I'm not saying Miatas aren't fun! They just don't seem very manly. They're like Formula Fords. Fun as tits but you look like a little kid racing them.

No. Wouldn't be protected by the First Amendment either. NASCAR(or any sports league) can fine you for saying stupid things

We truly live in a Big Brother society.

No. That's just sports. If you called someone a fag at work, even jokingly, you might get a chat with HR.

And the Bill of Rights is mainly to protect you from the government, it doesn't apply as much to person-to-person or person-to-company activity.

I really don't want to come across as if I am always disagreeing with you, I understand that what you are saying is how is works since NASCAR would only fine Junior if they have the right to. But an exchange between people on a public social media, where one calls one a 'fag' and the reply back is that the 'he questions his own masculinity', does really not seem to be anything NASCAR should concern themselves with, I see this as nothing but friendly banter blow completely out of proportion.

There are a lot of incorrect stuff going on in all workplaces, and 99% of it is give and take between males, females, gays, lesbians, transgender, Asians, Occidentals, indigenous, African-'country', the 1% is something HR should and does clamp down on.

This instance is really a storm in a cup about nothing.

Your response to it certainly is.

But yeah I think it was a non-event. But NASCAR had to nail it both for consistency of rules enforcement and so they can't at all be accused of condoning it. Otherwise no one would have noticed or even cared. Nelson Piquet Jr is a nobody, if Kasey Kahne did it, it'd be a 'thing'.

Piquet's major mistake was using fag. If he had said gay it would have been fractionally less of an issue, but on paper still a no no. You just can't say stuff like that if you're a public figure.

He's lucky he only got a punishment from NASCAR and not a backlash from GLAAD or whomever.

$10,000 fine for Piquet, plus indefinite probation. He also has to undergo sensitivity training as directed by NASCAR.

No word on whether the sensitivity training requires the driving of an automatic Miata.

Statements-

TSM Statement: We have spoken to Nelson about his insensitive comment and he understands that such remarks will not be tolerated at Turner Scott Motorsports. TSM expects those associated with the team to uphold professional standards that we can all be proud of. Nelson has assured the team that he has learned his lesson and he knows what it means to represent TSM.(Turner Scott Motorsports)

Piquet Statement: "I sincerely apologize to everyone for my poor choice of words last week. I did not mean to hurt or offend anyone," the Brazilian said in a statement. This has been a cultural learning experience that will make me a more sensitive person moving forward."

Steve O'Donnell; Nelson Piquet Jr. recently communicated an offensive and derogatory term that cannot be tolerated in our sport, NASCAR's Code of Conduct explicitly spells out in the 2013 rule book our position regarding the use of disparaging terms. We expect our entire industry to abide by this Code.(NASCAR)

I meant earlier yet. I understand he was a sportscaster or news reporter on an Ohio TV station and did other sports play-by-play, but I don't know of his level of auto racing involvement/coverage prior to showing up.

Motorweek Productions had a tendency to go with guys with no racing background, whereas others leaned heavily to nepotism or, in some cases, mafioso like in their hiring practices :D

So what's the deal with guys like that? My understanding is that a lot of commentators pursue that career in the hopes of covering a certain sport and for whatever reason get shunted sideways into something they don't care about.

Penske renews Keselowski and Miller Lite contracts til 2017.

The new deal with Miller will cover only 24 races per year instead of the usual full 36 race schedule, at Roger's request.

At Roger's request?  Interesting.  I guess he thinks he can do better than 1/3 of what they were paying with the other 12 races.

Probably Hornish's NW sponsors (Alliance, Wurth), seeing as Hornish's having no ride due to Penske wanting to "move some sponsorship around" and Blaney looks to be back in the Truck series next year.

In an off beat NASCAR related tidbit...
The plane that crashed in Nigeria killing 27 yesterday was owned by Dale,jr.
The Embraer twin turboprop formerly carried the tail number N88jr before it was sold to the company that moved it to Africa.

I like Kyle Petty a lot, I think he's honest 8 times out of 10. He does do the 'our sport' and other stuff I'm not a fan of, but on balance I'd keep him. I like Dallenbah too, whether NASCAR or Indycar.

On combined score I think Bestwick/Jarrett/Petree are the best. The latter two will call BS if it's too out of line

Pretty much the ones I favor as well. One thing I think is missing from the telecasts in general is, without going to the level of WWF/WWE (insert joke here) a stronger voice for the play-by-play. Many of the calls of the finishes and other happenings are rather less than inspiring. I remember Ken Squier at CBS years ago would at least have some drama, make it sound like what the viewer was watching was a big deal.

Wonder if Reid's departure has any connection to the recent TV changes and ESPN's rumor about wanting to get out of NASCAR early in general.

