They sell trucks right around the ****ing corner from my house, so God knows why a 2,000km drive is necessary to get an update version of the truck we already had. And I know this sounds like the most little kid problem ever lol.

Cross your fingers that it has SAT radio. I got a new jeep last year that has Sirious on board and the NASCAR channel is part of the package. That way you can listen to the race and annoy your parents at the same time. I also highly recommend the Outlaw Country channel as well for additional annoyance value, my wife hates it, and I like it.

Coo Coo Marlin, 1976 Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan.

Note where the infield parking/campground was at MIS at that time. Wherever folks wanted, essentially.

Kinda reminds me of the irony that teams can get a fine for outlawish bumpers while it's effectively legal to destroy the bumpers and have no one complaning about the cars running lighter. Red Bull even ran a shorter car in that epic race Smokey got his last title.

I know it's obvious, but we can't have day 14 without a Smoke pic.

Certainly when they're composed like that.

How was the statement? "I am a fine tuned athlete"? It certainly takes someone special to cause that big one last year.

They should have a special award for how many cars you can take out in the initial shunt. He got a fair few at Talladega.

I think his intention was to steal the "Final Lap Bonehead Move Award", Sato was sooo close to walking away with it.

So who's looking forward to seeing Kyle Larson's signature victory celebration in the Big Time this year?

Maybe it's just a prematurely old fart in me talking, but it would be refreshing when one of the young guns celebrates by driving to a victory lane in a dignified manner, like he's been there before, without doing those stupid burnouts. That would be something unique for a change.

Now, Magoo don't go confusing the kids here by making 'em think that was a NASCAR car.

Better yet, I wonder who here (excluding the old guys) even knows what the car is? :D

EDIT: And, no, I never saw one of those at any short tracks, though it is just about the only make I didn't see as a tyke.

 Thanks for the cool photos.

On a complety useless note, Sprint Unlimited is showing up on the portuguese Sporttv 3 shedule, and shocker, it's being shown live (last year the final race of the chase was shown in delay, really made up my mind about not going for a sub this year).
I guess Nascar will remain on Sporttv 3 on the same format as last year.

Bit off topic, but any of you excited for NHRA this year? Was really into drag racing when I was a kid and only in the last few weeks sort of rekindled my interest via Youtube, and now I'm excited for the 2013 season and for more reasons than just Courtney Force's cracking tits.

NHRA is so boring to me. I can go to the local drag strip and watch more exciting races and have more fun because I'm in the pits. I served as crew chief for my mentor's efforts one evening last year. It basically consisted of turning the valve on and off on the nitrous bottle while he was in line and after the run, and trying to help him do his burnouts and stage. I'd say I helped in other ways but he didn't take a single lick of any of my other advice. He's a hardheaded man.

Sorry, buddy. I wish I could say that I don't "get" drag racing but I think I do--I've been drag racing with friends and I've done it a little bit myself with an old Chevy I souped up myself on test and tune days. But the waiting between runs drives me mad. I like more continuity in my action and to see the same competitors constantly in action for the whole event.

2012 was a great year, extended highlights in HD on ESPN America (with sportsman highlights on a dedicated proggram as well!) and a handy youtube channel.
I guess it's my turn this year to make a new thread, even if just for bashing the local ponies, on my count there is one pony per class this year.

Let's conspire for a new thread Andrew!

I was trying that DirecTV(I think) onboard pay-per-view thingy that year. It was free for Daytona, and I was riding on the dash-cam with Dale Jarrett as they went through the tri-oval and Newman's suddenly going by with all 4 off the ground.

Sadly I know exactly what you mean. When I say "rekindled interest" I mean more that I found a few 2-3 hour videos on Youtube of entire 2012 NHRA events (or at least the big four categories), and I keep skipping a few minutes ahead after each race, to go past the interviews and basically time travel until the burnouts for the next run. I haven't been to a drag race in probably 15 years, which is a long time when you aren't 22 yet. But just through Youtube since the start of February or so I've found that's my go-to boredom killer of the last few weeks, and this year's season starts in the next few days (tomorrow I think, actually). I doubt I will ever be interested enough to spend money to actually go to an event, but somehow a sport I haven't cared about in a decade and never seriously followed in my life has become something I've mentally launched straight to the "find a stream" section of my brain, alongside Nascar and Indycar whenever it's not on TV.

I've had to look up a lot of terms that I've forgotten. I even had to Google "holeshot win" just to be sure it meant what I thought it meant.

Do it up! Who cares if it's only us posting, if nothing else we can post highlights, annoy the occasional F1 lover who watches four seconds and comes to the thread to bitch. More than anything we can commiserate over the yearly tradition of every babe that drag races getting married to become Ashley Force-Something and Erica Enders-Something and making me feel like Andrew Hope-Destroyed. Let's get it going!

Todd Bodine gets a ride for Daytona with ThorSport. In 2011, he managed to turn a one race deal into a full season and last year he turned a one race deal into a full season. Let's see if he can do it again.

Hope he has a bit of luck and can work something out. I'll be pulling for him. The guy is a champ.

In related news, Red Horse showed pics of Townley's #11 truck today. I get the feeling on this day next year I will be posting multiple images of said truck upside down and/or on fire.

Soo. . .who will be making the 2013 Daytona Speedweeks thread this year?

I think it would be a travesty to just have one thread for two weeks worth of action.

We need a thread for this weekend (the Unlimited and qualifying)

A thread for the duels.

A thread for race weekend.

Go for it.

Hi,

Im new to NASCAR but followed The Chase last year and really enjoyed the "200 mph chess match" that the races are!
Im really looking forward to follow the whole season this year with the Gen 6 cars and especially the Daytona speed week starting on saturday! :)

I disagree... One or two (one for the Unlimited and one for everything else) threads will suffice.

And I don't make threads until midseason.

Interesting stuff going on right now.
They've just soaked the track with water trucks at Daytona, and are displaying the benefits of the new dryer system. One pass of the top groove and it's dry.

So it took a fireball and a scorched track for NASCAR to consider upgrading their program for dealing with the rain?

They could have come up with this years ago, it's better for their business. Which is 99% what they care about.

Well I'm glad they didn't use this system last year. We would've never had The Montoya Incident, and Romney might have become President.

Still think they should go back to getting started at Daytona by the weekend after the Super Bowl. There's a bit of a void in US sports at that time and it would be a good way to get some ratings without competition from football or baseball, maybe drop in an off week during a busy stretch of the season. Were they thinking about the NFL season expansion (which many I heard assumed was a done deal but didn't/hasn't happened) when they moved things back a week?
