Did he drive Tyrrell Cooper in 1961?

No, he raced as a private entry in 1961. He was accompanied around Europe by Eion Young who wrote of their experiences in the July & August 2011 editions of Motorsport.

In 1961 Hulme and Angus Hyslop often entered as the New Zealand Grand Prix Racing Team.

Maybe, David - I don't know. I came across the info looking through the 1961 FJ results on Stefan Örnerdal's site, eg:

http://www.formula2.net/FJ61_GB53.htm

http://www.formula2.net/FJ61_GB65.htm

http://www.formula2.net/FJ61_E18.htm

However, when they finished 1-2 in the Gran Premio di Messina Stefan has them entered under their own names:

There is a nice interview with Hulme which includes this period in the current edition of MotorSport magazine (January 2013).

Thank you so far !

1962 : What I think is that when Hulme at times was entered under Tyrrell he was the third driver. He may have bought or rented the car but Tyrrell had only one 2 car transporter. When he entered under his own name Tyrrell was not there.

Of course my quest is also because of transports. I have been told about a picture where Hulme had bought an old Zephyr and pulling the Cooper on an open trailer.

If anyone can confirm the above , or scan the mentioned articles for me , I would appreciate that very much.

Thanks Tim

Just wondered if people were jumping to conclusions. Hulme was NZ Driver to Europe in 1960, and raced with George Lawton as the NZIGP Racing Team. Hyslop was 1961 Driver to Europe, so it would surprise me if he and Hulme both used the term that year

Bjorn - in 1962 Hulme raced his own car until, I think May. He was then No.2 Tyrrell driver at Roskilde on 27 May, and had three other drives with the team - as No.3 at Rheims, No.2 at Rouen and No.3 again at Albi. He also had a couple of works Brabham drives that year

Ken concluded that Denny was just too fat, lazy and slow-witted ever to amount to much as a driver.

He'd misread his man - totally. Ken didn't often do that. But he had in Denny's case. Typically, he later admitted as much...

Bjorn, we have 3 shots on the oldracephotos.com site from this period - just type Denny Hulme into the Advanced Search (bottom of the category list in Online Store) will bring them up.
Sorry, haven't time to post them right now. Cheers, Lindsay

I often wonder what promotes the raising of questions on this forum, then Motorport lands on my doorstep and I know. Reactivity not proactivity.

Actually Bjorn if you want to check out some more pics from that series you can type in 6993 - 7003 individually into the Search box. Some great early Cooper shots, the factory, John Cooper in cockpit at Goodwood, NZ'r David Young with his Zephyr and Cooper/trailer, Bruce McLaren working on the car at Goodwood etc, etc. Wonderful to see the cars when they were either as new or brand new by the looks of them.

In " It beat s working" Eoin Young gives the story of how he came to accompany Denny in the £300, 80,000 mile Zodiac to Roskilde. Gearbox trouble before Dover, broken rear spring on the other side. The back seat of the car was fully stripped out, with extra fuel tankage etc to maximise the free fuel offer at the circuits. BTW the car had a siren when Denny bought it.
Happy to scan the pages for you Bjorn, if you wish
I will check in some old period progs to see if there is any mention of the entrant by name, if I have relevant ones.

The Zodiac carried the plate 843 NPB and is shown from the rear, boot open, in '64 having been used to tow Denny's sole Brabham f2 car to Crystal Palace on 18.5.64 This is from a fine plate in Steve Wyatt's brilliant new photo book Motor Racing, the pursuit of victory, 1963 to 1972. There are several other transporter etc related shots in the book, which I recommend highly. Interesting to see Sir Gawaine Baillie's galaxie station wagon towing his Galxie on a trailer.
Veloce currently have a 40% discount, and it is available from various online sources at a similar price.
It contains some track shots, but essentially covers paddock and people shots, with many cars in body-off pose, just what enthusisats need, rather than cropped just-another-car-on-just-another-piece-of-track offerings.
Those of you familiar with Steve's work will know what I mean when I praise it. Well worth buying, IMHO.

BTW there is a shot of the McLaren Zodiac estate used as a support barge for the McLaren Olds at Brands, August '64

Edt; for those of a certain age, there is a super shot of a contemplative Jenks listening to Mauro Forgieri

...I had always thought Denny's surname was pronounced "Hullm"...but watching some you-tube videos of seventies F1 races, some commentators referred to him as " Hume " or even " Hoome "...what is the correct pronounciation?...hopefully not a silly question!...Cheers Ian

Nautical - Hullm. Commentator Anthony Marsh was a JP, quite pompous and stuffy, and he took the bourgeois British 'cholmondeley' route of assuming the Kiwis never could speak English properly, so 'Hewm' it would be, whatever anyone might tell him to the contrary...

His full name was Denis Clive Hulme, but he was known in motor racing circles as Denny Hulme.

...though not I think until much later, perhaps when he joined the McLaren Can-Am team

I remember the first time I saw him racing at Levin in 1959 and though how ignorant the commentator was in calling him Hullm. Everyone knew Hulme was pronounced as 'Hume'. How little I knew...

My 1965 season Autocourse calls him "Denny" on P51, so it definitely predates his association with McLaren. He signed his name Denis, and that was how his wife Greeta called him.

In Eoin Young's "Memories of The Bear" he comments on the pronunciation of "Hulme":

The name is pronounced 'Hullm', not 'Hyume'. Denny would say that his father told him 'never let them knock the "l" out of Hulme'.