Of that list, I'm cheering for Ruben Garcia Jr. and George "Jay" Beasley.

Garcia Jr. might win the NASCAR Toyota Series championship as a 17 year old rookie.

Yep it has to be. Afterall, we hear DW sodomize the English language enough in the booth, and he just gets rewarded more air time.    30 years. Hope he finds another gig at least.

Here's some Marty fails-

I neglected to mention during this discussion about Reid getting fired that while he did have a lot of incredible screw ups, the line that always sticks with me is from Las Vegas 2011:

"People ask me why I always sign off with 'Until we meet again', and I say it's because 'Goodbye' is so final. Goodbye, Dan Wheldon".

I was thinking to myself at work today, who should start the Charlotte thread?

Maybe someone who lives in North Carolina? I think there's only one of us.

Or it could be someone who doesn't live in North Carolina, and refuses to eat their nuts?

Of course, young Larson is making his Cup debut this weekend in a Target Chevy, so it's kind of an 'unofficial' changing of the guard.

How about we get our first officially "official" thread of the year?

Or perhaps someone who's a similar age to young Larson, who also has Target backing.

Maybe it should be someone who has been around long enough to remember the rookie debuts of our other great NASCAR heroes, and can tell us all to calm the hell down.

Or one of them there fohrinners, who have been crafty enough to escape OP duties thus far.

Could be just a guy with say, 50,000 odd posts too I suppose.

Or a Danica fan.

How about the fella who was galavanting around nyc last week and let Kevin Harvick take the pole and win while his guard was down? He's got some 'splaining to do...

Maybe it will be the dude who did a splendid job of hexing the crayola out of Kyle Busch last weekend. I'd like to shake his hand.

OMG a girl could even start the thread!!

If one of these categories made you say "I think he's talking about me there...", nominate yourself and get crackin' on dat OP!

No really.

I'm not doing it.

I don't have Target backing anymore. I've re-signed a sponsor deal for the rest of the 2013 season with Shitty Temp Agency Inc.

I nominate anyone who hasn't done it before to break their NASCAR cherry.

Seriously though, I don't see BK Racing keeping him on, especially with the Domestic Violence Awareness link.

Who will fill in if he does get the boot? Pretty good time of year to test out a rookie or two.

Diabetes awareness are continuing their plans of motorsport domination.

Ryan Reed to drive full season for Roush: Roush Fenway Racing announced its partnership with Ryan Reed and the American Diabetes Association Drive to Stop Diabetes campaign, presented by Lilly Diabetes. Reed will drive the #16 RFR Ford full-time in the 2014 NASCAR Nationwide Series season, competing for a championship and rookie-of-the-year honors. Reed, a NASCAR driver making his dreams come true while living with type 1 diabetes, collaborated with the American Diabetes Association for the Drive to Stop Diabetes SM campaign in 2013, driving for RFR in a limited schedule. It also was announced today that Lilly Diabetes has joined the campaign. Lilly, a leader in diabetes care since 1923, will be part of three NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2013, Charlotte, Phoenix and Homestead and the entire 2014 season. The American Diabetes Association Drive to Stop Diabetes campaign now presented by Lilly Diabetes is a movement working to end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on the lives of millions of individuals and families across our nation. Using Ryans story as the voice, the Drive to Stop Diabetes campaign will utilize awareness and educational efforts at NASCAR Nationwide races and several off track health and wellness initiatives throughout 2014.(Roush Fenway)(10-11-2013)

WRONG!

Hispania was one of two provinces in the peninsula. Portugal is mostly modern Lusitania http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lusitania Even when the country was ruled by a spanish king for 40 years it was officially considered a dual monarchy with separate titles and offices (tho nowdays the period is simply skiped over in history classes, so it never happened)

Portuguese language is not a offspring of spanish, it's basically a paralel branch from latin http://en.wikipedia....uguese_language

Sadly, american imigration services continue to turn a blink eye to this fact so anyone remotley speaking latin (save for italian) is stamped as hispanic, which is wrong on all accounts, but hey, we do the same to the brits, they are all english even if they come from Wales.

Ahem, sorry for the off-topic.

Some rules changes in 2014?

NASCAR officials are apparently considering a number of possibly significant rules tweaks for 2014:
-- Elimination of the minimum height rule. That would be to end the rather meaningless post-race controversies and penalties for cars being 'too low' after a race. Some worry, though, that such a rule would force teams to discard thousands of dollars of expensive springs. However the current rules have led teams to spend huge sums on very trick springs.
-- Adding roof 'wickers,' similar to used in years past, designed to break up air flow over the roof and presumably make it easier for a trailing car to pass.(Mike Mulhern.net)(10-11-2013)

The wickers have been done before, and I recall they made for some crazy ass plate races.
