I can't listen to the radio right now but, according to wrc.com, Ostberg was 7 seconds behind Ogier after SS2, lost 3 seconds in SS3 ending up in 6th position 40 seconds behind Ogier.
Did the timing go nuts or did he suffer some kind of penalty?

Another stage, another Finn in the snowbank. Nikara off.

... and back on again, but half an hour behind. Understeered into the snowback in a spot where there we no spectators and spent the half an hour digging the car back out on the road.

Gets even better for Citroen, Sordo off. E: He is moving but lost a lot of time.

Interesting split times on SS6: Ogier up on Latvala by 10 sec. at midway point, down by 13 sec. at last split, up by 7 seconds at the finish. The stages are so fast, that this is simply impossible in reality, so it seems the Spanish timekeeper has fixed the problem of missing split times by just guessing something.

Hey! we Spaniards are known world wide because our ability to improvise :p
No joke, we even once had to organize a Palestinian-Israeli peace conference, because they suddenly decided they could talk after years of disagreement, and we were the only country who could prepare that in a couple of days giving the external image of knowing what we were doing (which we obviously didn't) :drunk:

well expecting Spanish technology to work in cold Sweden was a bit risky anyway ;)

E: shouldn't have said that, stage/split times are not working for me ATM...

hehe! you're right, too cold :p

Now seriously, I can understand some problems might arise during their first event (Monte Carlo), which we could consider teething problems, but there are no more excuses. If you are going to take responsibility of something (timing in this case), you test everything till you're sure everything is all right, period.

Me neither, they stopped completely about 10 minutes ago.

Latvala is already at the finish of SS7, but the timing has only recorded him starting. Latvala had an intercom problem for 10kms on that stage, so had no pacenotes. Hänninen too finished the stage, but wrc.com is not updating.

EDIT: split times have made a comeback!

It was the second run through, I'd think he remembered most of it. Only lost 2 seconds to Loeb.

Definitely not possible.

Hand signals are the only possible means of communication in a (proper) proper car with no intercom.
Theres a reason they wear headsets on the road sections....

Serious kudos to VW; they've jumped straight in against one team that's ruled the roost for 10 years, and another that's got 40 years experience, and they appear to be as quick, or quicker on both tarmac and snow. Am I right in thinking it's an in-house effort, rather than farming it out to someone like prodrive?

Proper in-house factory team.

Having by far the 2nd and 3rd quickest drivers in the world doesn't do them any harm either though

Well, he could hear her. I can. It's a Subaru Impreza WRC S8 (onboard from 2003). So that's at least one instance proving you wrong. Unless the car is not proper enough?:)

Of course you can.
They have a working intercom.

Otherwise there'd be no sound.......

The Young Swedish Tidemand is out, what a shame for him. Split times are all over the place as usual, but clearly someone is editing them on the fly. Sordo's split times were all over the place a moment ago, now they look "normal". Doesn't really give a lot of confidence.

The VW looks mighty, and Ogier seems to be fast on snow aswell. Are we heading to the Ogier era? Loeb is fast as always, and while Latvala hasnt been able to match his team mate, atleast he has kept it on the road. Great drive by Östberg so far. Novikov is fast, just like in Monte, i hope he keeps out of trouble. Bad luck for Tidemand, was it mechanical problems? A bit disappointing performance by Hänninen, but maybe it's better to finish after the monte crash. Hirvonen  .

Especially as it is a ++ on their side and a -- on the other, as you not only gain but also deny the other. They did a very fine job on the car in any case.

Impressive showing and kudos to VW and Ogier - they definitely have approached the WRC properly. Citroen must now be wondering about Hirvonen - I know its early yet, but it's got to be a bit worrisome for Citroen to see that their two full time drivers are nowhere on the leader board.

Personally, a proper in house Factory team is the best way to go. And while having a shed load of money is no guarantee - it does help. A fully funded, fully resourced, everything bar the kitchen sink thrown at their WRC effort. It's not just on the stages they're impressive, their PR/ promotion is in another league as well.

The modern wrc/s2000 cars look epic at full droop, especially the Fiestas.
But, most people on here seem to think that these cars look crap.....

From Autosport.com:
Having run in a podium position for the whole event up until SS14, Latvala was downcast.

"It's been frustrating," he said. "I need to focus on my driving tomorrow."

To me, this era (other than the crazy Group B), was my favorite in terms of spectacle. While the current crop looks good, there's something about the size, they being a bit small for my tastes, that doesn't quite jell with me. The new Polo looks the business as does the Fiesta, but the DS3 is horrible IMO.
