Another winter in the North and another Dakar is less than 3 weeks away :)

Whilst it's the same 3 countries as last year, the route is different. Beginning in Lima, Peru, then travelling over 8000kms to Santiago in Chile via Argentina (which will also host the rest day. (Day 8 this year!! ). 5th-20th January

Runners and riders here Whilst the usual suspects appear ready to give us a an exciting couple of weeks, I'll be cheering for Sam Sunderland and James West as well :)

Is there anyone that you will be watching out for?

Hopefully Bernhard ten Brinke can surpise us! And El Matador (Sainz) should do well!

Marc Coma will not be in the Dakar this year.

Hopefully the Husqvarna boys will put some preasure on Cyril and I hope Chaleco Lopez and Ullevalseter as well .

Will follow Laia Sanz with the Gas Gas bike….

The minis and Al-Attiya / Carlos Sainz buggy

Coma is recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained in Morocco. He says he's not 100% yet but plans to race as soon as he can.

Not a bad deal for a full ride with an RGM car. It doesn't look like anyone bought the ride.

In the US you can find the rally on NBCSports like on Versus in previous years. The half hour highlight show starts Sun Jan 6 at 2:30 AM EST. On DirecTV NBCSports is now on channel 220 in the block with ESPN and NFL Network.

What do you guys think about al-attiyah/sainz buggies? I mean it was built in 4 months or something, Carlos wasn't happy after recent tests. And Minis/hummer/even hilux took much much longer time to develop. True, regulations give them some advantages, but somehow I can't imagine these buggies will be any kind of threat. Even provided that they don't fall apart after 5 days.

The Buggies have obvioulsy wheel size and suspension travel on their side which gives them the edge at certain days. Personally I dislike the regulations which force the 4x4 to run with such small wheels and short suspension travels, it just seems against the spirit of the Dakar which pits technology against the wild. Banning too expensive stuff is fine but in this case it is clearly only all about giving 4x2 a chance. And who in his right mind would not go for a 4x4 for certain tracks...

Cetero censeo Robby Gordon is a cheating poor loser.

Well Coma is away, but the good part is that this year there will be no cheats from the organizers! The frenchies will not need to gift Despres the Dakar title like previous years!

Over the years certainly and I some of the old anger returns when I start to think about certain decisions in certain years... I would love to have a more international team handling the Dakar, such a national bias has done no sport much good.

In any case I still dislike Gordon, as a sportsman, not as a driver.

British Eurosport seems to only have very limited coverage ( far worse than previous years!) - Is the dakar being shown on any other UK available TV station?

They've got a 30 mins highlights programme everyday, with the occasional 'live' show as well, so no worse than previous years?

I thought it was nearly an hours programme in previous years - the cars, bikes and trucks...then interviews from the Bivouac (sp?)

It used to be on around 10pm and a repeat the following morning around 7am. From the TV listing I've seen it's on at 0030 and no repeat the following morning.

It's been 30 mins for a few years now. Highlights programme is on 22:00 most days and appears to be repeated between midnight and 00:30 the following day.

Dakar Android app. There's also one available for the iPhone, too.

Honestly though, it was pretty useless last year, constantly crashing and providing dated information, which have hopefully been ironed out for this year's event.

One of my colleagues has entered the bike competition.

It is his first Dakar and he is one of only two guys to ride a BMW - his goal is obviously to make it til the end :)

What's a Dakar without Marc Coma? I always loved the soap-opera around him and Despres. The rest is dull.

I like Robby but if I were driving a Hummer I don't know that I'd be calling the other guy's car ugly...

The Qatar Red Bull buggies were made by Damen Jeffries down the road a piece in Apple Valley, CA.

Now I know I've always said I don't give a hoot about who commentates on what but...
OH SHIIIIT IT'S CARLTON KIRBY...
The worlds WORST commentator.

Think I'll go for the Spanish language broadcast as linked earlier...And THANK YOU very much for that.

Anyway, funny thing that Ickx said that it's impossible to cheat in Dakar. I guess he didn't watch how organizers gave the bikes win to Despres last year...
