Tho you really can't tell the difference...

JMac has already through 7 races scored as many top 10's as he scored in the whole of last season.

JPM's had the speed but not the luck.

Well, speed is also part of the deal, but you have to look for it.

It'd be a hell of a lot better than a second Texas(oval) race.

Far more interesting.

Haven't many of the drivers expressed the opinion that the chase should include at least one road race?

NASCAR on a Tilkedrome? Not really feeling it.

Don't mind another road course or two, especially in The Chase, but not COTA.

With that I totally agree.
Heck, bad in the good old days, NASCAR should have run at the original Sebring.

Uhm, so the Nationwide race isn't on ESPN or 2?

According to tvracer.com the NW race is on Espn3&EspnNews... and according to my DVR only quali is on...

I'm not sure why they'd run a race that wasn't broadcast on one of their main channels... Or Speed even. Wat.

So no one has posted the follow up?

50 Point penalty. Both driver and owner.
Win does not count toward wild card entry into chase.
Crew Chief fined $200,000 and suspended six races plus all star race.

Ok, makes sense, right? But get this.

And in a rare move, car owner Joe Gibbs had his owner's license suspended for the next six races and he won't earn car owner points during that time. He also was docked 50 car owner points. Toyota, which supplies the JGR engines through Costa Mesa, Calif.-based TRD, also lost five points in the manufacturer standings.

Dude, taking away MANUFACTURERs points, and suspending an owner's license is unheard of. UNHEARD of. This makes Carl Long's penalties look like a slap on the wrist.

All for one connecting rod being 2.7 grams underweight. That doesn't help. Balancing that engine must have been a chore. If anything I'm wondering how they didn't notice it at that stage.

We've talked about this before, but the message is clear.

Dont.

Mess.

With.

The.

Engine.

Makes me think that something else is missing from this story...

I mean maybe they are just trying to crack down on people taking advantages over grey areas... but all this over 2.7 grams? There's gotta be more.

Google Carl Long.

NASCAR doesn't care how miniscule it is, if there is something in the engine not in code. . .that's your ass.

Gibbs was hit with the same size fine, but of course they can afford to pay it. Carl Long can't because he's not allowed to work in the garage until it's paid off.

The Sprint Cup garage, at least. He has still popped up in some NW races and as a crew chief for Rick Ware Racing.

Oh btw, former CWTS points leader Johnny Sauter was caught with a modified fuel cell. He got hit with a 25 championship driver (which drops Sauter from 1st to tied for 2nd with Jeb Burton) and 25 championship owner points fine. And crew chief Joel Shear was hit with a 10,000 fine and suspended 4 races.

Surely if Kenseth's engine was illegal then NASCAR's course of action should have been exclusion from the race, and possibly a ban from more races?

2.7g doesn't sound like much, but I'm sure it is more significant on a con-rod than an engine block. It sounds like only one though, which would mean a QC failure in TRD. But why would they have underweight parts lying around so that they can (accidentally) be used?

One rod being underweight shouldn't be an advantage. This is likely a vendor's mistake and someone at TRD didn't pick up on it. 3 grams isn't all that much and could conceivably been from a mistake in manufacturing. If all the rods were underweight, then yes, you could easily make a case for cheating. One rod though? If anything it should be a hindrance that could potentially cause engine failure

NASCAR doesn't take away wins in the records. And they banned the person who oversaw the car. Look at the penalties.

I agree it was likely a vendor's mistake , but what i wonder is if those engine vendors allow anyone to open an engine to work on it once it gets delivered to the team(s)

If not how can a team know the engine is truely legit?

I also expect other Toyota's the fail engine inspections til all the engines run at Kansas get rebuilt or removed from the system

This wasn't a mistake, somebody in the TRD shop found black magic.
We ran sportsman* class in the NHRA. Did anywhere between 1-4 rebuilds per race weekend. And had all reciprocating parts logged and matched. When we changed pistons or con-rods, they were all matched sets. At the level Gibbs is at everything in that mill is measured to the thousandth and weighed to 1/10th of gram. With top of the line scales and micrometers.
An engine that far off should grenade. There is definitely more to it than is meeting the eye at this point, OLB is absolutely right, you jack w/ NASCAR tech in the engine bay and you are beyond screwed. Without banning people as if they were on drugs, this penalty is about as harsh as it gets, Penske got hammered last week, Gibbs got hammered this week, everyone else better mind their Ps and Qs . NASCAR has made it doubly evident they will not be screwed with, and has made that point pretty damn clear now early in the season.
* cheap ass

Gibbs and Ratcliffe have a history with big penalties from that ridiculous Nationwide incident when they tried using magnets under the pedal to throw off a performance test. Wonder if that played a role. A few other past penalties that seemed outsized for the violation have been rumored to be related to a team testing NASCAR's patience multiple times - Martin with Roush at Richmond back in the 1990s was one such instance.

Agreed - but as long as there are questions and ambiguity as to what discipline will be handed out each time someone gets busted, it opens the door to speculation as to why a particular punishment was handed out, if past violations were taken into consideration, etc. Especially when it's an unexpected whopper like Kenseth's.

BTW didn't Toyota once issue a stern edict to its teams after Waltrip got nabbed for the fuel additive at Daytona?
