoking? No, you're wrong, there's one driver who lights one cigarette after another. I'm not naming names."

Who is the smoking driver?

I don't believe that there is one now. They would have been noticed by now, as they would have to smoke outside somewhere.

one of my pals, who organized the hungarian f1 afterparty said more drivers smoke than you would think, but didn't say names.

yup..it's quite common not only in f1 but in normal life that people who don't really smoke, will smoke when they have drinked enough.

I would guess Kimi....maybe Maldanado, he just has that 'I don't give a F attitude'

Mclaren's drivers look squeaky clean.

Schumacher smokes cigars, but his whitened teeth don't look as though he is a habitual smoker.

Any reason why you think those two?

Hamilton because he is a fan of persons such as snoop dog and such who are notorious smokers.

Karthikeyan because he realizes he is not top class so whats the point of being in peak fitness.

Excellent logic there. I guess I should throw away my Doors and Hendrix CDs before I start tripping on acid too

You're not going to be fully fit if you're smoking.

It doesn't have to mean. Have you heard for Croatian football player Robert Prosinecki? He has always been smoking 2 packs per day and still he had a great career.

You're not going to be fully fit if you're smoking. I'll be surprised if any sportsman regularly smokes.

There was a reportage in Spanish TV a few years back, where they addressed this issue. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do remember they said the % of first division football players who smoked was surprisingly high.

In F1, I know of at least two drivers who smoke, but they are generally careful not to do it in front of cameras.

In rallying, where 'perfect image' is not that important, it's not that difficult to see pictures/videos of groups of drivers and co-drivers smoking and chatting while waiting for a stage to start. Daniel Elena, for example, smokes like a chimney and a few of the Nordic guys chew that thing they chew up there. Last year, there were pictures and videos of Räikkönen chewing Nicorette non-stop during the last few rallies of the season; he was trying, another thing is if he was successful. Loeb used to smoke, too, but I have not seen any pic of him smoking during the last few years; maybe he quit (or he hides it very well)

There was an article about smoking in autosport a few years ago.

Frank Biela as well.

EDIT: SonnyVice R, we posted at the same time!:lol:

From hanging in the ALMS paddock at Mosport and Trois-Rivières, Biela smokes like a goddam chimney.

No one chews anything. Wet snuff I think the correct English term is - it's a tobacco product which you put under the lip (absorbing the nicotine through your gum) and lesson ONE is not to chew the stuff. It's very loose so you will end up with all the stuff in your stomach and you will get proper sick. It would also defeat the purpose since you want the slow absorption into your blood.

It's quite disgusting but actually pretty harmless for being a tobacco product, you avoid a lot of the negative side effects (like cancer) this way. It would actually be good for the public health if smokers converted to this. Bad for their chances to attract the opposite sex though.

It's called Snus (swedish). No actual english term for it, I guess...

Anyway, I doubt that Räikkönen would actually smoke regularly. Would be bad for his career.

The president of the USA smokes even though his main claim to fame is redesigning the nation's health care system :D I hardly think it's a big deal if a race car driver has a smoke after a race every now and then.

This.

Don't understand why this fact would get Nico R's knickers in a twist though. It's a private matter and as long as he doesn't bother anybody else go on with it *extremely tired of health mafia*

Perhaps better clean other sports - like cycling or athletics - from regular drugs before yelling wolf in F1.

"Oral Snuff" is the English term, one so unappealing it's rarely heard. It's got to be Kimi I reckon.

Yes, let´s clean the only sports that make any sort of serious effort to be actually clean no matter how they do look to the public because of the high number of cases

A lot of Swedish and Finnish athletes use the stuff for the nicotine buzz without the breathing problems from smoked tobacco, I think the stuff is controlled in most of EU, Sweden is exempt and Finland permits importing for personal use.
