What a great story, thanks for the link.
Sounds like quite an engineer and a pretty good rider.
That's exactly the era I use to be daydreaming about in maths classes at school.
I was lucky enough to live and work in the very end of that era. a great gypsy lifestyle.
Then it went all business and commercial and (some say) down the toilet.
