Six seasons completed now without Alonso winning the world championship.

I can't immediately think of another driver who added a title after such a gap, so history is not on his side.

What do you think?

Perhaps not next year but possibly in 2014 if Ferrari manage to out do Renault/Red Bull on engine performance.

there was 7 years between Lauda's 2nd and 3rd title, for example.

he has to be favourite for next year surely. RBR are gonna struggle to do four in a row, Mclaren have no drivers and Mercedes will need a year to regroup. It's vettel or Alonso next year so you'd think with such a reliable car Ferrari can take a few risks.

Hopefully not, but if he doesn't it will be someone else's fault. I'd like to see Ferrari get back to winning ways though.

Lauda's 1984 title came seven years after his last WDC. But that doesn't matter really. Alonso was very young when he won his first two titles and he is still going to be around for some time. He certainly is one of the best drivers on the grid and if the car is good and reliable he can win the title as well.

Also, since his last title, he has been within a few points of the champion three times out of six (2007, 2010 and 2012). In 2008 and 2009 the car was average and in 2011 RBR was unbeatable. So that proves it.

He will win another title at some point. I'm sure he will. Any titles after that? Perhaps not but I suppose he would be happy with three titles. (He did say he wanted to retire as a 3 times WDC).

I have no doubt of at least 1 more for him. Who knows though. If he keeps driving at this level he has a damn good chance! Stunning year.

As long as Grosjean type characters are on the grid, no one can be sure if he wins or losses.

If Ferrari builds a fastest and most reliable car, then I think there is a good chance for a one WDC, why wouldnt it be? Other than that, not a chance.

Depends on the 2014 shakeup really. I guess he's probably only got another 3 or 4 chances

The gap is meaningless. It has absolutely no relevance to if he will win again or not (as the lack of a win is not down to lack of his own talent) It isn't like he's been absolutely nowhere in the standings for 6 years either.

My favourite driver in DTM needed 7 years and lost the title for only a few points for 5 years in that. Then he won, and not only the drivers title but also the constructors and team title.

Never say never.

+1.
I hope he never wins again as long as he stays at Ferrari! I will never forget how they treated Kimi to hand Fernando "the better development driver" Alonso that seat.
Things got even worse with how they treated Felipe to make that spanish Brat look like Gold or God!

He is in one of the teams capable of making the best car. And if (when?) that happens, he is good enought to take advantage of it.

If he will or wont win another, depends mainly on Ferrari. Not Alonso.

Maybe. Who knows if he's going to get a good car from Ferrari? I don't want him too however.

I believe he will, took Schumacher 4 years at Ferrari to get his title with them.

If he has a better car next year and drives like he did this year then he will be a contender.

He is in one of the best teams and one of the best drivers. He will remain the sport for at least three years and has thus a good chance to do so. We will see.

It'll be a travesty if Fred doesn't get at least another championship to his name.

Alonso has won or been close to winning the championship with 3 different teams, drivers and the people that matter rank that very highly and its the reason Hamilton is moving away from a race winning car into a midfielder.

Painful stat: if Alonso scored 13 more points in three seasons he would have been a five-time world champion with three different constructors.

I think if you did the same for Kimi, you would find that Alonso would have lost two titles to him. So it goes both ways. As always, the 'what if' argument is always more complicated that it seems.

I hope he wins another title. About next year, I wonder whether he will have stiff competition from Massa - if so, things won't be as easy as this time around.

Painful, but to be realistic nobody has won 5 championship fights out of 5. Alonso has won 2 and has lost 3, it can be considered normal.
Even Schumacher, the most succesful driver, lost 3 championships in the last race and another one because of an injury.

When Schumacher came to Ferrari it had not won a championship for 17 years and the team was in a much worse shape than in 2010 when Alonso arrived.

Much worse shape? Remember the 2009 season. The previous seasons don't count, because the regulations changed a lot in 2009.

I don't think the original point is about the car being bad - which was anyway a one off as you say because of the rule changes. I think a 17 season poor run indicates a fundamentally poor race team/processes, rather than a one-off design issue with the race car.

Ok, fair enough. But the team was also in bad shape, I remember lots of strategic mistakes in 2008 and 2009. Although probably not as bad as when Schumacher joined as you say.

If the Ferrari car for next season can match Red Bull's pace more or less, I can see Alonso beating Vettel to the title then.

Fans who don't support said driver and would rather their driver won instead?
