Or he's testing it for him? I remember when Hendrick ran people like Papis in their cars for road course tests.

Though it would point to Piquet, it'd be an easy race for them.

Trucks into a hairpin, oy vey.

Nelson is testing the 30 truck at Mosport today, guess it pretty much shows their hand at who is going to be in the truck during the race. NW will be in Atlanta the previous day, though.

Mosport is that new track in Canada, is not an oval? So, I think they picked Nelson to test because he is the most experienced driver in this kind of track. I think he can a very good setup on the truck.

Here's a good onboard of Mosport. They used to have the Canadian GP there WAY back. I'm not sure it's changed much...

Denny is going to start the race at Dega apparently... and get out as soon as he can. Maybe it's for sponsors or something, but I don't get it. What if theres a pile up? I just don't see the risk meeting the reward.

As far as I know he is always conservative in Super Speedways, running way back the front.

As Ross said, it's for points. He can easily ride at the back until a caution comes out and will earn the points for wherever the relief driver finishes.

He probably doesn't have a shot at getting to the top 10 in points but this will get him closer to the top 20 and possibly earning a wildcard.

One journo said Hamlin can start the race and make it to the first flag and be replaced by another driver.

Hamlin inherits the points his proxy driver scores.

So old, in fact, that the hairpin was designed by Stirling Moss.

Onboard with Nelson from Mosport :-

And he tweeted "Good 2 days testing here in canada done.. The @NASCAR_Trucks series will be a blast here! Can't wait to be back!"

Welcome. You are correct, it's a restrictor place.
Speaking of plates, what happened to the plans to replace the plates for electronics? Too much gizmos getting on the engine side?

A number of reports Hamlin isn't cleared to race. Hard to predict cautions at the plate tracks in spite of the pile ups - many races have had long green stretches as the field looks to stay out of trouble before chaos breaks out in the end, as happened at Daytona earlier and during some of the COT races.

Penske penalties have been upheld with no alterations. The team is making another appeal, so the affected personnel can work 'Dega.

I don't ever recall them saying that change would happen quickly. Just that it was possible and would be coming in the future. They never publicly set a target and NASCAR moves slowly with stuff like this.

I have been literally praying for one down here and my feeling is that it's impossible. If the petrol crazed americans can't organize themselves how can we Formula 1 centered europeans have 1. Look at the mess of Indycar and ESPN UK.

I thought that was Piquet Jr in the car? It's a modern(or about 10 years) old F3 car. Unless Dad did a one-off? That's certainly modern Hollywood and Havoline branding, not 70s/80s when Piquet Sr would have been in F3.

Sad news. . .

Phoenix Racing to exit NASCAR: Unable to find a long-term sponsor for his #51 Sprint Cup team, James Finch is eyeballing an exit from racing all together. "I'm contemplating finishing up this year, and I don't know if I want a sponsor," Finch said Monday. "Sunday was my 776th start in NASCAR between the Nationwide and Sprint Cup. That's a lot of weekends. I'm considering pulling the plug later in the summer." Finch, 62, said Phoenix Racing will not enter any races after the Brickyard 400 scheduled for July 28 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He said he intends to wrap up team operations before the Chase for the Cup begins in September. "I have not been able to get the right amount of funding, the economy is pretty bad, and a lot of people don't want to do it," Finch said of his team's fruitless search for a permanent sponsor. "I'm getting kind of burned out. I think it is time for me to do something else." Finch's decision comes in the midst of one of his most successful seasons as an owner. Finch currently is tied for 13th in NASCAR's owner points standings with 276 points, just a handful of points outside the Top 10. Phoenix Racing enjoyed a fourth-place finish with Kurt Busch behind the wheel for the Nationwide race at Talladega this past weekend, and Regan Smith steered the team's #51 car to a sixth-place finish in Sunday's Aaron's 499. The team's success, which includes a pair of Top-10 finishes and five Top-15 results, did not appear to help the team find a full-time sponsor, however. The team has found sponsors for individual or small blocks of races, but the lack of a permanent sponsor has forced Finch to cover his team's considerable costs on his own. "I don't want to lose everything I've got trying to outrun people," Finch said. "I can't do that. It's time to do something else and go from there. I've still got some cars I haven't torn up. And I don't want to build any new ones." Finch said he will help his 18 employees find work with other racing teams if they want to remain in the sport.(News Herald)(5-7-2013)

He has been saying that he didn't know if he could run full seasons for the past 3 or 4 years and made it through. It looks like the lack of sponsorship finally caught up.

