What are you guys thinking about the Gen6 cars after Phoenix? I liked the race, I thought it had decent lead changes, overtakes, and general racing entertainment. Just wondering what you guys think.

*cough*(mods dont read this)I wish I could find a place with old nascar races... anyone know of a place? pm me *cough*

Oh, NASCAR...

http://www.sbnation....-motor-speedway

First of all, the freaking victory lane celebration is pretending to shoot off guns INTO THE AIR. If anything, the NRA will insist that the victor practice gun safety or they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on that one.

Secondly, according to this: http://espn.go.com/d...sprint-cup-race, race sponsorship is a deal made directly with the track, not with NASCAR.

Thirdly, they sponsored a Nationwide race last season: http://www.atlantamo...r-speedway.html

Overall, it's a total non-story.

A stat that popped up after Daytona was that Danica was the 13th driver to lead both indy and Daytona 500's I was wondering who the other 12 were.
Easy ones to pick off are AJ Foyt and Mario who won both, Tony Stewart is another so is Montoya (he has led Daytona, I'm sure of it, forget when though) I have a feeling the other eight are going to be some big names!

I think people will see it differently now though. Especially since they're dropping a few mil on a Cup deal. I'm not sure I remember the Nationwide race though I bet we made comments about it at the time.

They're lucky it's at Texas where the "Oh, we have nothing to do with this, it's with the track" argument actually washes. Otherwise it'd be ISC.

Should be anyway.
The NRA is no different than the ACLU.
They both stand up for the Bill of Rights.
They just picked different amendments.

Hmmm.... Not sure I'd agree with that. The NRA seem to represent the interests of the firearms industry more than gun owners. They used to be for universal background checks and national databases and the like, but now they think it's the most ridiculous thing EVER.

Right now there is a federal law against selling firearms to the the mentally ill, but there is no national database for the mentally ill to even enforce universal background checks, if they were the law.
Until the feds can enforce their own myriad gun laws on the books, what is the point in writing more laws? Many states already have gun registration laws, including the one I live in, California, which has not affected gun crime rates in anyway whatsoever. So what is the need for a national database of gun owners other than creating another useless, and redundant, federal bureaucracy? It certainly will do nothing to prevent gun violence, but instead add an unnecessary burden to gun owners, an unnecessary expence to the rest of the citizens who do not own guns and provide a potential avenue for the government to seize any weapon from it's citizens, should it choose to.
If anyone has enhanced the interests of the gun industry, it's our current president, not the NRA, firearms sales are astronomical since he's taken office. To put it in perspective, under Bush II there were a total of 34 mil background checks run in his first term, under Obama's first term, there have been 65 mil, a greater number than the population of the UK, and 91% higher than under Bush.

The overwhelming gun problem in my state (NY) is that the handguns being used to commit crimes are trafficked in from other states. Mike Bloomberg hates the State of Virginia with a passion. The VAST majority of these guns are stolen, with shaved numbers.

Background checks and databases won't do a damn thing to lower the amount of NYPD officers being shot, or little kids taken down with an errant bullet while standing on the street, with these thugs brandishing stolen weapons.

That guy Chu(?) that shot up Virginia Tech bought his guns legally in Virginia although he was declared mentally unstable by the state. Because Virginia had no registry of the mentally incompetent that would show up on his background checks.
I like how Cuomo gave the Movie guys a break on his new law so they could still make violent movies in NY. His new law was so quickly, and thoughtlessly written that even New York police officers had illegal weapons the way it was written. Brilliant.

As far as guns and movies go, look at my profile pic. Trying to look like a hardass, and the freakin thing misfires  Typical.

It's a close call for two of the big Indy names who made the list by a single lap led each. Johnny Rutherford also won a pole and qualifier in the 1960s, and Al Unser Sr. had a single lap led en route to an 8th in the 1960

It was mentioned in passing like a month ago, but for those who are interested, Swede Alx Danielsson has announced on his blog that he will make his NASCAR debut at Bristol in the K&N East season-opening race next Saturday. No word if it for the entire season or partial.

He is also filming a documentary about his progress in NASCAR.

Good for him. This is probably his last chance to get his career back on track. That ride isn't terrible so if he can have solid finishes, he might get some more opportunities. If not, then he'll join a long list of other young drivers that showed some promise, got moved along really quickly with little results, and then became damaged goods. He's only 28 or 29 I think.

Slightly off topic but it applies to NASCAR, but I've been reading up on SPEED's conversion to Fox Sports 1. It sounds like they'll be retaining all their NASCAR programming for the next couple of years. I'm sure that will change when they bid for other sports in the years that come, but all the Cup coverage and Truck series races are safe for now. I haven't seen anything on if they'll air the occasional K&N or Modified race. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were cut. I haven't seen news on if they'll still air V8 Supercars or GRANDAM/ALMS either.

I find it hard to believe Salt Walther led at Indy. I don't know if Hurtubise led at Indy but he could have led at Daytona--he won in Atlanta and only had 11 NASCAR starts.

"Front Engined" Hurtubise?

A resounding yes. Much like young uns' who only think of A.J. Foyt as a fat, crotchety old guy also may only think of "Herk" for what they've read about him. But, along with a young A.J., the guy was a terror when he came on the scene. Obviously, a severe accident took a lot out of him, but he still had his moments.

His results don't show it, but he was a threat to win in just about any race he was in from 1960-64.

And he raced a lot of rear-engined cars too, despite only being identified with his Mallard.

At the Indianapolis 500, it was in '61 and '63. Both times he started from the front row (3rd in '61 and 2nd in '63). He led 35 laps in 1961.

I'll have to check the Daytona 500. I want to say he led in '67 when Mario pitted.

EDIT: It was 1966.

Jim led 4 laps in the 1966 Daytona 500 driving for Norm Nelson

Jim also led the Indy 500 in two years 35 laps in 1961 and 1 lap in 1963 ( 1st lap duel with Parnelli Jones)

Racing Reference is great for finding stats for some of the series which help me this time

Johnson's Indy 500 helps with Indy 500 stats

Just wanted to add to this a little more: if you watch ARCA, Grand-Am, K&N, or/and Trucks on SPEED - expect most, if not all, of that coverage to be moved to FuelTV next year.

It's already been confirmed that the Trucks TV rights will be retained by Fox for multiple years. It's just a matter of whether it'll be remain on SPEED (soon to be Fox Sports 1) or it's sister channel, FuelTV.

Well, I guess that Fox is hoping to compete with the Disney/ABC/ESPN. They want to add NASCAR Sprint Cup point-paying races to (by 2015) so that the channel could be added to the expanded basic cable package in more regions as competition to ESPN. I assume they want FuelTV to be their ESPN2, so adding more programs that people want would make sense in that regard.

Basically:

ABC/ESPN/ESPN2
FOX/Fox Sport One/FuelTV

Or something like that.
