Speaking of Kvapil, he and Cassill have been confirmed to return to BK Racing in 2013.

I think we need a gentleman's agreement that there can't be a Jimmie Johnson posting tomorrow. Too obvious. Unless it's something awesome/awful like his Spongebob Squarepants car.

In fact the unofficial rule should be modern drivers must be in a "wtf?" livery.

Magoo is that Bob guy related to The Dillon Brothers by chance?

Allmendinger still working on 2013 plans: AJ Allmendinger tried to close the book on 2012 by going to bed early on New Years Eve and not celebrating the end of the year. But it was hard for him when just a few days later he drove through the tunnel at Daytona International Speedway. He couldn't help but remember last July when he drove through the DIS tunnel wondering if he would ever race again as NASCAR had just suspended him for a failed drug test the previous weekend at Kentucky Speedway. His return to Daytona Friday didn't have that type of drama as he set the fast time in testing for the Rolex 24 Hours At Daytona, which is scheduled for Jan. 26-27 on the track's road course. Allmendinger is driving for Michael Shank Racing, whose team he anchored in winning the sportscar event a year ago in perhaps Allmendinger's biggest win in his racing career. Allmendinger was fired by Penske Racing for the failed drug test. He drove two races for #51-Phoenix Racing following his reinstatement and while mentioned as a possible driver for select races for the team in 2013 Allmendinger said he has nothing set beyond the 24-hour race. "As of right now, this is the only race I've got planned," the 31-year-old Allmendinger said. "We know how this world works. It's crazy. & I definitely want to be back in the Cup Series because I have got a lot of unfinished business. It's not the way I want to go out like that. I'm open to all options sportscar racing, IndyCar racing, Cup, Nationwide, trucks, whatever."(Sporting News)(1-6-2013)

Hey Ross, say Allmendinger finds a competitive NW ride. Would his earnings still be comparable to IndyCar?

Given the Indycar wage base and that AJ has no bargaining power?

Mike Bliss had a gross of 700k last year for finishing 8th in points. Then again AJ had 3mil in prize money for getting sacked half way through the year in Cup. Before whatever normal salary he had.

It'd be touch and go between Nationwide and an Indycar ride that paid. If such a thing existed with two months to St Pete.

Hmm, funny you should say. Why do you ask? I have no idea but Bob Wellborn and Mike Dillon (the boys' dad) are from the same part of the world up around the High Point/Davidson County area. So could be. Sometimes it seems like half the people in OG NASCAR are related in some way. (OG = Original Goober.)

Wellborn was often described as the king of the NASCAR convertible division. Won the championship multiple times. Often drove for Julian Petty, Lee's brother/Richard's uncle. It really is a small world down there in some ways.

Don't do that gm, Ross now instantly hates Bob Welborn :)

Magoo, by OG, don't you mean Original Gober (as in Sosebee? ;) )...at least for the Georgia crowd.

Tho' I admit I'm still scratching my head over the Kvapil-Sosebee comparison

Both are simply mid-packers with unusual names, that's all. Not trying to get too fancy here.

By Original Goober I mean one of the indigenous peoples of the geographic region, aka hillbillies, hicks, rednecks, bubbas, gerts, junebugs, dickweeds, Snopes, biscuits, cow tippers, shitkickers, skeeters, snake handlers, tongue talkers, ridge runners, goat ropers, canoe-chasing banjo players, and good old boys, et al. Bless their hearts. Salt of the earth.

Hmm. . .more info on the Travis Pastrana deal.

It says that Pastrana will be sponsored by various Roush and Pastrana sponsors. It says that Red Bull wants him to focus on NASCAR and that they him don't want running motocross. He'll run RallyCross when it doesn't conflict with a NW weekend.

“Red Bull is fully taking (my NASCAR career) under wing and beyond that, they said, ‘Look, if you’re going to do this, no freestyle (motorcycles), no this, no that.’

The return of Red Bull colors in NASCAR? I guess we won't see NOS at Roush-Fenway anymore if so.

Always liked the c1981 Buick Regal. Looking at that photo, I am recalling how those cars still had a good bit of OE sheet metal on them.

Regan Smith, AJ Allmendinger to spilt 51 car.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Regan Smith and AJ Allmendinger will split the 2013 Sprint Cup schedule in the No. 51 at Phoenix Racing, general manager Steve Barkdoll said on Tuesday.

The Spartanburg, S.C.-based organization also hopes to put 2004 Cup champion Kurt Busch in a select number of Nationwide Series races, beginning with next month's opener at Daytona International Speedway.

Busch ran 29 Cup races and four Nationwide races for Phoenix Racing last season, winning the July Nationwide race at Daytona before replacing Smith in the No. 78 Cup car at Furniture Row Racing late in the year.

Smith, who has a fulltime ride in the Nationwide Series with JR Motorsports, will open the Cup season for Phoenix in the Daytona 500. He also will compete in the July Daytona race, both Talladega races and possibly four to six more events.

Allmendinger, who drove four races for Phoenix Racing last season after being released from Penske Racing following a suspension for violating NASCAR's substance abuse policy, will run the rest of the schedule beginning with the second race at Phoenix.

Barkdoll said the plan is to drive the full season between the drivers, with the understanding Allmendinger would become the fulltime driver after Daytona if a sponsor stepped forward for the entire season.

"Regan really wants to focus on his deal at JR Motorsports," Barkdoll said.

Phoenix Racing already has Cup sponsorship lined up for Daytona and Las Vegas, which Barkdoll said is more activity than the organization had all of last season with Busch as the primary driver.

Chuckled a bit at the small jab in the last sentence.

Thank you.

At this time I wish to emphasize that any physical or mental peculiarities exhibited by these simple and honest folk are generally through no fault of their own, but simply a result of an excessively restrictive breeding pool and its sometimes unfortunate course. Genetically, it's a roll of the dice. These people deserve our compassion, not scorn.

Yep that is a #45.

Eddie Pagan, Darlington 1958. Holy hell.

And only a broken nose and cuts and bruises from that. He might have been leading when the tire blew and that happened. After he'd started on the pole.

Eddie Pagan, one of them good ol' boys from the South...Southern California, Lynwood to be precise. Raced jalopies around L.A., moved up to NASCAR's Western series. Got a factory backed Ford drive with the West Coast based Ford team, which got him trips to the major Southern races as well. Also had a pole at Martinsville. After he retired, started up Hutcherson-Pagan Racing with another retired driver, Dick Hutcherson, and at one point they built most of the chassis.

The Southern 500 continued after Pagan tore through the guard rail, and magically, Eddie Gray shot through the opening without serious injury. While I don't remember Pagan, "Steady" Eddie Gray returned to So Cal short tracks and was the first driver I remember noticing his driving style (while I was still in elementary school).
