I can see what people were on about in relation to the coke-bottle, that will be interesting to keep an eye on.

Already rumblings on twitter that the panel on the nose might not hang around for long!

Car looks good and tidy, I think we are gonna have a decent pre-season.
No more messy last minute fix jobs like on last year's car, exhaust solution is nice and clean and much better integrated in to the hole package and this car has a very sharp and clean rear end.
I think it has lots of room to grow.

Nice job Ferrari :-)

like what? apart from ugly nose of course

2012 cars was a bit short and bulky compares to Red Bull. Now it looks small, light and long that should go faster???

The small wing that sits between the rear wing and the diffuser.

A couple of links for live timing for testing:

car looks nice on track.

I'd still prefer the fw pillar painted either in all black or red, but it's ok in that way too.

I've seen these but I won't put credence to them just yet.

Apparently it has to do with the weight of the vanity panel and it has been confirmed by the team that Ferrari have out a lot of effort into weight saving. Anyway, if weight is that much of an issue how did they get away with it in the past when there was no stepped noses.

remember last year there was rumblings that their pull-rod front suspension would disintegrate any minute. :D

You only had the crash structure, no added panel.

The Gazzetta has a couple of new videos online, in this case about the new rear suspension outline with the higher mounting point of the lower wishbone on the upright to copy the RB8 solution.

BTW in 2001 Ferrari did come up with small wing including the two of three elements, excluding the wishbone. This was later banned as it was too large and was not neutrally shaped.

Yeah but the crash structure would have been made of a stronger bonded carbon fibre and thus adding weight. It said that the vanity panel doesn't weigh more than a few hundred grams and who is to say that the added aero benefit doesn't outweigh the added weight.

Anyway, we will see which teams remove the vanity panel.

great looking car. probably my favorite. really dramatic rear end, not too fussy either, very clean. I think Ferrari might have a cracker on their hands. Certainly looks the part for me.

Somebody from Mclaren, when talking about MP4-28, said that the cover did provide them with an aero benefit that outweighed the extra weight, but only by a very small amount. I guess the difference is small enough that some teams might find it doesn't outweigh the extra weight. We'll see. Fingers crossed.

I wonder if this car have the neutral exhaust, like the F10 at the launch of the car, perhaps the coke bottle area would be even cleaner ?
In fact, with this current concept of exhaust, it's seems to me eyes that the exhaust block the airflow to back end of the car.

That's why Red Bull have a tunnel, and McLaren don't have a ramp at all.

Jerez de la Frontera, 5 February – And we’re off again. This morning saw the start of the first day of testing with Felipe Massa at the wheel of the Ferrari F138, as it made its official track debut. Running at the Andalusian circuit began shortly after 9, when the light went green at the end of pit lane and the engine was fired up in the Ferrari garage prior to Felipe completing the usual installation laps. After a brief pause caused by a couple of red flags – the first courtesy of Button in the McLaren and the second down to Rosberg’s Mercedes – the team got on with its work, centred mainly on data acquisition relating to the handling of the car. By the time of the lunch break, the Brazilian had completed 47 laps, his fastest set in 1:21.024. At this point, Romain Grosjean gets the prize for the fastest lap, in 1:19.796.

Since 2007-2008 years there was only 1 Ferrari that looked good in my opinion(F10), that car proved to be very fast, the fastest Ferrari from 2008 onward.
I don't know, I am now expert in aero ... but if something looks right more often than not its also behaves right.
I have a good feeling about this car, I don't know if we will be the fastest, but I am sure we will be competitive, very clean and fluid car, back end is just wonderful and I think we will have lots of room for in season development.

I was watching one of the NatGeo/Discovery stuff and they happened to discuss about the laminar wing design of the Mustang versus the ME109 wing profile. So i just wondered while comparing the side pod to the coke region of the RBR and the Ferrari, is the Ferrari's far too forward while the RBR's being a bit back helps in the smoother flow of air? Welcome to flame me for this amateurish talk.

Gary Anderson: "The Ferrari looked pretty good and vice-free. The car seemed well planted and Felipe Massa looked committed, which is always a good sign"

While I would take anything he says with a grain of salt, at least we don't have last year's doom and gloom impressions.

Plus the car looks VERY beautiful!

But they werent in top5 on day one of the first test! Scrap the car, focus on 2014.

Be interesting to hear Fry's comments. GA seems to like this wee motor as well. Also, I feel I must add, I'm far from a ferrari guy but that car is beautiful!

Felipe Massa says this year's Ferrari is 'on a completely different planet' compared to the underwhelming F2012.
At least this is something and considering the other positive news, it can be seen as a good 1st day.

It really is the best looking car they've made since prob the F2008. Most of their recent cars have had a very "cobbled together" look about them, as if the designers were conflicted about what to do. Bodes well for this year.

What I personally want to hear is what Fry says about wind tunnel/track correlation. That was our achilles heel in the last 2.5 years.

Felipe Massa says Ferrari is on a 'different planet' compared to the difficult situation it found itself in during pre-season Formula 1 testing last year, after getting his first impressions of the new F138 at Jerez on Tuesday.

The Brazilian ended the day sixth on the timesheets, but was not too worried about the lap times, because most importantly Ferrari had banished the prospect of a repeat of 2012's opening test nightmare.

"I think if you compare to last year it is a completely different planet," said Massa, when asked by AUTOSPORT about how his first day's running with the new car compared to 12 months ago.

"Last year I remember we were struggling a lot to drive the car. It was tricky to keep the car on the track, so this year the base on the car is completely different to last year.

"The car is much more balanced. I felt a good direction on the rear of the car as well, with traction. This is a track that is very difficult on the rear, degradation is very high. I would say that the difference to last year is huge."Massa said early issues with the F138 have cropped up - like the need to improve cooling in the cockpit - but there were no alarm bells ringing about significant performance problems.

"I don't think it is a difficult thing to fix," he said. "I am not disappointed definitely.

"The 1m18.8s [lap time of Jenson Button] is an incredible time definitely, but the 1m19.7s [of second fastest Mark Webber] I don't think is.

"If you look at the first day, looking at how we ran, how we drove and the direction we had for the first day, I am not really disappointed.

"There is a lot to do, a lot to work on, a lot to develop on the car for the first race. That is clear. But I am not disappointed."