Honestly it's sad but almost happy at the same time. I don't want to hear that he burned through his money or screwed people to just stay in the sport; becoming miserable from it. When yer burned out youre burned out.

I'm just glad that as a team they've made it this far and their impact will be around for ages.

If he is serious about this--this isn't the first time he's decided to pull out--it'll be sad so see him go. At least he seems to be dong it with class, helping his employees find new work and as was said above, not bankrupting the team and leaving workers with no jobs and back pay owed.

Your NASCAR comic quotes of the day

Charmin wants skid marks to be contained to the racetrack. Or at least that’s the idea behind its sponsorship of this month’s Sprint All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600.

Charmin has signed a deal with Charlotte Motor Speedway to sponsor the two NASCAR events, and as part of the deal the Procter & Gamble toilet paper brand plans to hang banners outside the speedway and signs along pit road that tout Charmin Ultra Strong. The billboard-sized exterior banners will feature the backside of white, men’s briefs with tire skid marks down them.

One of the banners will face the speedway’s fan zone outside Turn 1; the other will hang on the suite facade facing N.C. Highway 29, which runs outside the speedway. Charmin’s deal also includes 45 TV-visible signs along pit road during both races.

Charmin will be running a social media campaign with #TweetFromTheSeat, which is part of its ongoing Twitter efforts, and sampling its Ultra Strong product near the bathrooms at the fan zone. Its mascot, a red bear, will be roaming the campgrounds throughout the day of the all-star race.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t available.

The idea of promoting Charmin at a NASCAR race came from the brand’s creative agency, Publicis Kaplan Thaler. The agency has taken an irreverent approach in its promotion of Charmin and recently touted its relationship with the brand in Ad Age by saying, “We think about poop and toilet paper all day, every day. And we love it.”

The creative team was in the process of developing new creative around Charmin’s Ultra Strong line and wanted to raise awareness of the brand’s reputation as a plush but strong product capable of preventing skid marks for children in the early stages of potty training. They thought NASCAR, which has a history of having drivers create skid marks to celebrate victories, offered a natural tie and a large fan base that would allow it to amplify its marketing message.

GMR Marketing, which works with P&G, approached several racetracks with the promotional idea and ultimately settled on Charlotte Motor Speedway because it has two Sprint Cup events over back-to-back weekends (May 18 and May 26).

CMS liked the idea and wiped clean its most high-profile signage on pit road for the deal.

“It’s a creative use of their product with a natural tie-in to the sport. It’s fun,” said Dan Farrell, CMS’s senior vice president of corporate sales. “It’s important to have recall with creative, and I’m sure there will be a buzz and the recall will be second to none for this.”

While the Charmin sponsorship and promotion may toe the line of some people’s good taste, it is far less controversial than the deal CMS’s sister track, Texas Motor Speedway, recently cut with the NRA. Both tracks are owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc., and the NRA 500, which was held last month, garnered national media coverage because of the ongoing debate about gun control in the U.S.

In addition to selling a two-race sponsorship to Charmin, CMS sold a sponsorship to Sun Products’ Snuggle and All laundry detergents. The brands will provide a tented “laundry” lounge in the campground during the Sprint All-Star and Coca-Cola 600 race weekends. The lounge will host corn hole games, a happy hour and an appearance by driver Juan Pablo Montoya. Campers will be able to have laundry done for free at the lounge, as well.

The deal came through the Target Chip Ganassi Racing program, which includes the Snuggle and All brands. Target ran a promotion in the campgrounds at Charlotte Motor Speedway last year that helped boost sales at nearby stores by 28 percent, Farrell said, and that prompted Snuggle and All to approach the speedway about doing something in the campgrounds this year.

“It’s about touching campers,” Farrell said.

So, for the first time in... how many years, will it not be a full grid for the Cup?
