You're seriously arguing over semantics?? Ok so I'll rephrase the wording. He was fortunate to go straight into a top team. As Clatter has already highlighted Lewis was due to do a year as test driver and lucked in when JPM walked away. So a fortunate circumstance to go into McLaren and yes he was deserving and talented (which I never argued being a Lewis fan!).. That was quite simply the point I was trying to make

Fortunate circumstance to go into Mclaren ? He was there already,,, preparing to be an F1 driver. Do you not understand that he was working with Mclaren as a boy ? It would not have changed the fact Lewis was always gonna have his first race in a Mclaren and he secured the seat at the 2006 gp2 race in turkey says RD. Amazing recovery drive. His position was well earned, if you get a promotion at your job or a raise do you look at it as a gift f circumstance ?

What are you talking about? Lewis went straight in with a top car...that hardly ever happens...it was a gift, the right word for it.

Jenson Button 3rd in British F3 straight to Williams F1 drive, this when they still were a top team

True but the idea of it being a gift really ought to be balanced with the fact he was Fernando's team mate, which easily could have led to the destruction of his career, had he failed to perform.

Yes looked what happened to young drivers like Jos Verstappen and Jyrki Jarvilehto given the chance to be Schumacher's teammate in their rookie seasons?

LOL guess you didn't watch F1 back then
In 2000 there were only 2 top teams
Williams scored 3 3rd places that year that's all
Not comparable to Lewis in 2007

Try again

look how button did against Schumacher - comapare that to Hamilton and Alonso.

Also the prior year Macca came 3rd in the championship along way back from Ferrari and Renault.

Its not exact but its not that far apart as far as comparisons go

I don't need to look, the comparison is silly
Williams was not a top team in 1999 or 2000
ergo Button did not go to a top team

end of comparison with Lewis who was gifted a top drive in 2007
and did very, very well until he choked

Yeah massive choke beating the current double WDC.

How about Button being gifted the Brawn drive and WDC that came with it... the only reason he drives a McLaren is through a lucky championship.

Would he have been on McLarens radar otherwise?

"Gifted"? I didn't see many drivers lining up to try for the Brawn seat over winter when the future of the team was in severe doubt.

Would he have been on McLarens radar otherwise?

Possibly not. But I believe Hamilton himself suggested Button so maybe they weren't swayed by pure results alone.

They only wanted the #1 on the car.

Yeah gifted the seat by Ross... they same way Lewis was gifted a seat by Ron.

They signed up a driver they didn't think was good enough for 3 years to get the number 1 on their car?! Seriously?

Yeah gifted the seat by Ross... they same way Lewis was gifted a seat by Ron.

Hamilton took a 50% pay cut to stay with McLaren?
Button was trusted with the race seat at Brawn after showing extreme promise in testing despite being so young?
Again, seriously?

Anyway, sorry. This is not only getting bizarre but also off-topic.

Also the mind puzzles how a driver gets "gifted" a drive in a team he's driven for the last 6 years while taking a substantial pay cut???

My explanation for the ignorance on display here is that for some F1 only started in 2007

Your self showing ignorance. I forgot about Jensons other offers in 2009... the gift was a dominant car, you could ask any driver on the grid if a guaranteed WDC for half their wage and they would all take it.

If you only want to scatter lame excuses regarding Lewis by all means keep it contained to this thread but don't spout lame and false comparisons to Jenson Button

OK

People are confusing top teams, with top cars, and gifted with earned.

Hamilton's luck at starting with a competitive car is not that unusual (his place in the team was earned)- Coulthard with Williams, Villeneuve with Williams, Montoya with Williams. Even discounting the car competitiveness we've had Schumacher jump to Benetton after one race, Magnussen debuting with McLaren, Kovalainen debuting with a Renault team who were the reigning double WCC champions, Rosberg starting off at Williams. Not all drivers have to crawl out a mythical pit with their bare hands, or whatever is the accepted path to gain some forum street cred. Neither do many go straight in against the current double WDC in the same car.

But I get the impression some of you are just tyrying to out-troll each other. Good job.

I'm sure you are forgetting the other offers as that wouldn't fit your picture would it.

How was JB being offered a guaranteed WDC? No team can make that promise. Your whole premise is based on hindsight.

So Webber and Button finished 3rd and 4th and Alonso 5th in the WDC, right?

And btw. something is wrong with these calculations for Qualifying (even if we consider the penalties).

It is good to see this kind of civilised behaviour between teams. I think it is the norm, as I can't recall the last driver to be on any kind of gardening leave. In the past you would see new drivers testing for their new teams almost immediately after the season. Schumacher tested a 1995 Ferrari, for example. Those were always interesting test sessions.

I could well be wrong but I didn't think Button was allowed by Brawn to visit McLaren until the 1st of January 2010. As I say though I could well be wrong...

Well, Button's move was a surprise to Brawn and happened after the end of the season. There might have been hard feelings generally, and there may have been a view that he was more exposed to the 2010 plans since he was expected to stay (whereas McLaren have known for a few months that Lewis was leaving). I seem to remember something about Jenson being entitled to his WDC car as part of his contract, which takes on a completely different significance if the driver is leaving to join a rival team. I can't remember how that was resolved.

It makes more sense that they would have cars arranged chronologically (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 ...) rather than by driver. Nice photo, though. I strongly suspect he will be back at McLaren before his career is over.

"I can remember when he turned up wearing earrings for the first time. Then all the mechanics sprouted earrings as well - big hoopy ones - so that was quite entertaining."

Aww, sweet video. Good that he and the team have handled the eventual leaving with dignity. You know,it's nuts, but deep down, I still can't actually quite believe he's not still going to be there next season. Still, onwards!

I posted in the past that the signs indicated that there was possibly some friction between the two, and was shot down. This video while nowhere near conclusive, does absolutely nothing to disprove my theory, and in fact it could be argued goes some way towards doing the absolute opposite.
