They really do hate Americans!*

*Total joke obviously, both now and if anyone reads this 25 years in the future; referencing this week's quotes from Andretti, Unser, and Fittpaldi about F1 politics.

Yea, rightly so. The guy gets payed for sitting around doing nothing all day and enjoying the show.

Seriously, what the hell? He had that job since 2005 and the year Sid passes away, he gets the boot? I really would love to know the reasons for that. And i hope it's not just about the money.

Strange. It's a big deal changing medics considering he will know all the drivers, their histories, procedures and would not doubt be involved pushing the latest safety additions. Maybe they want a new team in to bring safety to another level especially if new ideas like canopies are being mooted.

Autosport carriers the story that the FIA are not renewing the contract for the F1 doctor of the last 5 years, Gary Hartstein. http://www.autosport...t.php/id/104217

Any wild speculation as to why?

Probably the usual reason, nepotism.

From his twitter feed, I often got the feeling he wanted to push for certain things in the way F1 was run from a medical and safety perspective. It could be that he pushed too hard or in th e wrong way and became less than welcome by those within the FIA.

Btw, it's taken a while, but I am righteously pissed off. I might launch a crusade (apologies to my Muslim followers, sensitive term!) to get some answers, or get my f**king job back, or let the world know what's REALLY going on on the medical side of the FIA. Understand this: I am NOT bitter or sad. I am seriously angry. And that's bad. Not sure how or when, but there's dark clouds a-gatherin'. This is gonna be a ****ing blast!

Now I am curious. That sounds real juicy. Apart from the assumption that if something is not right on the medical front, that could possibly be dangerous for the drivers, of course.

This guy is a joke. By the looks of that Tweet it is no wonder why they got rid of him. Does he not realise that if things were so bad that he feels compelled to "let the world know what's REALLY going on on the medical side of the FIA" he should have done something about it when he was in the job? Likewise, why does he want his job back if things are that bad? This isn't the kind of judgement that I would want to see from a doctor.

Wasnt he the one pushing for more and more safety? To point where he would prefer drivers to sit in bubble wrap in a room and play iRacing.

If so then good, no need for people like this in F1. Its already almost ruined with too much safety. These drivers make millions a year for a reason, there's going to be natural risk in this profession and ALL drivers accept the risks because the reward is so huge.

HA! I think the FIA (or its lawyers) has rained on his parade! If you click on the link to his ranting Tweet the page is gone and there is no trace of it on his Twitter. He probably thought twice and deleted it. Good riddance. F1 can do without him.

How has he put his life on hold? Was he not paid by the FIA doing his profession? This has sour grapes written all over it. Why would he have deleted the Tweet if not? Doesn't look professional at all.

So spending 16-20 weekends away every year for the last 16 years, then being sacked for no apparent reason is ok?? and he's not just there for the sunday! youll probably find he is there just as long as everyone else! so yeah, life on hold! Just because he was getting paid for it, doesnt mean he got that time back! the missed birthdays, births, anniversaries any number of special occasions, memorable moments he will never get!

So yes! I agree with him, he deserves an explanation, he deserves to know where the FIA are going with their decision!

Name who is better than GH, who knows the F1 system better than him? who knows the drivers, physios, team principals.......

The decision is BS, typical FIA "because we can" attitude!

Maybe the FIA decided that he could do with getting some of his free time back

The truth is that he knew full well what he was signing up to when he agreed to the job. End of story.
If things were so bad there then he should have raised the issue when he was there not now. And if things were so bad then why does he want his job back? Sounds like an overblown fan boy to me and I for one will not lose any sleep over it.

LOL the entitlement is ridiculous really

The guy has a contract it comes to an end and FiA want to hire someone else
Their prerogative, end of really

Then the good doc goes into meltdown mode which -for me- is confirmation FiA are doing the right thing.

If the drivers and teams really think Hartstein should be there for them then nobody is stopping them to hire the doc but I'm pretty sure that won't happen

If only all docs had the dignity of Prof. Watkins :(

The GH detractors here don't seem to have a clue about what happened. He had a contract that was ending this winter and no doubt was expecting it to be renewed as F1 will still need a motorsport experienced doctor in the medical car. Hartstein then finds out his contract is not being renewed from the press release issued by the FIA, the journalists knew he had lost his job before he did. He had not been contacted beforehand, had no warning about it, and he has not had any answer from the FIA as to why his contract has not been renewed or what they are going to do next year.

I don't know about the rest of us here but I know I would also be pretty pissed off if at the end of a contract and expecting to be discussing the next one I had found out from someone else that I was out of a job and my employer had refused to answer any questions about why they had done it.

So, how are the teams and drivers supposed to hire Hartstein then, considering the FIA is in charge of the medical facilities? How is he supposed to help in an accident when he wouldn't be allowed on the track.

I respectfully disagree. It seems that even Hartstein deemed his opening salvo unsuitable for public consumption since he has since deleted it from Twitter! Doesn't look like behaviour which is becoming of a doctor to me. Looks more like a grumpy fanboy's reaction at losing his pass! Such a shame

Sure if everything went according to the story of dr. Hartstein then sure you've a point and things could've been handled a bit better. However we only know one side -Hartstein's- of this story.

Fact remains that FiA is free to hire medical expertise of their choosing as long as they are competent.
Hartstein had a contract and that ended, FiA opted to go along without him, tough but fair enough.

No reason at all to make asinine comments and veiled threats on twitter

He sounds like a guy with a very outgoing personality and a great sense of humor. A guy that would make a great conversationalist over a beer or 10. I'm sure he would have some very interesting stories to tell, and yeah I agree with everybody else in here that he deserves and explanation for why he was fired.

More tweeting: https://twitter.com/former_f1doc

Gary Hartstein ‏@former_f1doc
I have heard from people who should know that my tweeting had a role, or at least provided an excuse, for JT and GS to fire me. Out of curiosity, let's have an informal poll. Has my tweeting (all of it-rants, F1, cooking and politics) hurt, done nothing to or improved the fan's image of the FIA?

Obviously not scientific. Naysayers would likely not respond. But this is what I thought. Tried never to reflect badly on the outfit. Have been smitten by the twitter-generated conceit that what I have to say deserves saying publicly. That may be right or wrong, but I so love the interaction with all of you. And your tweets.

In response to someone asking about him taking videos on the Thursday of a race weekend whereas marshals can't: Maybe coz Thursday isn't part of the weekend. In any event, that's FOM not FIA and I've had nthng but support from Mr. E

And: https://twitter.com/...071780619374597 Their reasons are personal and petty. Petit gens, petit comportment.
