The area I feel is messy is this, if we compare:

McLaren seem to grab the air better with the shaped bodywork and lead it in. The whole thing is more clean, while Mercs feels messy.

Feels like the car is very much develop-able though, which is nice.

Agreed, but today was only a filming day, we will see what it is like tomorrow and in the other tests.

Mc has a refined concept they already have serious history with. I hardly think they will change much in that area. I expect the Merc to go through some serious changes in the next four weeks. So, in essence, that means close to nothing atm. They certainly have some serious testing to go through. First of all, let's see about teething problems. If reliability is ok, they should work like hell. Lets see why that rear-end looks like it does.

Keep in mind that these lateral cooling channels are larger on the Mercedes because this year they have chosen to reduce the size of he dorsal cooling channel (see small exit dorsal channel)
The McLaren still cools a lot via the dorsal channel so they need smaller lateral channels.

I took this into account when I made my (very basic) analysis. Even so most other teams have preferred to restrict bodywork in this area, whereas MGP seem to promote it.

Looks like a very safe design, nothing overly risky or different on there. I would imagine considering the year they had in 2012 that they want to get a solid baseline before they start to push. Front wing aside, looks quite pretty head on, no so sure about top down however, looks fat. One thing that does strike me as odd is that the exhaust exits are quite far back compared to the McLaren and Red Bull designs.

This is an excellent photo.....

The bodywork back by the exhaust exit looks about how McLaren did last year. Everything is in little panels so that they can swap stuff out in testing quickly.

I looking forward to seeing if they quickly add "gills" to read wing end plates like the other top teams. The DRS element also looks damn near vertical, hopefully then they play with that a little as well.

Isn't their wheelbase still much shorter, hence the different packaging?

Red Bull would tend to suggest that longer car is the way to go, it is interesting that Mercedes choose to persist with a short wheelbase car.

Not sure it is. Tech specs showed overall length was a bit longer, (20cm I think), for what it's worth.

I think they are going for a mixed exhaust solution, by that I mean they have a McLaren bulge, and a RBR tunnel.

There was a theory based on first pics that the car looked shorter. However, the car is longer. If the car is longer, I hardly think the shortened the wheelbase. So no, I think the wheelbase is the same as the W03 at the least.

After watching Lewis drive the same old chrome & red McLaren for the past 6 years, this new "image" of him is definitely going to be difficult to get use to!

I think it will be much easier to get used to chrome and green than for example fully red etc.

I hope so too, but doubt it as I think today is purely about reliability and ascertaining if systems are functioning. I'm guessing we'll only see it by thursday at the earliest.

BTW, I'm very much wondering what the expectations are of Mercedes this winter. I'm really not hoping for much and I fully expect too see them in the bottom half this winter. Not trying to be negative, and would love to be wrong, but it's just a feeling and I'm at peace with it (for now, haha).

I'm reading the comments of the drivers as the same. They know from the outset that it's not going to be great and they've accepted that.

They've done a great job with shrouding the drive shaft and the rear leg of the lower wishbone together to for an aerofoil-like shape.

Hi res of the rear of the car, nice to see the body work outlet better, considering it is raised and the floor as a dip the centre of the diffuser isn't staved of airflow. It looks like they are trying to do something with the outlet almost "blowing" the shrouded lower wishbone?

I wouldn't be surprised to see more gills appear on the car. It's happened before. Doesn't necessarily say much about the car's performance and i never would i post an animated GIF here that mocks this Merc running gag.

Obviously not a good start to this season to lose the first day with electronic issues. And having to modify the wiring loom? I don't know about that. Oh well, that's what testing is for.

Report was that after a practice start the car went from first to neutral and then into second. Not sure how much of a problem it was.

Anyway, I am more and more confident every time new pictures are produced and probed that this was grossly underestimated, rear suspension is top notch and im fairly sure this will be capable of scoring good points come Australia. Can't wait to see Lewis pumping in some laps and reading his comments too, I have a feeling they'll be somewhat more transparent than Rosbergs, and finally I can't wait to see this new front wing around which, supposedly, the whole aero concept of the car is based.

Nico and Schumi were good PR men and never critcised too much in public especially Nico (who always seemed to have a smile on his face) wheras Lewis is going to be a straight shoote. Nikki Lauda will favour the Lewis approach me thinks rather than 'everything is positive' Nico.
