This is Willie Harrison, winner of the BriSCA F1 world final in 1982, a night acknowledged as one of the greatest nights in the history of the sport. Harrison was the perennial 'nearly man', having competed in the sport since it's first year in this country (1954) and having seen it develop from almost a jalopy-anything-goes formula to the spaceframed big-block Chevy-powered monsters shown here, and yet, despite countless wins Willie had never captured the World Champion title.....until 1982, on a dry and dusty night around the legendary Hyde Road shale oval, home of the equally legendary Belle Vue Aces speedway team, Willie produced the perfect performance, leading from the front in a race that was fast (but, in all honesty, not action-packed due to the track's narrow 'sweet' line) and finally securing the only title he truly craved!
A gentler and more unassuming man outside of the cockpit you could not wish to meet, a true gentleman in the old style.....in 2011 he saw his son win the same title while racing with the same iconic number 2 but it wasn't quite the same, or quite as emotional....it was never going to be.

Sorry for breaking the rules but it seemed apt given the current atmosphere
