Sebastian Vettel dominated both FP1 and FP2 times despite having an issue during FP2.

Let's see if he can keep it up or the others will catch up as the track gets more rubber.

HRT are worried they'll fail to qualify by the sounds of it.

So 22 cars on the grid come Sunday is a possibility then.

I honestly think that Q1 & Q2 will be full of alleged, actual, intentional and accidental blocking as the cars circulate on an ever improving surface that will be fastest at the end of each session.
Some interesting calls for the Stewards (anyone know who the driver steward is?) to sort out.
Hopefully that wont affect the grid positions for Vettel and Alonso, I want to see them and their title spoilers (Hamilton, Button & Raikkonen) RACE tomorrow.

If the rumours are true about HRT being at the brink financially and that they're using components well beyond their design lifetime then in some ways it would be a blessing if they didn't qualify. It would look terrible to future buyers but that team always look bad IMO.

Has anyone ever qualified pole on hard tyres recently?
Vettel might do that today perhaps? That'd give him a huge advantage in the race.

Or no?

There is no reason to qualify on hards, I think. It has often been seen that the hard tyres are comparatively more compromised using with heavy fuel than the other way around. It is much better to manage the race by being on similar strategy with others and the leader doesn't have to try anything different.

I think the field will be close in Q as usual. But even if RB has a big advantage, I doubt they'd go for hards. It would just increase the risk not to get pole and starting on hards is more difficult.

he doesn't need to gamble if he is faster than the rest.

Pedro de la Rosa has been quoted as saying HRT and everyone else are struggling to turn the tyres on, after 10 laps they come off the car looking like new and that because of that the track isn't rubbering in and evolving as would be expected.
That could make practice and qualifying interesting for everyone.

The Red Bull will never go for hards in Q3. Heck, they won't be using the harder compound even in Q2.

The Red Bull will use prime tyres only in Q1 - similar strategy to McLaren and Ferrari.

There is malaria going on in the paddock, several Red Bull team workers and reporters have been taken to hospital.apparently they have gotten malaria from india three weeks ago.

Other teams have said it takes at least ten laps toget tyres working and Pirelli has brought way too hard tyres to Austin, Mark Webber said start will be interesting because the left side of the track is a joke, there is no grip in there so better to qualify on the clean side!

I find Seb's pace very depressing tbh.

Love this track though, I just hope it doesn't turn into another RBR demonstration drive on Sunday. :/

Very silly thing to be caught with, given the effective meds available these days. New Delhi has a malaria presence. 100% deet and malarone would have been standard issue?

Are you for real? It's not a very silly thing to be caught with just because there's some effective meds available.

It is if they didn't take suitable precautions. Given how many people it kills I'd be amazed if the teams didn't protect their people.

Having stayed in malaria risk areas for months (with wetlands and swamps no less) it is pretty silly. DEET can be overkill, but a tropical strength repellent and vitamin B high diet and common precautions while sleeping are about enough prevent it so long as you aren't staying in an open wooden hut at night.

Add malarone and a 2 weekly dose would be less than $100.

Spend a few grand preventing it or risk someone important falling ill and ruining a race with the potential to lose millions in points revenue?

Apparently Mclaren tried something different in FP2 which didn't work so are going to revert back for FP3, thats about the only hope there is for stopping a Seb led procession, that and another water leak!

Thank You for the info Engel regarding Emerson Fittipaldi as the driver steward.
A wise old head might be needed this afternoon in Austin and again tomorrow on race-day.
I anticipate that blocking and staying within the white lines that define the circuit as points for debate this week-end.
Ferrari could use Felipe very effectively both this afternoon, (just enough to limit the qualifying performance of Sebastian) and tomorrow in the race, though the expected one-stop will limit that potential scenario.
As a Kimi fan I'd like an Alonso win with Sebastian on the podium just behind my favourite.
That would set it up nicely for a decider in Interlagos.
It should be a very interesting next few hours :smoking:

Obviously I'm an Alonso fan so want him to beat Seb but for the sport an Alonso win with Seb third would make for a thrilling decider in Interlagos. Equal on points, whoever can finish ahead wins it!

Bernie will instruct the HRT's to spin in the middle of the track bringing out the safety car in the race I guarantee. That's what the American's do afterall ;) They don't do real sport remember they only do far-fetched circumstances.

Judging by the (worrying) rumours, the cars are essentially moving debris.

Aside from the obvious fact that such a thing would be unsporting, cheating, and bad from the sport, Massa would probably need to make Q3 for that to happen.

That first corner is insanely wide. Surely people are going to try and dive up the inside tomorrow and a massive pile up is almost inevitable? You could fit ten cars going in there!

It switches around. They to a good job showing a selection of drivers doing their laps.
