Well I won't blame Lotus. Their car is insanely reliable. And what hurts the most, is that retarded limitation of engines. And it is hitting back Raikkonen that he completed all laps this season

Things have gone from bad to worse. Not enough setup time, and a potential engine penalty.

So we're probably looking at a net qualy position of 15th-20th.

Or a start from the pitlane, that might be advantageous.

yup
the problem is, Kimi stopped on the outer side of the track, paddock is in the inside. does it mean they will only get the car after FP3? :well:

Like a flashback to the days of exploding Mercedes engines at McLaren...

First thing that crossed my mind

Lets see what the Lotus boys can do, This could yet be another great race from Kimi if they can get it sorted.

That was a spectacular kaboom! Quite reminiscent of the McLaren-"Mercedes" days! :p

I think it's a 10 place grid penalty. But, if ever you are going to have a 10 place penalty, tomorrow is the time to have it.

Maybe if it rains tomorrow he should start from the pitlane and get a wet weather set-up?

Yep, he's a pretty good run so far, its a huge shame, but thankfully at least this hasn't happened all through the season.

Maybe Kimi should start tomorrow from the pitlane and go for a wet setup, if its raining like in the forcast.

They can fit a new engine, but it gives a 10 place drop, and thats if they can get it back to the pits, ffs, what a time for it to happen.

They don't have to fit a new(9th) engine. They can put in one already used with no penalty.

With possible rain and/or safety cars tomorrow, it is not as bad for Kimi as it looks.

Lotus confirm that Raikkonen had engine failure - it was his race engine but he can have a spare for the race

Can't they use a previous engine that they did only 2 race and not receive a penalty?

Yes. The strange thing though is this engine blew up was the freshest (lowest mileage) and that blew up, hopefully the more mileage engines will hold up.

Should RBR and Vettel be worried about this?

Renault engine failure.

Come to think of it, I don't think he will have a grid penalty.

They can yeah, but it'll then be a case of how long will that one last, difficult choice to make i suppose, my gut instinct would be to fit a new one, assuming they have one, and take the penalty.

Glad its not my choice actually.

He will have to start on his Q3 tyres also if he starts outside the top ten, right?

Are you listening to Lobato? Because the guy has gone nuts (in happiness) thinking this could be bad news for Vettel.
Räikkönen has driven every single lap this year, which means his engines have more mileage compared with other drivers and, therefore, should be more prone to "kaboom"

nah dont fit new engine. Lotus already have problem with overtaking... and starting from 15th-20th would mean he need to overtake like 10 midfield cars that has great top speed

according to vivaf1 Engine 1,2,3 and 4 have 2 races each just like engine 8 that just went kaboom.

Hoping that would be the last problem we see this weekend! Better to have it now than later in the quali/race.

isnt it about also where the engine was used? doesnt engine gets more on tracks where u often break and then accelerate? If these engines were used on tracks like Monaco, Singapour, Hungary it isnt also best replacment.

I hope this engine failure was related to the problems that they were having yesterday and that, having replaced those parts with ones that work correctly, the new engine will be safe from the same kind of failure.

additional question would be, if those engines have been used during practices (which would increase their mileage)

I think they said it was a coil yesterday, which is really more of an ancillary part, and the engine did seem okay yesterday once they'd sorted that out, who knows ?

This is a proper downer but thinking about it now and as others have said, better for it to happen now than in the race, its very very small consolation.

@Lotus_F1Team: Looks pretty certain that #Kimi's engine reached the end of its life in the limelight. Loss of oil pressure in the data gives the game away

So, it looks like the car reached the garage after all. Good job by Kimi leaving the car right next to the transport vehicle. I don't think there would be big problems with set up. The car was most likely already set up for the race, and they wouldn't have changed much after qualy. FP2 is the worst one to miss out. Kimi should be fine.

Kimi still sitting by the side of the track.

Good news they will change his engine and not get penalty....but bad news is Kimi's setups were bad yesterday and he lost todays practise so not good for quali. But race will be a washout, full rain expected.

It is a shame Lotus is looking more competitive then at the last race. For Kimi it is not just FP3 he also lost time in FP1. It is always difficult to recover so much lost time. Rain might not be that bad after all.

VivaF1 just lists when new engine are used. Just look at Mercedes - it doesn't mean that they are having same engine for last six races.
