Are you just making this up as you go along? Nobody ever considered RBR to be 'nowhere', yes they had lost performance but were considered by most people watching and reading to be the second fastest car behind Macca. I can't find the articles atm because I'm not that great at find older articles.

Oh sorry I didn't realise you were talking about qualy pace, in that case I agree that Merc looked reasonably strong (not front runner strong though) in qualy trim. I can't recall race pace ever looking strong though, or maybe I'm just forgetting.

Where did you get this piece of information because it's nonsense.


Because I pay attention to what people who know what they are talking about say.

1. They had issues with down force last year, because they where limited on what they could do with the FW, and a a side effect the RW to keep the car balanced. They had to use aerodynamic profiles that would stall how and when they wanted them to. (DDRS related)
2. They also had issues with the flow reattaching when the DDRS was deactivated, some estimated where up to 2 tenths. Thus every time the DDRS was deactivated the car was momentarily extremely unbalanced. It was rumored Merc tried to minimize this issue by braking earlier.

Good reliability, most laps, decent pace - as in not Caterham/Marussia slow, a further tightened/refined rear end = a good day :up:

And... they ended up strong. They were second to McLaren in AUS, MAL and fastest in CHN!

As they said, they will be running the AUS spec from Saturday. And the car was developed from last week to now, the rear looks better again. Sidepods too.No Bullxxxxing this year, I like that.

if LH's last stint was a continuation of his race sim but on fresher tires, it looks good...

matter of fact if you dig deeper in the seemingly meaningless times of his whole race sim today, the times are quite encouraging....and LH's demeanor kinda confirms that to me.

If this car turns out to be competitive and they maximize race weekends, they just might end up saving my sports fan year/season from disaster.

I think he is truly surprised at how the car handles, not that it will be a true front runner though (maybe I'm being too pessimistic?). I am a tad worried about the lack of soft tyre running though and that Herbert said he still believed the tyre issues were there, either they are concerned the tyres will not hold up or they don't want to reveal their true pace just yet. The former is more likely imo.

Personally, i think the later makes more logical sense from the team point of view. I would have thought if there were problem with the soft, there'll be more simulation test with them, which suggest the team is deliberately holding back their true pace.

I am getting cautiously optimistic about this team now. :)

I will take Nico's opinion over Herbert's.

Exactly. If the team felt the need to improve their tyre wear, why would they avoid sending their drivers out on the soft tyre? I think Merc are confident about their pure speed this year, and are just focusing on refining their aero concepts and improving race pace so we don't have a situation where they go backwards in almost every race.

Nice to see you fellas finally get a bit of confidence in the car... am feeling like digging up those threads over the winter when I told y'all to wait till testing before writing off the season as "word on the street" was that Merc have a good car this year. :smoking:

Yep that is very true, this hadn't even entered my head for some reason. Maybe I really am just not letting my hopes get ahead of me :p

Many said that Lewis joining Merc would be a death sentence but in that video above its clear that the car cant be much worse than what he drove at the start of 2009.

I read the same. I'm keeping an open mind however because it was very early in 2012 (China?) where they exclusively began to talk of getting on top of the tyres and we know what happen after that.

They made a decent car last season.... or at least it was decent until they got lost in the developement race. They may start the season well (nobody knows who is where, and won't until Melbourne) but the real test of progress over previous years will be whether or not they can improve over the season compared to the other teams.

I'm just hoping that we have solved the tyre issues and that we can start being a threat to the top teams in terms of clever strategy decisions. The car seems to have a good base with good correlation also, this will hopefully open doors in terms of development during the season.

Does anyone know if Lewis is still using a mod steering wheel? If I remember correctly it was Lewis that made the request for McLaren to cut out the bottom of their wheel under the hand, I wonder if he will eventually do the same with the W04. Thoughts?

Yep, seems they've been running rather heavy the whole time, which has been in evidence with fastest times being set at the beginning of double digit lap stints, not to mention on hard tyres.

Every car on the grid is based on it's 2009 concept. You remember Mercedes' right? THE BGP-001? Yeah. Nuff said.
