Don't write them off: Mercedes AMG technical analysis
Mark Gillian's opinion on the W04

Bit more balanced view I'd reckon.

W03 was really ugly compared to W04. Well at least new car looks quite good (even nose is a bit less fugly)

Hopefully 2013 will be like 2011 Part Duex.

2011? It was not the year of the samurai. :p

Car looks good and fast. I think Mercedes will be strong at the beginning of the season like last season but the important question is whether they will be able to match top teams' development speed.

Oh dear Lewis, what have you done. The Mclaren looks like a bullet, the new Merc just looks a mess. As a fan of Lewis it's rather depressing. I hope I'm wrong I really do but I would not be surprised if Rosberg and Lewis go out in Q1.

Keep the faith Olly.

I really hope this car is fast. The bonus from last year is that they knew the car is lacking in a few key areas, namely the rear tires. The car showed that it had speed, but just faded during the race.

The team was able to focus on what was not working, instead of having to scrap the whole dang car and start from scratch.

I look forward to see what parts get added as the tests go on. I am sure things like the front wing and rear wing will get more updates as we go along.

It also appears that the team has not chased any gimmicks like the DDRS, and worked on the bread and butter. That can be fine, as long as they have not missed some trick that other teams have found.

I have no reason to be anything but optimistic about this year. I am not willing to simply write off this year and wait for the next, because I really have doubts about how much of a change the new engines will make. It's just a new engine, not a new formula. Renault had no problems going from the V10 to the V8 in the 2005 - 2006 season.

Me too, I expect the car to be quite different come Melbourne. The five element front wing sounds interesting and the nose could change significantly.

Whoops, I must have overlooked that release. The rest still seems to hold true though. Remember the 2011 Lotus, those front exhausts were a lot of time wasted in the grand scheme of things.

Hindsight 20/20 though. There are a lot of teams at the back of the grid without any gimmicky features.

They worked early, but when everyone got their EBD, they were the only team they couldnt go that way :)

From that angle it looks like the Mercedes barely has an undercut.

Very good point. They were locked into a design that could not be changed. We also saw a lot of fires from that wacky exhaust.

I may have a selective memory, but I think of all of the funny things that teams have tried, that they all thought was brilliant, only to fail. Then again, that's what it's all about.

Hamilton will be in top 5 in Melbourne. It'll be very hard to take this merc on a straight.

The W03 was a a good car early in the season because of their double ddrs and the randomness pirelli added in the first seven races. It was never a solid car, that was only bad because it ate rear tires. that was part of problem for sure. if you take the qualifying speed without gimmicks and the right temperature window into account it was behind the front runners inclusive Lotus and that can't be a measure stick for "speed". I think they needed to sort out a lot of things to be at the front in 2013 than just their tire problems.

I have a good feeling. Nice to see Hamilton and Rosberg standing next to the new car, and feeling the suspense coming - tomorrow it all starts with proper testing!

I'm curious to their all new 5-plane FW. This is the part where Mercedes can improve the most as last year they were very limited with what they could do with their FW (layout, shapes and profiles) without disrupting the use the their double DRS.

Lol @ Hamilton the aerodynamicist

Also Hamilton already got rid of some of the buttons on his steering wheel as there were too many; I've got double the amount of buttons I had on the previous one

Why does it always have to come down to a Hamilton arguement.. I am keen to see what is going on at the rear end of the car, if they have developed a like double diffuser that would be big.

We will have to compare with what the other teams have done to the rear tomorrow! No more hiding from the photographers, tomorrow we get to go down to the nitty gritty details.. Pity I have a slammed calendar at work tomorrow

He is in it to win, so he will be happier if he wins, right? Even if it is for the "long haul" he would be happier if he starts to win right away. I would!

Yep should be a good day tomorrow. We want to see good long runs, and reliability. Now if the car happens to pace a heck of a lot faster than the crowd, that's great too.

Sorry if I missed it, is it Nico first up for Tuesday?

Cool, I wish they would televise, or at least stream it on Youtube. I imagine that it would not make for thrilling tv, but it would help break up the waiting period till the season starts.

Sorry for asking old questions but how did the last few Mercs look in testing? I am afraid I was focusing more on McLaren at the time.

Were they fast? Unreliable?

Last year Merc wasn't even ready for the first test.

Oh yeah, I think I remember that. Trying to get a better idea of the tires. Like McLaren did in 2011.

So this is already an improvement from last year.

Yeah but Mercedes photo was taken with some zoom, while Mclaren was not and has the fish eye effect, it's not a accurate comparison.

I believe that's just perspective, otherwise one could argue that the McLaren's side-pods are wider overall than the rear wheels. The width of the side-pod and side-pod vertical aerofoils usually pretty much reflect the width of the floor and the teams run the maximum allowable floor width.

True. I still think they are narrower. Originally you mentioned the undercut. I think the shape itself is different altogether. Th e slight U-pod profile, which slopes quite far to the rear, is combined with a peculiar side profile aimed at directing the flow towards the floor and then an even more peculiar rear. The missing undercut seems to be because the top of the pods are narrower.

Quite so, But NR has never ever said a negative thing in the past three years. Especially not pre-season. So I will believe what I see. My face still hurts from last season's fall.
